Free Music Review: A Dazzling Debut
Hit: 5 Stars
Overall I give the CD a 5 because a 5 means "I love it!" according to the Amazon ratings system, and I do! Is it a perfect album? No, but it's an incredibly promising debut that will hopefully see a US release. Little Boots is already getting a lot of comparisons to Lady Gaga. After all, both are dainty blond dance/pop artists who can sing live and play instruments. However, Little Boots is more playful and less overtly sexual. Her lyrics also focus on themes we can all relate to instead of an overemphasis on celebrity. Even though I love the album overall, some songs enchant me more so than others:
1. New In Town: an inadequate opener for an otherwise amazing CD - 3 stars
2. Earthquake: a catchy chorus and sparkling melodies set the tone for the rest of the album - 5 stars
3: Stuck on Repeat: initially underwhelming but grew on me after repeated listens - 5 stars
4: Click: love the verses and the lead-in to the chorus, but the chorus itself falls a little flat - 4 stars
5. Remedy: I first heard this song on Dollhouse and had to find out who the artist was, such a fun, infectious song - 5 stars
6. Meddle: throatier vocals and a more ominous feel - 4 stars
7. Ghost: suitably haunting melody and awesome lyrics - 5 stars
8. Mathematics: too silly, the only real dud here - 2 stars
9: Symmetry: a duet with the lead singer of Human League, similar sound, consequently sounds a little too dated - 3 stars
10. Tune Into My Heart: as cheesy as you'd expect from the title, but cute - 3 stars
11. Hearts Collide: the breathy vocals and spacey lyrics evoke Fever-era Kylie Minogue, but this is even better - 5 stars
12. No Brakes: a ballad so mesmerizing I'll even forgive the spoken word segment toward the end - I'd give it the entire Milky Way if I could
13. Hands (Hidden Track): Little Boots demonstrates her piano playing skills and vocal chops - 4 stars
And an honorable mention to Love Kills, a Freddy Mercury cover, which sadly is only available on the more costly extended addition of Hands. If Satine from Moulin Rouge was a disco queen instead of a courtesan, she would have sounded something like this. It's coy, kittenish and a lot of fun. Personally I'd replace Mathematics with Love Kills. Why it didn't make the final cut I have no idea.

Victoria Hesketh a.k.a Little Boots started her career writing her songs and posting covers on Youtube and Myspace pages. The videos soon became an online sensation generating interest from both fans and music executives in the UK.The interest resulted in a major record deal, soon after Little Boots was in the studio recording her debut album 'Hands' which was released in the UK on June 8th, 2009. The album debuted at #5 in the UK and is now certified gold. Prior to the album release Little Boots received a tremendous amount of media coverage from both UK and US publications including Rolling Stone (who labeled her as '...a new kind of megastar') NME, Fader (cover feature), Billboard, Esquire, The Guardian, Spin and more.
With the release of 'Hands' in the UK, the US simultaneously released the digital EP 'Illuminations', which included the underground club hit New In Town'. Shortly after, Little Boots released the 'New In Town' Remix EP and the dance club sensation 'Remedy Remix EP'. In addition to the extensive press coverage and a full live show broadcast on NBC's Last Call with Carson Daly, Little Boots has played sold out shows all across Europe as well as several sold out shows in the
US.
In preparation for the US release of 'Hands' on the newly re-launched Elektra Records, Little Boots will be headlining a US tour beginning on March 2nd to celebrate the release of the album, and will be playing at US festivals this spring/summer.
'Hands' is considered by many critics as an album with 'well-crafted' pop songs and 'diverse' production. The album
primarily features songs about love, relationships, and heartbreak, and takes influence from a variety of music styles such as disco, 1980's pop, and Eurodance. The first two singles, 'New in Town' and 'Remedy', reached the top fifteen and top ten in the UK, respectively.
With all of the momentum and accolades, 2010 is the year for Little Boots to gain national stardom in the US.
