Free Music Notes for Whale Rider (Score)Free Music Review: Breathtaking, beautiful Hit: 4 Stars
Two of my favorite artists are Dead Can Dance and Eric Serra (for his work on "The Big Blue", mainly). With the OST to Whalerider, Dead Can Dance former lead singer, Lisa Gerrard, put together the best of the two. The music that accompanies New Zealand's most succesful and touching movie ever (don't miss it: it's one of the best movies in a long time) carries an atmosphere that I can only compare with the experience of diving... but without the scuba gear. With her unmistakeable angelical voice, Gerrard, who also composed, arranged and performed the music in the album, perfectly fills the air behind the performance of young actress, Keisha Castle-Hughesa, playing a Maori girl that descends from a mythical lineage, and is determined to challenge some of her people's deepest rooted traditions.Though there are inevitable moments when certain themes remind of Gladiator (Gerrard also brilliantly sang alongside Hans Zimmer for the score of that movie), the work she put together for Whale Rider will be more welcome than the former among both, longtime Dead Can Dance fans (listen to track #2 in particular) and perhaps more, followers of her earlier two solo works from the nineties ("Mirror Pool" and "Duality"). If you are a lover of the sea and its sounds (including the siren-like sounds of whales), I cannot emphasize this enough: get yourself a copy of this beautiful production. You will enjoy it.
Free Music Review: Not bad at all, just don't remember much of it from movie Hit: 4 Stars
I kind of liked this one even though I don't remember much of it from the movie. I found the mostly synthesizer music to have a slow sometimes eerie sound to it but it was pleasant to listen to, didn't find myself skipping forward to another selection. I didn't get much out of the vocals, Keisha Castle-Hughes can be heard faintly on three selections but I'd have trouble making much out of it even if I spoke Maori. There are no lyrics or any sort of script included beyond song titles so you have to figure out for yourself just where & if you heard the selection in the movie.
Free Music Review: Wonderful stirring score Hit: 4 Stars
I was enthralled by the music in Whale Rider from the moment the movie started, so I bought the score as soon as I found out there was one. It's very subdued but it has a lovely lilt and perfect for listening to while I read or draw. I'm not really into Dead Can Dance or Lisa Girard's vocals so I'm glad that they take a back seat in this score. The downbeat tracks like Dissapointed and They Came To Die were appropriate to the movie but kind of get in the way of the experience when listening. Otherwise it was well worth the money. My only real complaint is that it isn't longer.
Free Music Review: Is beauty but... I miss her voice. Hit: 4 Stars
Is a good soundtrack, but the problem is when you are waiting for her beautiful voice. If you want to listen her voice, maybe you have to wait for more time. Is deep music, but I repeat her voice... I don't understand... where is her voice, she is a respectful diva.
Free Music Review: Not for Lisa Gerrard fans, but it's still good Hit: 4 Stars
Those looking for another Lisa Gerrard album won't find it here, but this soundtrack is still good. On a good sound system it's very clear and spacious. Great to turn the lights out at night and turn it up fairly loud.
