Free Music Review: Dreams of a sweet singing super-goddess
Hit: 5 Stars

People who admire creative thinking are often unsure what they are looking for, or how long they will have to wait to get it. As the year 2003 started, I was wondering if I was going to get KANT ON SWEDENBORG, DREAMS OF A SPIRIT-SEER AND OTHER WRITINGS, Edited by Gregory R. Johnson, which finally arrived in March. Kant had a reputation for taking some creative steps in philosophy. He compared Newton's law of gravity, "the certain law governing the tendencies inherent in all particles of matter to draw closer to each other" to the kind of spiritual attraction which might, who knows? "represent the phenomenon of the moral impulses in thinking natures, who are reciprocally related to each other, likewise as the effect of a genuinely active force through which spiritual natures flow into one another such that the moral feeling would be this felt dependency and . . . a system of spiritual perfection in accordance with the laws governing its own cohesion?" (KANT ON SWEDENBORG, p. 21). The other thing I wanted in 2003 was a perfectly rocking Super-Goddess answer to that question, a CD called "Liz Phair" that went on sale 06/24/2003, and it's here.

I don't want to use quotation marks to talk about the song titles or lyrics on the Liz Phair album, which already has the perfect quote, "My mother is mine," in the song, Little Digger. That is such a resounding answer to thinking little thoughts about taking in all these grown-up complications that changes how it's always been, so in his head he keeps repeating the line, "My mother in mine."

Many of the songs have words that might have impressed Kant with their clarity. The CD starts with Extraordinary, about a performing Super-Goddess that, surprisingly, you may not believe in me but I believe in you. Red Light Fever is about waiting in traffic, which Kant never had to do in Berlin, because he never went there. Kant is an ideal thinker, always going nowhere, afraid of going somewhere, and somewhere's a place in your heart. Kant could have gone to Berlin, and be like anybody else, but too many people want too many things, and you only want to forget, you're stuck in your head.

Why Can't I? It's inevitable. High enough for you to make me wonder; high enough for you to pull me under. Something's growing out of this that we can't control.

It's Sweet how you believe. You're in love with me. You can over-think anything you want. But it really doesn't matter. 'Cause it's sweet to believe. You're in love with me.

All the lyrics are in capital letters, but the word ALL is in even bigger caps in the song Rock Me, as in: Let's mess with everybody's mind, I've gotta tell you. Baby, baby, baby, if it's alright. Want you to rock me all night. Baby. . . . ALL night. Yeah, Rock ... Me... All... Night. Your record collection don't exist. You don't even know who Liz Phair is. Pure potential. With no credentials.

Take a Look is wanting to know all the details of my disaster. Like an accident on the side of the road, and you're driving past slow. And would it liberate you. If you knew what I knew?

Firewalker is so religious that JOY is the word in larger capital letters in the chorus. I'm like a wild flame that catches on whatever's near. I look like I'm so unaware. Like I don't care. But I can grow. In spite of all you know. You might not recognize me tomorrow.

Favorite is faded pink now, but it used to be red. Oh Baby. Know what you're like? You're like my favorite underwear. It feels just right. Oh Baby. Know how you feel?

Love/Hate is like Kant starting his trip to Berlin. I grew up thinking. What's good for one, oppresses the other. It's a war with the whole wide world. Nothing's gonna change. It's race, sex, and government. Any way you look at it, you're part of it. The wrong inside you can't get it right. You might as well get on the train. It's hard to get over the feeling. You're losing your mind. You offer the usher your ticket. The lights go down. You get it fed on a plate. It's a war with the whole wide world. Nothing's gonna change.

H. W. C. Don't think about what the others say.

In My Bionic Eyes, as I got older, I had to step out of the lines and make up my own mind. I can't feel anymore, but I can fake it forever.

It's been so long since you've been a friend of mine
And I wasted your time. Didn't I?
And that's the reason we fight all the time.
It's been so long since you've been a friend to me.
It seems like I dreamed and now I'm waking up to daylight . . .

Some of the songs are only about three minutes long, but a few have tunes like songs that Liz Phair released on her previous albums. I was pleased with how musical they all sounded, and I would love to hear the demo track on the Internet EP as soon as that server is unbusy enough to download to my computer's slow phone connection. There are some encouraging lines in the last song on the CD, Good Love Never Dies:

Tell me, what can I say to keep you in my life?
All the words slip away when I look in your eyes.
Because I can never relax.
I've got to keep it exciting,
Make it attractive.
Keep it alive. Keep you coming back.

Liz Phair Poster

Eponymous albums are usually either debuts or the work of musicians trying to introduce themselves to a new audience. Count Liz Phair among the latter. It?s Phair's fourth studio album, but her first since 1998, and it's a long way from the arty, low-fi sound that marked her true full-length debut, 1993's Exile in Guyville. Phair has developed into a considerably more confident singer, while her songs and the production they receive here are as slick and radio-friendly as anything by, say, Avril Lavigne. That?s no surprise, since Lavigne's production team, the Matrix, produced many of the tracks here. (The rest are helmed by LA rock stalwarts Michael Penn and Pete Yorn producer R. Walt Vincent.) Sex is still Phair's primary subject, whether it?s comparing a lover to a comfortable pair of old underwear ("Favorite"), asking a much younger man to "Rock Me" all night long, or praising the beauty benefits of oral sex ("H.W.C."). The only time Phair lets the cheery facade crack a bit is on "Little Digger," on which Phair tries to explain to her young son why the man she's currently dating is not the boy's father. Who could've guessed that even the freest, best-protected sex could have such far-reaching, unintended consequences? --Keith Moerer
