Free Music Review: I have seen the future of 18 piece band acoustic folk-rock-jazz-blues-gospel-country...
Hit: 5 Stars

And his name is Bruce Springsteen...with the Sessions Band. But pigeon-holing any of this would sell short the awesome power of "Live in Dublin". There may not be any electric guitars on stage but don't let that suggest that this is anything but 23 tracks of unbridled elecricity. For any doubters of the Seeger Sessions, this is irrefutable evidence of its worth.

Bruce and his rag-tag gang of banjo players, fiddlers, horn blowers and an army of power-house background vocalists provide the soundtrack to one irresistibly boisterous hootenanny. The Boss-Man has followed his muse all the way back to the roots of American music and the results are more than spectacular. Bruce and his mini-orchestra waltz into folk standards like "Eyes On the Prize" and "Jacob's Ladder" in the blink of the eye, and the performances transcend tribute and enter into the territory of semi-ownership. But anybody worried that Bruce got bored with his own catalogue should have their ears perked by radical re-arrangements of the intensely bluesy "Atlantic City", the devastatingly beautiful Irish lilt that "Further On (Up the Road)" becomes, the whiskey-soaked waltz of "If I Should Fall Behind", and a wonderfully unrecognizable salsa-funked up "Blinded By the Light"

The recently increased output of live material from the Springsteen camp means nothing but good things for people who love music. Live in Dublin is proof positive that the Boss is far from done yet, and is an excellent representation of one of the most exciting projects he's done.

Free Music Review: expanding the heart
Hit: 5 Stars

Live In Dublin There is a new book of poetry out by Mary Oliver of which two small stanzas from two different poems may help express my reaction to Springsteen,s Dublin Live. First; "Instructions for living a life/Pay attention./Be astonished/Tell about it." His whole career has been absorbed by observing the details of our ordinary lives like putting your mother in the back seat, going down that tunnel of love, waiting for that sunny day or seeing that smile in a young girls eye. His music is the rapture of sharing in this gift, the wonderfull and not so... But when he tells us or better reminds us of this truth in performance thats when its hard to catch your breath and be still the roaring heart. Dublin, the excursion through folk song Americana has got to be one of the best recordings he's ever done. He captures the spirit and blood trilling inspiration of many generations including his own and offers it up like a prayer to our human connection no matter where in the world. As mary oliver's poem Red BIRD begins ; Red bird came all winter/ firing up the landscape/ as nothing else could.

Free Music Review: Incredible album, so enjoyable its addictive
Hit: 5 Stars

I am a huge Springsteen fan, and either love or like almost all of his albums, but this one is definitely one of the best. I very much liked the Seeger Sessions, but this live performance of some of those songs as well as new interpretations of selected Springsteen songs is incredibly good. I received this album as a gift for my birthday; upon receiving the album, I immediately had to make a car trip which included over an hour and a half of bumper to bumper traffic, and because I was listening to the record, I literally did not notice the traffic jam. I play this album constantly (six months later) and find it incredibly enjoyable. The Seeger sessions songs are great, even better than on the original record, Springsteen's and the band's energy is high, the band is incredible too and I liked Springsteen's voice quality on the album as well. Especially great are the Springsteen songs he reinterprets here (Open all night is wonderful, other songs of his come out beautifully here as well). The variety of musical styles is amazing, including swing, rockabilly, jazz, gospel, rock, pretty much everything. I also bought the DVD of this album, and it is great as well. Highly recommended.

Free Music Review: Powerful, raucous, joyful, heartbreaking
Hit: 5 Stars

I'll echo the other reviewers and say that this is undoubtedly the best live CD I've ever heard, a testament to a combination of the music, lyrics, players, and timeliness of the message.

Springsteen is almost impossible to review, but I'll just say that, as much as I loved the Rising, Live in Barcelona, and Devils and Dust, the Seeger Sessions and this live album have taken him into a musical stratosphere that maybe only Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson can touch -- pure Americana.

Most of the other reviewers have adequately pointed out the highlights, but I'll say that the mournful dirge that the band transformed "When the Saints Come Marching In" to made tears stream down my face when I first heard this version, especially as it comes in the set after "How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live". Folk music is as relevant as it ever was.

If you like any strain of Americana roots music -- blues, folk, jazz, gospel, Western swing, roots country, mountain/Scots/Irish music -- this concert will blow you away and make you sing with the crowd.

Free Music Review: Seeger Sessions Songs Come Alive
Hit: 5 Stars

I saw Bruce Springsteen's Seeger Sessions concert last year at the PNC Bank Arts Center in NJ and it was an interesting, uplifting show. This live collection perfectly captures that feeling. While I prefer Mr. Springsteen's straight rock concerts, the show was raucous and big departure from his other solo work which are intimate acoustic settings. The cd from which the concerts emanated from was an excellent recreation of the turn of the century musically stylings, but the live show bring out the songs true heart and soul. Mr. Springsteen really cuts loose and you can hear and feel the fun he is having. Backing by a seventeen-piece band, the songs have a carnival, music hall sound. There are some songs from Mr. Springsteen's own catalog that get reworkings, most notably "Open All Night" which is a radical departure from the original Nebraska version. All in all, this two-disk set (there's a deluxe edition which includes a dvd of the show) is great way to experience this different Springsteen concert.
