Free Music Notes for Little Shop of Horrors (2003 Broadway Revival Cast)Free Music Review: A Spectacular Find! Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this CD on a whim. Previously, I had only heard three songs from the show (Grow For Me, Somewhere That's Green, and Suddenly Seymour) and I wasn't sure if I would like it or not. Usually I am sketchy about buying CDs I have never heard before, but based on the musicals popularity, I gave it a try.
And boy am I glad I did. I experienced instant gratification when I played this CD for the first time and immediately played through it a second time. I have always been a fan of Alan Menken's music and this is definately one of his best works. The music is very well written and the orchestrations are full and very satisfying. Micheal-Leon Wooley as Audrey II steals it for me.
As for all of you Original Off-Broadway Fans, I don't see any reason to bash this recording. True, I didnt grow up with the simplified version, nor have I even heard it, but being a huge fan of another very simple, Off-Broadway show (The Fantasticks) I can understand why you would be a "Little Shop" Purist and hate this "overblown" production. But in my mind, I see this as a show by itself, and not a re-due of the original. I was very pleased with this CD and I wonder why it took me so long to catch on.
Free Music Review: 'Tis very simply the greatest. Hit: 5 Stars
Speaking as one who also saw the show very shortly as it opened, I must say it is the best rendition of "Little Shop of Horrors" anywhere has ever seen. 'Tis one of my very favorite musicals, anyway, so I was all prepared to be a harsh critic about it. But then...I SAW IT!! And it was perfect, so to speak here. There is no doubt in my mind it will run for a long time. The new orchestrations by Danny Troob were amazing and necessary (the old ones for the small pit were really getting wearing). Unfortunately, when I saw the show, Kerry Butler was not present ('twas Jessica-Snow Wilson, who was good anyway). I was very impressed when I heard her performance on this CD. She is an amazing Audrey and from the time I heard her in "Bat Boy," I knew that Audrey was an appropriate role for her. Hunter Foster is outstanding as well, bringing a bit of hamminess (which is kosher in my opinion) to the role of nebbishy Seymour. I'd go on, but I'm tired. Perhaps I'll do another review later, in which I talk more. Sank you. Auf Wiederreviewen.
Free Music Review: Utterly Exuberant! Hit: 5 Stars
Little Shop of Horrors blends comedy with horror to ultimately produce an incredibly entertaining musical comedy. This recording is about as close as you can get to Broadway without actually going. The sound quality is superb; you can almost imagine yourself in the theatre. Kerry Butler and Hunter Foster both put in great performances. What I believe makes this recording so good though, is the outstanding support performances. There isn't a weak voice in the lot. Dequina Moore, Trisha Jeffrey, and Carla J. Hargrove are so much fun! Michael-Leon Wooley is an outstanding Audey II. As an added bonus, this cd contains 5 bonus tracks that are in the original film, but not the musical. Personally, I think the extra tracks are musically inferior to the rest of the cd, but extra tracks are always a plus! Talent and quality wise, this cast recording is miles ahead of the movie soundtrack. This is the definitive Little Shop recording.
Free Music Review: The Little Shop That Can! Hit: 5 Stars
After Listening to both the Broadway cast CD, and The Off-Broadway cast CD I have come to the conciliation that this is the better of the two. The changes to the Score are both Fresh and entertaining giving the show a new flavor to thrill advances. The cast is outstanding Hunter Foster is a delightful Dork as the meek and mild Seymour. Kerry Butler Shines with her amazing vocal talents as Adurey the ditzy subject of Seymour's seemingly unrequited love. Rob Bartlett and Douglas Sills are both stunning as Mushnik and Orin both bring wonderful talent to there roles. Then Last But not Least The Urchies Played by Dequina Moore, Trish Jeffrey, and Carla J. Hargrove have a show stopping quality rounding the cast out very nicely. The CD is definitely a must have for any Broadway collection. The show and the CD deserve way more praise then it seems to be getting! The show and CD are Both excellent and I highly recommend both!
Free Music Review: LITTLE SHOP HITS THE TOP! Hit: 5 Stars
The Little Shop of Horrors newest album (the recording to the new revival played at the Virginia Theatre) is the best it's ever been! Although I haven't seen the current revival yet (or the Off-Bway show, or the movie) I have a sense of the synopsis and feel like I'm in the show when I listen to the recording. Some of my favorite songs are "Suddenly Seymour," "Grow For Me," "Downtown," "Closed for Renevation", and "Little Shop of Horrors," which all sound GREAT sung by the new cast. I think this is the best cast picked yet...and no other cast would be better! Another thing I like about the new cast recording is the fold-out cover it comes in, with a book of photos and the synopsis/history tucked inside the inside cover. If you have a chance (and are a big fan of Little Shop and/or Broadway) buy this album...it's great!
