Ok...this album...SUCKS and thats putting it lightly. Long gone are the days of Hybrid Theory and the good mix of rap and rock. This was a waste of my money (which i ran out and bought the limited edition the day it came out). I mean...come on guys seriously who wants to listen to a bunch of whiney emo songs from yet another sellout band? I have lost all respect completely for this band and this album is to blame. Yes it does have evolution but its not a good one. I understand that they arent gonna put out another hybrid theory but could you atleast keep the awesome guitars and the hard rock beat to it? And wheres Mike on this one? It seems he is disapearing from the band which i dont like. I have to confess that Hybrid Theory and Meteora are two albums I have worn out to the point that I can recite every lyric. Though I admit Linkin Park may not be the most original band to come around, I find that for well crafted, ear catching music, few modern bands do it better than LP. "Minutes To Midnight" came four years after "Meteora", and with it came several changes to the hit proven formula of "Hybrid Theory" and "Meteora", leaving a trail of mostly disappointed fans complaining about the "new" Linkin Park. However, looking beyond the deeper subject matter, and the lack of Mike Shinoda raps, "Minutes" is still very much a Linkin Park album.
As I mentioned, the main alteration of "Minutes" comes in the diluting of the rapping portion of the rap/rock infusion the band became known for, also known as "Nu Metal." Though I admit that at first I was somewhat let down at first by the lack of Nu Metal songs present on the album, it didn't take long for me to realize that Minutes is every bit as ear catching and re-playable as either of their first two albums. From the hand clapping, angst ridden, scream-along "Given Up", to the perfect melody driven pop rock of "Shadow of the Day", to the straight up Nu Metal of "Bleed It Out", nearly all of "Minutes" tracks deliver on some level. Linkin Park is simply experimenting here with different genres, instead of sticking solely to their Nu Metal roots. The very Metallica-ish "No more Sorrow" for example, is quite the head banger, while the somber "Valentine's Day" finds LP embracing their emo side. Another genre shift comes in a personal favorite of mine, "In Pieces" which finds lead singer Chester Bennington addressing his divorce to a building synth beat that makes for arguably their most simply enjoyable song to date. The other biggest change in the band comes in their deeper, political driven lyrics. Tracks like "Hands Held High" and "The Little Things Give You Away" make you fully aware of the band's stance on current political issues, to varying degrees of success. While I'm not quite convinced of the band's lyrical skills yet, points at least have to be given to them for branching out from their typical subject matter.
Overall "Minutes To Midnight" is everything I expected from Linkin Park. I'm glad they changed, since no band can survive without that, and I think that if most fans give the album a fair shot, they'll see that there's not much of a difference in the "new" LP compared to the old one. The album's not perfect as the changes don't always work (as evidenced most by the blah track "In Between" where Shinoda takes over the singing), but in the end, Minutes is a very suitable entry in the band's catalog. 5/5 stars

Mnutes to Midnight is almost a completely differnt band from before as this album had some new styles. I would highly suggest you listen to a good amount of the songs before buying the album as the is now cursing in some of the songs. I was stoked about this album and listened to it straight through twice in a row. I'm listening to it now, as a matter of fact.
It's interesting that a lot of reviewers on here make a statement that they are NOT "narrow-minded" music lovers, or they respect a band's right to experiment and go different directions, but then, in the very next sentence, they say this album is nothing like Linkin Park from previous albums, therefore, it's trash. First, I don't think that is necessarily true. There is plenty of the old LP here to keep the band grounded, but, personally, I enjoyed the slower tracks because they showed a more mature and developed sound and lyric style. Amazing job! I loved it and keep it coming LP.
