Free Music Notes for Whale Rider (Score)Free Music Review: Haunting! Hit: 5 Stars
First of all, be sure that this is a soundtrack album. Lisa Gerrard has worked with Dead Can Dance & has released solo albums, but Whale Rider is basically instrumental. Her vocals can be heard mostly on the background as a haunting chant, but nothing else.Still, I'm no fan of her, and this goes in my favour.
There are vocals though, Keisha Castle-Hughes, the leading actress of the film, appears in Paikea Legend, Pai Calls The Whales and the closer Go Forward. Rawiri Paratene, playing the grandfather in the film, appears at the end of Biking Home. And the last two songs, Waka In The Sky & Go Forward, have some Maori Chants.
I play this CD often, because it's really a great background music for reading, painting or relaxing. Smooth really defines the songs... On some reviews, fans have complained that this isn't really a Lisa Gerrard album. Well, I don't care about that. Synthetizers can be heard all over the tracks, and, indeed, various tracks sound the same. But the thing is, you should listen to the album as a whole, not the songs as individuals.
The songs that stand out are the opening Paikea Legend, the cheerful Biking Home, the haunting Maori chant Waka In The Sky, & the closer Go Forward.
Overall, this is a great New Age/World instrumental album full of relaxing music. Recommended.
Free Music Review: A beautiful film score Hit: 5 Stars
To be honest, I haven't seen the movie "Whale Rider" itself. I just havent' gotten around to seeing it. I have been wanting the soundtrack for some time now. I love Lisa Gerrard's work as a composer (as well as her work with her former group Dead Can Dance). I didn't have much expectations from the soundtrack. I certainly was well aware that there would be no vocals from Lisa herself. Still her abilities as a composer is pleasing to the senses I think. I really enjoyed her work on the "Gladiator" soundtrack which made me a fan of her post-Dead Can Dance career. I loved her work on "Whale Rider" soundtrack. I found the music to be very soothing and relaxing to listen to especially after a long day at the office. As I am listening to the soundtrack again, I feel like I am on a tropical island (namely New Zealand), riding a bike with the wind blowing through my hair. After listening to "Whale Rider", I certainly now know that I need to see the film to really enjoy the music. The music is just breathtaking. Normally I am wary of buying film scores but "Whale Rider" proved to be one of the best investments I have ever bought.
Free Music Review: Please think first! Hit: 5 Stars
Well, some people say where is Lisa's voice, but I don't care. I know that her voice is more than wonderful but listen this beauty, peace work and when I read that: " this is a stupid soundtrack" like somebody said... made me feel really bad because the people don't think in the possibilities on the music world, so if you want to listen a common and emotional normal score go to the store and buy the "Tita..." you know what soundtrack? No bad at all but normal the same pattern. Please do you know what is the whole point in that movie?,please think in the possibilities and If you don't like this music please listen first the score in someplace or read the reviews... make me that favor before write a review... we are talking about the sea, the whales "HELLO?", Don't you see the name " Whale Rider" What are you waiting for? A wagnerian type of music, classical music, The Host Of Seraphim! I know that is beautiful music but please THINK. Don't be fool think before!
Free Music Review: From the other-world with beauty, solemnity, and peace Hit: 5 Stars
Some have written "Soothing", yes, but also inspiring as it is not soothing in the sense of putting one to sleep, rather it evokes deep thought, introspection and mystery, bordering on sad, but with ethereal as it's backbone one will surely find what one's soul is more filled with; peace, or sadness.
'Bicycling', one of my favorites, had me retuning my Guitar to an open D and renewing my fading calluses.
If you find this album powerfully rich and lush with the sense of dreams, hope, and longing, interlaced with calm (as was pointed out in an earlier review) then to you I must also recommend the soundtrack to 'Children of a Lesser God'.
I found the atmosphere very similar to much of this wonderful work of art from Lisa.
See you there when this is all over, and we'll dance...
Free Music Review: A sumptuous film score Hit: 5 Stars
I'm not really a big fan of the film "Whale Rider". I have tried watching it but the film never really appealed to me. What I did like was the film score by Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance fame. The DCD influence is obvious through out the album. The music is a haunting mix of ambient, classical, and world music. The songs are mostly instrumental but there is a bit of vocalization from Lisa (or so I think). The music is very relaxing to listen to. I feel like I am swimming underwater with the whales. There is nothing about this film score that I did not like. Lisa Gerrard did not disappoint me with this lovely album. Her work is always enchanting to listen to. This is how film scores should sound like...subtle and emotional.
