Free Music Review: Welcome return, if not leaving a little room for improvement
Hit: 4 Stars

After such a long time apart this record for one of my all time favorite bands was very welcome. And in parts it captures the brilliance I'd expect. 'Song without Sin' is probably the best example of the spirit of the band, a great song, and there are a number of other good tracks - 'flying' a standout, the 'Back in Black' cover goes OK in sort of a funny way but they do it musically quite well and a couple of the other tracks are good.

The rest of it is, I would not say poor, but better than they cover a lot of different styles which I found a little harder to get into (eg drum and base etc and some semi industrial stuff which just doesn't nail it for me), and to put it nicely some different produiction techniques.

Overall for the good tracks I am really glad I bought it: probably 5-6 tracks I can repeat over and over - and that's cool. It's not 'Stain' - their masterpeice, but after a long time it's just as valuable and it still shows they can make the same magical tracks they always could, I can't wait for more.

Free Music Review: See them live
Hit: 4 Stars

Yeah, this album is great, and this band is as amazing as they were in the early 90's- maybe better! I'll never forget seeing them for the first time at a small venue in Upstate NY in 1990. They nearly blew the roof off the place. And seeing them just a couple weeks ago in DC, they were just as intense and their sound has matured and progressed. This material will take some time for a lot of people to digest- they're very creative in the studio and I think a lot of their ideas will not sit so well with most people on the first few listens. There are a lot of good tunes here, but "Flying" and "Mash Up Choices" stand out the most for me. This is serious Rock 'outside the box' : ) But I would say this album ranks up there with their second LP, Time's Up. If you can catch their vibe, this is one of the most inspiring bands out there. I recommend seeing them live, buying this album, and giving it time to grow on you.

Free Music Review: LEGEND RETURNS!
Hit: 4 Stars

STAIN has been in my CD players rotation now for the last 10 years! No joke. A masterpiece of a recording that manages to alwayts sound fresh and current. Masterpiece for sure. When i heard LC were coming out with a new release I had my fingers crossed. Now I have to say it is no STAIN but very good non the less. Their sound is different. A great experiment by Vernon and the rest of the guys. I cant argue with it. They wanted a unique sound that set them apart from the sound we are hearing today and it works. (Ala Smashing Pumkins with their sound on Siamese Dream) Song wise, LC retain the dark edge from STAIN and pull a few musical inventions along the way. All in all a STAIN is a 10 where this release is an 8.5. Still not bad at all. I can only imagine this CD getting up to a 10 with time.

Free Music Review: Bought Collideøscope and Chair in the Doorway at the same time.
Hit: 4 Stars

As far as I'm concerned Stain was LC's last release until Collideøscope. I was not expecting them to be the LC of the 80's. Stain (and Wimbish) was sending them in another direction sonically and emotionally. This release is the next step in that evolution and it is well executed. With the exception of Back in Black and Mind Control, every track has something to remember it by, but track #7 Nightmare City is where LC hits its stride and for the next 9 tracks your earbuds are glued to your ipod.

I also picked up releases by 24/7 Spyz and Bad Brains. LC are still the Kings.

Free Music Review: Solid CD and promising return
Hit: 4 Stars

I've been a following of Living Colour, and their solo output (particularly Vernon Reid), and I must say that while this CD is not likely to gain Living Colour any new fans, it is a must for any old fans who are craving the sound that made them famous in the early nineties. While it lacks a decided "hit single" (except for perhaps the AC/DC cover...), it is their most solid CD since "Times Up". There is some excellent production here, some appropriate use of electronics and current studio techniques, great performances, and an abundance of political timeliness.
