Free Music Notes for Live & Swingin': The Ultimate Rat Pack Collection

Free Music Review: Outstanding DVD
Hit: 5 Stars

When I initially bought this, I was looking forward to listening to the CD for a long car ride I had ahead of me, and figured the DVD would be a nice little bonus that I would watch at some point.

As it turns out, the DVD is absolutely amazing and well worth the price alone. Not that the CD isn't great too, but it was watching the live performance that really moved me. Dean Martin is just a riot to watch, and it is impossible not to be in awe of the undeniable charisma of Sinatra when he performs. He just has a confidence you don't see too often. But the one that really stood out for me was Sammy Davis, Jr. I have been a Sinatra fan for as long as I can remember, but never gave much credit or attention to Davis. Boy, was that a mistake! The man is so versatile and musically gifted, and quite a comic performer in his own right (his impression of fellow Rat Packer Dean Martin is priceless). The highlight of the DVD for me was Sammy's vocals accompanied by only drums. Truly amazing!

For any true Rat Pack fan or anybody that is remotely interested in them, you will surely not be let down by this CD/DVD package. Do not hesitate to buy this immediately!

Free Music Review: This is fantastic
Hit: 5 Stars

This cd/dvd set is amazing. The other reviewer said something about the original Summit meetings, and how he saw clips. That does not mean that they were completely taped. This Dvd is a complete live performance of the stage act ever. What you get here is 4 fantastic talents. One is most versatile and talented performer ever. Sammy Davis Jr. is amazing at everything he does on here. Whether it is singing, doing impressions, showing the latest dance moves or doing great comedy. Dean Martin who is not only a fantastic singer but one of the funniest men to ever grace a stage. It makes think that he was the funny one in the Martin and Lewis team. Then you have the King of Late Night trading barbs with the kings of later night. Finally, you get Frank Sinatra powered by the Count Basie band singing with joy and abandonment. The Cd features songs from several performances, but the way they put it together makes sound like a normal Pack performance. My recommendation is BUY THIS CD/DVD SET. No matter what.

Free Music Review: CD/DVD a Great Bargin
Hit: 5 Stars

"Live and Swingin', The Ulitimate Rat Pack Collection," brings you back to another time in America. I am too young to have seen the Rat Pack live, but this CD/DVD combination provides the next best thing.
Disc one is an audio-only CD with performances of Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and Sammy Davis Jr. at a Chicago nightclub in 1962. Disc two, which was actually broadcasted about two years ago on cable's TV Land, shows a 1965 St. Louis performance by the same trio, with a very young Johnny Carson MCing. If you like the Rat Pack mythology and all that it stands for, then this collection is perfect. Thankfully, through all the clowning, there are some very good performances here, both on the CD and DVD, from Sinatra, Martin, and Sammy Davis, Jr. The comedy segments are also enjoyable, you can clearly see, at least at this point in their careers, that the three really enjoyed working with each other.
For about the price of a new CD, you get a CD and DVD. A great deal. Highly recommended.

Free Music Review: Platinum, Baby!
Hit: 5 Stars

Nobody was more thrilled than I was in the 1990's when the Rat Pack suddenly became very cool again, even after their styles had gone out of fashion and they were frequently parodied on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE.
Whether it was new interest in their swingin', carefree and very politically-incorrect antics or folks reading critically-acclaimed books like Nick Tosches' DINO or even a new generation discovering their ultra-lounge sound, it was a genuine kick to see people diggin' that Vegas scene.

The HBO film, THE RAT PACK, did a good job of structuring the backstory of the Guys, but you really have to see the DVD of this collection to really appreciate the raw talents of Frank, Dean and Sammy.
Ring-a-ding, baby, let's cook and swing!

Free Music Review: I Can't wait to get this
Hit: 5 Stars

How can you give 5 stars to something you don't even own yet? Well it sometimes annoys me when other reviewers do this but I've been listening to "The Rat Pack - Live at the Sands" in the car and it's absolutely wonderful with the only problem being that you can't see what's happening because as magical as the CD is you just know that a lot of the humour is even better visually. Now I'm going to get the best of both worlds.
The only down side is how annoyingly effortless these guys make it seem with Dean Martin apparently making no effort at all and being an incredible performer. Entertainers like this just don't exist anymore but we're lucky that they did exist at all. Fantastic.
