Free Music Review: Music as Sad and Haunting as the Novel

Unlike Kubrick, Adrian Lyne was willing to put his neck on the line to try and capture the mood of the great Nabokov novel. I'm always amused by the comparators of apples and oranges who contrast a film to its novel and find the film inferior. I've read the annotated Lolita at least 6 times, and it's easy to see that both films are simplified, streamlined, abridged versions of the story. It has to be that way for a film to have a chance at breaking even financially. Whole segments of the novel are missing from both films; Humbert's emotional maturation (perhaps the main theme of the novel) can't be shown. Sad, but unavoidable. If you want the whole story, read the novel.
Morricone's original music for Lyne's film is very much background music. It stays in back of the story and can't be appreciated fully on its own unless you listen to this soundtrack. It is beautiful, sad, plaintive, and haunting, just like Lyne's film. The only upfront music is the collection of period songs and they are terrific. Many I had never heard, but they are obvious to the ear as correct for the era of the film. Unfortunately, the music doesn't follow the chronology of the movie, and some great period music from the film doesn't make it into the CD. I wish they had included "My Carmen" which is a key part of the novel and has a credit in the film, but I can't find, and have never heard.
Like the soundtrack for Kubrick's film, this is a must-have for Lolita fans!
