Free Music Review: Not truley a Rat Pack show. Hit: 4 Stars
I am sorry, but the DVD is billed as being supposedly the only "taped" Rat Pack performance. Fortunately, this is not true as I have seen clips of the original Rat Pack, which are the legendary "Summit" performances, in several documentaries about this truly legendary group. It is a release of these summit performances that would be the "Ultimate Rat Pack Collection." I beg that the Sinatra Estate will eventually allow them to be released in an uncut version. The reasons I gave this release only 4 stars is stated above, in addition to the fact that the DVD show has a very young Johnny Carson as MC. Carson is a funny man and a legend in comedy, but he is out of his league with these 3 (Frank,Dean,Sammy) who are truly entertainers to the core. There just isn't the chemistry between the big 3 and Johnny as there was during the performances with the original 5. However, despite my rant on the summit performances and what not, I gave this 4 stars. I am a Sinatra/Martin/Rat pack fan to the soul, and recommend this highly to any fan, because you truly cannot have enough Rat Pack in your life.
Free Music Review: not outstanding, but still good! Hit: 4 Stars
As stated by a previous reviewer, the cd portion of this set is great. It's back in '62, at maybe the peak of their live performances. One of funnier pat pack shows for sure. But I got this for the dvd mostly, and it's a little disappointing. This is a St. Louis show in '65, and it's not a wild and swingin affair - a little tame - but still a must see for fans. A young Johnny Carson is the MC, and not only is funny and cool, but at the end actually sings! Instead of the boys on stage together doing their thing, we get separate performances, until the very end. Dino is in great form. Sammy is OK, but for my tastes he oversings most songs. Frank is next, and it's classic Frank all the way...and with Count Basie band (yes that's Quincy Jones as the band leader), it's a short but swinging performance, with Dino shouting at him from offstage at times. Is followed by a rat pack gathering, which is short but great fun. Sammy mostly steals the show here. Photography is not so good at times, missing a few bits while focusing elsewhere. All in all, as a combo CD and DVD, this is great deal, and highly recommended.
