Free Music Notes for Long Road Out of EdenFree Music Review: Last Good Album In Town Hit: 5 Stars
This is the first new album I've bought in ... well longer than I can remember. As a 27 year fan of the Eagles this album has been a long wait and I must say I'm very happy they finally did it. There have been a few tracks that have appeared since their "reunion" a few years ago but this is the first full on album since The Long Run. Some will argue that it may have been better to shorten it down to one album instead of two. However if they had done that there would of been those of us that would be complaining about missing out on the tracks they left off. My own personally assessment after listening to the albums non stop for about a week is that they pretty much nailed it. Sure there are a couple of tracks that maybe don't light my fire as much as others but overall it's a great pair of discs.
Disc 1
No More Walks In The Woods - Pretty much continues where Seven Bridges Road left off. An almost a capella (there is a little acoustic guitar) track that really showcases the great harmonies the Eagles are famous for. I do feel it would of been better to start the set with a more uptempo song but that's not much of a criticism. The album cover lists the song as 4 minutes but it's actually only 2 minutes.
How Long - Probably the best track on the album. The fact that it was written by J.D Souther in 1972 is probably why it sounds like it could of come off any of their first three albums. A little reminiscent of Take It Easy. I really wish they had done more tracks like this. Maybe if the feedback on this track gets back to them the next album will have a lot more of this kind of stuff.
Busy Being Fabulous - Kind of reminds me of the title track from The Long Run in it's feel if not the lyrics.
What Do I Do With My Heart - Slow paced track from Glenn Frey. While not exactly the most thrilling track it does have some nice harmonies and some good guitar work.
Guilty Of the Crime - First of two Joe Walsh lead vocal tracks. I seem to enjoy the Joe Walsh tracks more than most of the songs on this set. Always been a big fan of Joe and these two tracks really showcase his sense of humor and of course the legendary guitar. Nice piano piece in the middle too.
I Don't Want To Hear Any More - Never thought I'd see a Paul Carrack song on an Eagles album. Pleasant enough song and handled very nicely by Timothy B.
Waiting In The Weeds - A 7 minute opus whose opening few bars almost sound like a Bruce Springsteen song. One of the strongest tracks. (1:36 outro)
No More Cloudy Days - One of the better Glenn Frey tracks. One that sounds more like an Eagles track rather than a solo track with the band playing on it. Sounds a little like Nilsson's Everybodys Talkin'
Fast Company - Every time this track comes on I think of Life In The Fast Lane. Both have "Fast" in the title and both feature Don Henley's falsetto. Similar theme in the lyrics too. Very catchy tune and one the tunes that has grown on me the most.
Do Something - Another vocal from Timothy B. Very country sounding song. Slow paced but enjoyable all the same.
You Are Not Alone - One of the strongest Glenn Frey tracks on the album. A nice closer for disc one. Apart from Glenn's instrumental on disc two this is the shortest track running in at 2:24.
Disc 2
Long Road Out of Eden - I see his as the third in a trilogy. The Last Resort, King Of Hollywood and now Long Road Out Of Eden. The haunting Arabic sounding intro fits the song nicely. Probably go down as one of Don Henley's strongest tracks ever. Great guitar work throughout the song.
I Dreamed There Was No War - Nice short and sweet instrumental track from Glenn Frey.
Somebody - One of the few really strong uptempo numbers on the set. Unfortunately unlike How Long this sounds more like a Glenn Frey solo track. Nice pumping bass.
Frail Grasp On The Big Picture - Followed suitably by a track that sounds like a Don Henley solo track. Dirty Laundry II perhaps.
Last Good Time In Town - Joe Walsh provides us with a Steely Dan sounding ditty. I wonder if Joe wrote this as a poke in the eye to The Dan given the history of the two bands. Great track in my opinion. Joe's vocals still sound great.
I Love To Watch A Woman Dance - Probably the weakest track on the album. Written by Larry John McNally (who wrote For My Wedding on Don Henley's Inside Job album). Kind of folksy slow ballad. Nice but a little boring.
Business As Usual - Nice intro. A pretty good song from Don but sounds more like a solo track than classic Eagles. Still nothing to complain about here.
Center Of The Universe - Another Don Henley track. One of the top 5 tracks on the album. Nice acoustic guitar and close harmonies. Don's best vocal on the album.
It's Your World Now - Glenn Frey cajoled a mariachi band to back him on this one it sounds like. I can see why some would not like this, it doesn't sound like the Eagles at all but I like it.
overall a great 2 album set. Well worth the wait. An album I will be playing a lot over the next few months. And at $11.99 for a 2 CD set a bargain for so many tracks. How Long will we have to wait for the next one? not long I hope.
Free Music Review: Long Road Hit: 5 Stars
Four and half stars, rounded up.
If you are an Eagles fan, you should buy this six-years-in-the-making album because who knows if the band members can stand one another long enough (or will come through another band member's hotel room with a chainsaw) to make another album together since this is the first studio album since 1979, "Long Run." The story was that the Eagles so hated one another on stage at times due to drug-fueled ego clashes that they vowed to never make another album until "Hell Freezes Over" -hence, the name of their live album. That said, this could be a collectors item.
I found listening to the album quite fun to hear each of the four lead singer Eagles band members singing songs. What a treat to hear Frey, Henley, Walsh, or Schmit each sing different songs on one album and to be able hear some harmonizing!
I think it's a great buy to get 20 songs for $11.88. Maybe you'd rather pay .99 for song? Not me.
There have been complaints that this album is boring since the Eagles haven't done anything new with with their southern California country rock pop sound. Who would like some rap or some other genre mixed in? The trend today is for bands to change the style of their subsequent albums to do something new. For every band that does that there is plenty of gnashing of teeth and pulling of hair. Many wonder where the old sound they so liked went. Others are delighted with the bravery to add a new twist to the band's sound. I think there's a couple new twists in here. I can only say most people who are Eagle's fans would be seriously disappointed to get an album without the classic Eagles band sound, which is what you'll get with this album. If you are a past Eagles fan, you will still be a fan.
One of the things I enjoyed with this album was the artistry to make the war protest songs. I think the song "Long Road Out of Eden" is just perfect. I think the middle-eastern instruments set the mood for the song and the slower tempo doesn't seem too last very long before you get some interesting lyrics and excellent guitar. If a 10 minute song is too long, try the 18 minute song "Ordinary People" on Neil Young's Chrome Dreams II album.
Disc 1
1. No More Walks In The Wood 4:00 - Eagles great intro acappella harmony, slower tempo song.
2. How Long 3:20 - Great Frey lead with Henley vocal interplay rocker, debut single, "Already Gone/Take It Easy" vibe, Eagles classic sound, J.D. Souther song.
3. Busy Being Fabulous 4:17 - Henley slower polemic rocker, catchy tune. Nice next single?
4. What Do I Do With My Heart 3:55 - Slower ballad, tear jerker, heart breaker, Frey lead.
5. Guilty of the Crime 3:44 - Nice Walsh rocker with a good guitar solo and later piano solo.
6. I Don't Want to Hear Anymore 4:25 - Schmit lead, great drumming, heart breaking lamentation, ballad.
7. Waiting in the Weeds 7:10 - Henley lead, "Every dog will have his day...", mandolin, great harmonizing, fave for many.
8. No More Cloudy Days 3:58 - Frey lead, upbeat tune, nice sax solo.
9. Fast Company 3:57 - Henley Prince-like falsetto, which you may either love or hate -or be fast company?
10. Do Something 5:06 - Schmit lead, slower ballad, nice harmonizing, call-to-action song.
11. You Are Not Alone 2:30 - Frey mid-tempo, upbeat friend comforting song, revolution army could march to this.
Disc 2
1. Long Road Out of Eden 10:15 - Henley lead, great protest epic title song with middle eastern instrumental, great guitar solo, lyrics. The long one, for whom the bell tolls?
2. I Dreamed There Was No War 1:37 - Strictly instrumental.
3. Somebody 4:12 - Great Frey rocker, hot guitar solo, head banger.
4. Frail Grasp on the Big Picture 5:10 - Great Henley rocking rant song, great guitar.
5. Last Good Time in Town 7:15 - Great Walsh rocker, reminds me of Steely Dan "Do It Again/FM." Cool. For those of us who need a mental health day, perhaps we'd play this.
6. I Love to Watch A Woman Dance 3:11 - Slower tempo, mandolin, Frey lead.
7. Business As Usual 5:34 - Henley anti-consumerism vitriol rocker, "Inside Job" vibe.
8. Center of the Universe 3:48 - Eagles harmony, Beatlesque.
9. It's Your World Now 4:20 - Frey leads with a Mexicali sound to transport you to a clime where a sombrero could be worn.
Free Music Review: WORTH the wait. Different, but brilliant, too Hit: 5 Stars
I'm a long-time Eagles fan...although I discovered them a bit too late. I got into them JUST as they broke up after their Long Run promotional tour circa late 1980 or early '81. My goal (briefly anyway) was to see them in concert and as I mentioned that to my oldest sister she comically joked "That'll be a bit difficult..." not realizing at that point they were (at the time) finished with each other, and Hell would freeze over before they could ever see themselves recording together again. Thankfully they got the Ski Run's up in the netherworld because Hell Freezes Over was simply amazing.
My dream to see them live finally materialized in 2000 (still ranking as THE single greatest concert I have ever attended) and the 6 years they took to produce this record seemed intolerable at the very least. They slowly teased us with 'Hole In The World', 'No More Cloudy Days' amongst a few others and it always seemed as though their first full studio album in 28 years was '...just around the corner.' I bought my copy at Walmart the day it went on sale on my way to work at 5 in the morning. Yeah, I REALLY wanted this disc.
So was the wait worth it?? That is a bit more complicated to answer however. I recall back when the Beatles released those two new songs based on minor recordings left behind by John Lennon on the Anthology CD's and I remember how disappointed I was after hearing them. However after being exposed to them for a while, I discovered something interesting: I really began to appreciate them. The same goes for 'Long Road Out Of Eden'. Some of the songs have instant appeal...and some grow on you over time, and become--after a few spins--VERY likeable.
I've been in radio for nearly 20 years, and I have seen it happen time and again: famous groups get back together and produce a new studio album that invariably sucks -- yet sells by the millions. Fleetwood Mac is but one example. I was terrified that my Eagles would make the same mistake. Could they make magic again after all these years? Were they tapped out creatively? Do they even SOUND good after all this time? Again, the answer may be as different for you as it is for me, but I have to say that I was absolutely satisfied with what I got for my $11.88 at Walmart.
Disc 1 is MUCH better than Disc 2 -- again, MY opinion here. The long and epic title track is simply amazing and I was unbelievably thrilled to hear that the vocals of Glenn, Don, Timothy and Joe are still as pristine as you could ever hope them to be. Many of the tracks harken back to the bands origin with that classic 'Country/Rock' combination that made such classics as, 'Lyin' Eyes' sound so great, and yet they inject fantastic R&B rhythm into more than a few songs. Don't worry, Joe Walsh has brought some of his rockin' style to the plate, too, and the smooth and high vocals of Timothy is just incredible, and VERY welcome here.
For those who prayed and literally expected two CD's worth of future Hotel California's here will be obviously disappointed. However, if you make allowances for the years in between as well as personal growth, and listen to the songs for the simple melodies that they are, you are certainly going to find hours and hours worth of music to savor. I have discovered that as I have become older, I appreciate music for much different reasons than I did (for the most part anyway) when I was younger. I have a rather large taste in musical styles (from Van Halen and James Taylor to Alabama) and yet I sometimes OVER-analyze music way too much. The bottom line is this: The Eagles STILL have it (IMO) but for those who expect 20 songs that are as instantly appealing as some of their classics may just be a little upset. Face it, these boys have a LOT to live up to. Their Greatest Hits Vol 1 has now surpassed Thriller as the biggest selling record of all-time...and it continues to sell thousands of copies every single year. The reason for that is simple: no matter HOW long ago they were recorded, great music will always BE great. I submit that the Long Road Out Of Eden can stand side-by-side (but for different reasons) with the best music the Eagles have ever produced. Great stuff by arguably the greatest American Band ever assembled.
Take it for what it's worth...and for MY $$, it's worth a LOT.
Free Music Review: The Eagles Soar Hit: 5 Stars
Title: Long Road Out Of Eden
Artist: Eagles (AKA, The Eagles)
Music: A
Performance: A+
Recording: A-
The Eagles placed their first chart hit in 1971 and went on to become the best country rock band in the land, and perhaps the world. I'm generally not much of a country music fan, but I gotta admit, those 5 guys made me an Eagles fan! If I had to sum up The Eagles' music in a single word, that word would be FANTABULOUS.
When The Eagles broke up in 1981, band members were asked when they would again perform together. I think it was Don Henley who replied... "when hell freezes over"
In 1994 The Eagles produced a reunion tour and a live MTV special. It was decided to record the MTV performance and release it on both standard CD & CD Surround formats. It seamed only logical that that CD was titled, Hell Freezes Over.
Since then, The Eagles have performed together on a regular basis and became one of the top grossing concert performers. The resulting CD's and DVD's from those concerts sold millions of copies.
But, there have been no new 'all studio' albums since 1979, until now. Long Road Out Of Eden is The Eagles' first such studio recording in 28 years and it is fantastic! Listen to these guys...especially on the opening track, No More Walks In the Wood...a cappella + solo guitar. With the exception of Don Felder, The Eagles have lost nothing, and if anything, vocally they sound better than ever and musically... the magic of The Eagles continues.
By now you must realize that I like this CD and I strongly recommend it to anyone who appreciates truly good music. The only criticism I have is a very small one and it involves distribution of the CD by a single retailer. But that's a marketing decision made by people who know about these things than I do, and hey, Wal-Mart is for Carolyn May and I, a great place to shop. Plus the fact that Wal-Mart typically sells this 2 disc musical gem at under $12.00, makes it completely acceptable to us.
Long Road Out Of Eden - my private edit & re-sequenced version
I recently purchased at 30 pack of `audiophile grade' black CD-R discs. Black colored discs are suppose to be able to reduce or eliminate laser light reflections that may be bouncing around in a cd player and thus, produce superior sound from what is possible using the typical shinny silver discs. I chose to test this with Long Road Out Of Eden. The reasons I had for choosing to use this cd are...
a. At about 88 minutes, I found it to be too long
b. Available recording time on all CD-R's is just under 80 minutes
c. For me, Long Road Out Of Eden contains a small amount of music that I prefer not to listen to.
d. I felt that the recording quality of Long Road Out Of Eden was such that improvements afforded by a black cd would be evident
... so thusly and so, it was for me, the perfect choice for this test.
I edited out 3 songs and did a bit of re-sequencing. The track listing on my `private version' of Long Road Out Of Eden is as follows:
I DREAMED THERE WAS NO WAR
NO MORE WALKS IN THE WOOD
HOW LONG
BUSY BEING FABULOUS
WHAT DO I DO WITH MY HEART
WAITING IN THE WEEDS
NO MORE CLOUDY DAYS
FAST COMPANY
DO SOMETHING
YOU ARE NOT ALONE
SOMEBODY
I LOVE TO WATCH A WOMAN DANCE
BUSINESS AS USUAL
CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE
IT'S YOUR WORLD NOW
LONG ROAD OUT OF EDEN
In the process of all of this, I think I ended up with an overall program that is not only easier to listen to, but is more `user friendly' by being on a single disc. Insofar as the effect of recording on a black cd instead of a silver cd... it's all in the ear of the beholder.
Free Music Review: Review take 2 --- Should have been a single disc... Hit: 5 Stars
I wrote a review for this the week after I got it, and was very excitied to have a new Eagles CD, and got carried away. Now, months after, I realize that while it is very good, and one of the top Eagles CDs, there are more than a few songs that dont need to be there. Songs that have been done before, and done better.
Let's go!
Disc 1:
1) No More Walk in the Woods - Nice. But not necessary. You want harmonies, listen to Saturday Night, Take It to the Limit, and Seven Bridges Road. A very good song, but didnt need to be on the album.
2) How Long - An instant classic. Take It Easy, James Dean, Already Gone, How Long. The perfect 3:30 single only the Eagles can do with their mix of country and rock. The perfect summer song, blast it on this 4th of July weekend.
3) Busy Being Fabulous - A nice song, but that's just it. Just nice. A good simple song that has classic Eagles feel. I would keep it on.
4) What Do I Do With My Heart - Awful. Mushy pop song to the max. Might be the worst song the Eagles ever did. GET RID OF IT!
5) Guilty of the Crime - Joe to the rescue! A fun song only Joe Walsh could go. Keep it on, along with Busy... it makes the album more fun!
6) I Don't Want to Hear Anymore - I do not like Timmy B. His voice does not fit well, and this song is too poppy. Get rid of it.
7) Waiting in the Weeds - Very, very nice song. Almost beautiful. One of the best on the album. Henley does a great job. Has almost a Sad Cafe, Last Resort feel.
8) No More Cloudy Days - Not sure. A very nice song... but kinda sappy. A little too poppy... this is a rough one to classify if it should be on the album or not.
9) 10) 11)
- No
- No
- No
Fast Company = Lets try and do Fast Lane again, but add some great horns...NOPE.
The other two are just bad pop songs. Do Something is one of the all time worst.
Disc 2:
1) Long Road Out of Eden - 10 minutes of 21st century "classic" Eagles. Trying to do Hotel California again? Maybe... but it works! One of the best on the album.
2) I Dreamed There Was No War - Any other title and everyone would say this was filler. Pointless.
3) Somebody - I bet a lot of people hate this, but I think it works. I like the rocky feel... who is it about??? Bush? Maybe...
4) Frail Grasp on the Big Picture - 2nd fav on the album (How Long). Great lyrics that truly descibe this country. (As does Long Road) Great guitar and drums, and Henley fires the lyrics perfect. Love th church choir and religion part. Steller track!
5) Last Good Time in Town - Steely Dan feel + Joe Walsh = Amazing!! One of the best on the album! Think FM or Do It Again by Steely Dan. Great feel to this song, great vocals... just a fun song. Thanks Joe!
6) I Love to Watch a Woman Dance - Pop. I kinda like it, but get rid of it... put it on your solo album Glenn...
7) Business as Usual - Great song, except anyone else find it ironic that Don is singing about Business as Usual and then charges 150 bucks for a lawn seat at their concert?? A great song, never the less.
8) 9)
The last 2 get rid of... just bad.
Ok, let's see what we got:
1) No More Walks in the Wood (optional)
2) How Long
3) Busy Being Fabulous
4) Guilty of the Crime
5) Waiting in the Weeds
6) No More Cloudy Days (optional)
7) Long Road out of Eden
8) Somebody
9) Frail Grasp on the Big Picture
10)Last Good Time in Town
11)Business as Usual
Those 11 (or 9) songs would be a great album.
Still one of the best of 2007.
