Free Music Review: A guilty pleasure, but not too much guilt

For me, admitting that I like Lionel Richie's music is a little embarrassing. How can a rock 'n' roller admit to liking something like "Say You, Say Me?" The answer is, to quote Mr. Richie, it's "Easy." The tunes compiled here are nearly all heartwarming and catchy, perfect for romance or just pleasant listening. This collection beats the previous "Back to Front" hits CD -- after all, it is titled "Definitive." The two extra new songs included are OK but not quite in the league of his very best work. The bonus disc is more of collector's item than anything amazing. Lionel's songs such as "Sail On" have given me a lot of listening enjoyment over the years, but I don't quite rank him as an "all-time great." My only comment regarding Richie's place in late 20th Century pop music is that just before hearing this collection I listened to Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" CD. Called "the greatest album ever" by Smokey Robinson, the Gaye disc puts Lionel to shame. You won't find ANY Richie song on The Definitive Collection that comes close to the magnificence of "Mercy Mercy Me."
