Free Music Review: When did Steve Grimmett join Whitesnake?

I don't know what's more unlikely - the idea of a melodic rock band starting out once grunge was in full sway, or that it would be fronted by the guy famous (infamous?) for belting out metal classics like "See You in Hell" and "Rock You To Hell". Either way, that's what Steve Grimmett and Lionsheart did in 1993 with their self-titled debut, and by God they did it with style.
If you're familiar with Steve Grimmett from Grim Reaper or Onslaught, you know he has both power and versatility, both of which serve him well on this album. Lionsheart's sound is very similar to 1987-era Whitesnake and Blue Murder in that it's very polished, very melodic, and still fairly bluesy and hard-edged. There are also traces of Hurricane, Winger (circa Pull) and even Dio (see the very Mob Rules-sounding "Living in a Fantasy"). Grimmett sounds amazing here, showing more soul and emotion than I've ever heard from him previously. Between his vocals and the amazing melodies and first rate guitar work, Lionsheart is just a first class melodic rock album all around. Too bad no one (outside of Japan, at least) was buying this kind of music in 1993.
The Lionsheart debut is an album that should please just about any fan of melodic hard rock. Unfortunately, it's out of print, and pretty tough to track down. Hopefully some enterprising reissue label will do us a favor and remaster this album and the band's 1994 follow-up Pride in Tact some day.
