Free Music Review: Haunting, harrowing, heartfelt

Lisa Germano is, without a doubt, an exceptional musician. Her trembling voice, her dark poetry, her marvelous violin playing all add up to a strong impression she leaves on the listener. I got interested in Germano based on the level of acclaim she received and soon fell in love her modest, haunting third album, "Geek the Girl". While the record is essentially flawed--it contains quite a few missteps--it's a charming, sincere piece of music that will win your heart.
"My Secret Reason" opens the album with harrowing background sounds and excellent guitar playing set to Germano's direct lyricism. Instrumentally, the title track "Geek the Girl" is her masterpiece. Germano sings each line with complete sadness to that extent that even lines such as "I always loved rock 'n' roll" brim with utter sorrow. One of the more pleasant tracks on the record, "Just Geek", showcases her excellent violin playing. It is even more relevant in the wonderful, echo-driven "Sexy Little Girl Princess" and the exemplary track for Germano's style, "Phantom Love". Lyrically, Germano is a brave poetess who touches upon love, pain, fear, trauma and insanity.
Sometimes, "Geek the Girl" is musically too laid back and it's easy to lose interest. The record ends with three mediocre tracks which is disappointing, while "Trouble", "...a Psychopath" and "Cancer of Everything" are decent enough considering how strong the rest of the material found here is. Germano didn't enjoy widespread attention, which is the biggest tragedy concerning her musical career. She's one of the most famous musicians people don't notice. "Geek the Girl" is hardly a classic that some claim it to be, but it doesn't mean it's a weak record. If only Germano worked more on the instrumental constitution of the record to make it compelling for the listener. Other than that, it is a rewarding album that will haunt you in your dreams if you let it sink in properly.
