Free Music Notes for The Chair in the DoorwayFree Music Review: Living Colour never lets down Hit: 5 Stars
I am 21 years old and have been an L.C fan since Collideoscope era. Needless to say I am a kind of a new fan. However over the last 6 years I have become a diehard fan, seen them a bunch of times whenever they come to ny/nj area, and have met them everytime and they are all very nice awesome dudes. I have listened to everyone of their albums front to back and can say something special about every single one of them. Whether it's Vivid for it's innovative structure, Time's Up for its versatility, Stain for it's aggression and flow, or Collideoscope for it's experimental darkness, Living Colour never lets down. Every album stands on its own, none of them ever sound the same and yet they still manage to be Living Colour.......this leads me to THE CHAIR IN THE DOORWAY.
This album was a long time coming but man it was worth the wait. Like always they don't disappoint. These songs are short but they flow together really well. Maybe better than any other L.C record. This album takes you on a typical Living Colour roller coaster but like always it manages to have different flips and turns every time. The album starts with a drum machine that kinda takes you back to IN YOUR NAME on Collideoscope. "Burned Bridges," is a song that I call hauntingly beautiful. Very catchy and powerful. "The Chair," is one of the heaviest L.C songs ever and maybe also the shortest clocking in at just over 2:00 long. "I'm going through the door," Corey Glover sings in the chorus. I guess the roller coaster ride has begun. "Deca-Dance" is another heavy song like The Chair but has a lot more of that Living Colour rock-groove that we know and love them for. Great Vernon Reid guitar solo. "Young Man," is absolutly brilliant. This song makes you wanna get up and move. One minute you want to dance, the next minute you want to march. You'll know what I mean when you hear it. "Method," is a dark mysterious song with all kinds of experimental noises from drum machines to much more. Probably one of the best songs on the album lyrically. "Behind The Sun," is somewhat of the single on the album. Honestly it took me a couple of listens but now I can't get it out of my head. Powerful and soulful yet also kinda sad as the said interpretation of this song is about wanting our troops to return home. We can always count on L.C to speak their mind in a brutally honest yet tasteful manner. "Bless Those," is a Doug Wimbish penned song that'll have you playing air bass all day long. Ear candy for a bassline with beautiful slide guitar by Vernon Reid. "Hard Times," is a heavy rocker thats heavy in emotion. "That's What you Taught Me," is a beautiful song that has a real GOOD modern rock feel to it. Very catchy from the verses to the choruses. You'll be singing this one for days. "Out Of Mind," is an extremely heavy song that takes you on a riff ride. The song starts with a snare hit from hell that melts your face off just in time for the main riff which then proceeds to make your bones deteriorate. Corey Glover's performance vocally on this song is absolutly brilliant. "Not Tomorrow," is a pretty, laidback almost jazzy kind of tune. Definetly a different side of L.C you've never heard before but great nonetheless. Then their is a track of silence that leads us to the bonus track, "Asshole." Don't forget about this one, it's one of the best on the album. One of the catchiest Living Colour song's ever with funny lyrics that would make any man laugh and yes I say men because once you hear the lyrics you'll know why I say "MAN."
In Conclusion this album is great and worth buying. As I stated earler, Vivid for its innovative structure, Time's Up for its versatility, Stain for it's aggression and flow, Collideoscope for its experimental darkness, and finally The Chair In The Doorway for its chemistry. It's a short record but so sweet. Each song is easy to get into. The fact that it's short is a good thing because they aren't over doing it. These songs all complement each other very well. Each member of the band sounds absolutly phenominal and prove they haven't lost an ounce of their touch even if they are a few years past their hay day. This album is unique and like every other L.C record it has a mind of it's own and is in no way generic to the others. ENJOY!
The Chair in the Doorway PosterLiving Colour will release their first new studio album in five years entitled The Chair In The Doorway on September 15 via Megaforce Records. Living Colour formed in NYC and still contains the original members Vernon Reid, Corey Glover, Will Calhoun and (since 1993) Doug Wimbish.
The legendary downtown NYC rock band, who exploded out of CBGB's in the late '80s and landed all over MTV, the cover of Rolling Stone and stadium stages around the world with their Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum debut album Vivid, are back and "fierce" as ever. The band gathered at Sono Studios outside of Prague in The Czech Republic during the fall of 2008 and spring of 2009 to write and record what would become The Chair In The Doorway. The results stretch from the modern soul anthem "Behind The Sun" to the politically-charged, heavy rock of "DecaDance to the sacred steel blues of "Bless Those. The artwork for The Chair In The Doorway was compiled from thousands of contest entries by fans from around the world.
"We feel like this is the best record we've made yet and we couldn't be more excited to be releasing it with the legendary Megaforce Records," says guitarist Vernon Reid. "Some of our favorite bands were or are Megaforce artists, Metallica, Bad Brains, Anthrax, Black Crowes, so it's an honor to be part of a label with a great legacy."
Living Colour will announce plans for a world tour shortly. With dates set to begin in September, it will include their first North American tour in four years along with performances in South America, Europe, Australia and Asia.
Having helped to pave the way for a number of contemporary African-American artists to follow in their wake, ranging from Rage Against The Machine to Lenny Kravitz to Ben Harper, with a multi-dimensional sound that drew equally from Jimi Hendrix, Bad Brains, Talking Heads and Ornette Coleman, the success of Living Colour broke down the color barriers in rock music. Guitarist and founding member Vernon Reid also founded the Black Rock Coalition to use his influence to further this cause.
Discovered by Mick Jagger who produced their first demo and later offered them an opening slot with The Rolling Stones, Living Colour would go on to create a repertoire that includes a multitude of classic songs, including "Cult Of Personality," "Elvis Is Dead," "Open Letter To A Landlord," "Glamour Boys" and "Love Rears Its Ugly Head." With The Chair In The Doorway, the fifth album of their storied career, Living Colour expands the scope of their timeless body of work and, in the process, proves vital as ever.
