Free Music Notes for The Definitive CollectionFree Music Review: A Solid Richie Collection Hit: 5 StarsOne of the most successful artists of the 1970s' (with The Commodores) and 1980s' was without a doubt Lionel Richie. In a time when bland artists like Duran Duran and The Stray Cats ruled the scene, Lionel Richie's mature and brilliant brand of adult pop music appelaed to a vast audience, giving him a huge string of hit albums and singles plus an Oscar for "Say You, Say Me".
These statistics taken into consideration, "The Definitive Collection" is a solid compilation of Richie's best work and biggest hits with both The Commodores and solo, a random list of which would include "Three Times A Lady", "Sail On", "Endless Love' (with Diana Ross), "All Night Long (All Night)", "Say You, Say Me" and "Dancing On The Ceiling". All of these hits are here, as are lesser known hits "Stuck On You", "Penny Lover", "Ballerina Girl", "Do It To Me" (one of my al time favorite songs by anyone) and "Angel". The two new songs on this collection are very good as well, especially the Enrique Inglesias duet "To Love A Woman", which has a lovely country twang.
Naturally this is not a perfect collection. While I love this collection, I would have enjoyed it a little more if it was a two disc collection, which would give room for these songs:
From The Commodores:
"Machine Gun" (number 22 on Billboard Charts)
"I Feel Sanctified" (number 75)
"Slippery When Wet" (number 19)
"Sweet Love" (number 5)
"Brickhouse" (number 5) (am I the only one truly surprised this was absent from this collection since it's probably the best known Commodores song next to "Three Times A Lady"?)
"Too Hot To Trot" (number 24)
"Wonderland" (number 25)
"Old Fashioned Love" (number 20)
"Lady You Bring Me Up" (number 8)
"Oh No" (number 4)
From the solo years:
"My Love" (number 5)
"Love Will Conquer All" (number 9)
"Se La" (number 20)
"Don't Wanna Lose You" (number 39)
Until that comes along, this collection will do perfectly for most casual fans (hardcores will already have all the studio albums).
Free Music Review: A Fairly Good Compilation...but Hit: 3 StarsI'll be the first one to agree that this is a pretty good compilation album of a great band and a great singer. I do have one problem...when I purchase a 'best of' album, I'd like to have the songs FULL LENGTH, as they appeared on the original album. I bought this album thinking I'd get the complete version of 'Three Times A Lady', but what I got was this chopped up radio version. A classic shouldn't be so mistreated! I gave this album 3 stars because I believe they cut 2 full stars when they cut 'Lady'. Otherwise, it's a good album.
Free Music Review: HOW! Hit: 5 StarsLionel Richie is the best romantic writer and singer of the world! "Say You, Say Me", "Stuck On You" or "Hello" are the most impressive romantic songs...
Free Music Review: Cannot get enough of these songs!!!! Hit: 5 StarsI love these songs!!! They are great and holds a memory for me in some part in my life! Everything is included on here. Even some good hits from The Commodores! The only thing I don't get is why "Brick House" and "We Are The World" (he did write it) are not included! But, this is a must have for any fan of Lionel Richie. Every song just brings all sorts of memories back!! A MUST HAVE!!!!!
Free Music Review: Hello, 38 Songs U be Dancing on the Ceiling All Night Long! Hit: 5 StarsThis sensational double CD (if you're buying the 20 track single CD American version you're getting ripped off) has both Lionel Richie's solo artist masterpieces as well as the earlier Commodores hits as well. The CD cover booklet is quite well done as well giving a summary of Lionel Richie's career and info of what was happening at the time the songs were recorded and released.
I wasn't even born when the Commodores were a band so I can't comment on if the best of their songs are on here but ones such as Easy which are still constantly being played on the radio today are on here. Even though I wasn't very old when it came out I do remember seeing the film clip Dancing on the Ceiling and have always wanted to own that song. All Night Long one of the best festival dancing type songs ever written is another of my favourites along with the excellent love ballads such as Hello and Say You Say Me. No matter which are your favourites, there are 38 songs spanning four decades in this collection so your favourites are sure to be here for you to enjoy as well.
