Free Music Review: Busy Being Fabulous...Again!
Hit: 5 Stars

If it's true that "a day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as a day"...then a considerable assembly of Eagles loyalists, like me, have waited several million years too long for "Long Road." Or perhaps, as eternity will soon disclose, it was just 5 minutes ago? In any case, there's much I could write about these guys during my 35 years of faithful allegiance, much to say about this new (as well as old) "Long Road," but here's the chase: If all you got to hear (or all they released) was Disc-2, the majority of true Eagles' fans would've been okay with that; in fact, most would've been ecstatic, I'm sure. And yet the naked truth is that Disc-2 actually pales (if you can believe it!) in comparison to the incredible gems on Disc-1!

Surprisingly, the opening track "No more walks in the woods," upon first hearing, actually swept me back to (pre-Eagles) days of listening over and over again to the C,S,N debut LP. Anybody else feel like that? Those were the days when our Eagles (then Glenn, Don, Randy, and Bernie...with much help and inspiration from Jackson Browne & J.D. Souther) had not yet flown, but were playing the local L.A. bars as L. Ronstadt's house band. Long time friend and pt-time songwriting Eagle, John David Souther, whose "How Long" track (written in the early 70s)seems the commercial chartbuster at this point, was the 'other' dead guy (along with Jackson) on the back of the "Desperado" LP.

I'm not ready to review every track at this juncture. Besides, how boring, or what a frail grasp (of the big picture). I'll just say that it's certainly no accident that these guys (all rock-n-roll A-Listers individually, with resident mystic cynic, ace Don Henley (even if he is doctrinally off base much of the time) still flying high at the helm--with longtime partner, heartbeat Glenn Frey (not to mention Sentimental Tim & Chainsaw Joe) are still, unequivocally, without a doubt, incomparably, as they were back when,...the finest band in the land! And those unmistakably perfect Eagles' harmonies are still, incredibly, well....perfect! In fact, they're better than ever, as evidenced in the CD's best overall track (in my opinion), "Waiting in the Weeds." It just doesn't get much better than that!

In short, it's clear these guys haven't missed a beat: the harmonies, the vocals, the tunes, the timing; everything is clean, crisp, tight! These, my friends, are...THE EAGLES! And this "Long Road" is definitely something to remember, a Keeper of the highest order!

Free Music Review: I am thoroughly impressed...
Hit: 5 Stars

It's interesting reading all these other reviews, which tend to be either very positive or very negative. How anyone can be disappointed with Long Road Out Of Eden is beyond me. To me, this is one of their strongest releases and damn impressive. Some complain about its length, and that some of these songs shouldn't have been included, but, apart from the cover of the dull Guilty Of The Crime and Glenn Frey 90's solo outtake-sounding What Do I Do With My Heart, I certainly do not agree. Why they didn't include Joe Walsh's One Day At A Time instead (from the live DVD), I don't understand - except perhaps because it didn't fit in terms of lyrical content. Others complain that some of the ballads are too soft and sentimental, but that was always a part of the Eagles sound (The Best Of My Love, I Can't Tell You Why, etc.), so - again! - I don't agree. I wouldn't want to be without Do Something (excellent), You Are Not Alone (very pretty melody) or I Don't Want To Hear Any More. The acoustic ballad Center Of The Universe gives me goosebumps - I think it's one of their most most beautiful ballads, almost up there with After The Thrill Is Gone (1975). The charming Mexican-inspired It's Your World Now makes me think of the Desperado album for some reason. The title track is another favorite: The guitar solo puts a lump in my throat and reminds you why these guys are still up there with the very best in the music business. I could go on and on about these songs (Waiting In The Weeds, Frail Grasp On The Big Picture, Business As Usual, etc.) - they really are THAT good. If like me you were very apprehensive about Long Road Out Of Eden based on the four, very bland, new songs they recorded for Hell Freezes Over, then do NOT worry. The Eagles are back, and they are outstanding. Every time I am listening to Long Road Out Of Eden in one sitting, by the time I get to the end of it, I am thoroughly impressed and really rather overwhelmed and touched by the fact that they have managed to make such a superior comeback after all these years. There may not be any songs to rival old classics such as One Of These Nights, Lyin' Eyes or Hotel California, but Long Road Out Of Eden is one of their most consistent albums despite its length. And second single Busy Being Fabulous is a beautifully constructed song that deserves to be on a future Greatest Hits cd along with all those old classics. Long Road Out Of Eden is a far better album than any fan had any reason to expect. It's another classic by The Eagles. Highly recommended!

Free Music Review: One of the best CDs of 2007
Hit: 5 Stars

I am going to review the music on this CD and not like some others on here who seem to have a problem with the CD being sold at a 'big box' retailer or that original band members from the early 70's are not in the band(and haven't been for 30+ years). This is the lineup I became familiar with when I heard 'New Kid in Town' on the radio in 1976 when I was kid(minus Don Felder - I know I know! calm down you guys). That was the first song I ever heard from Eagles. I remember it quite clearly.

This CD is great. I can't really think of any real clunkers on here, although 'Guilty of the Crime', the Joe Walsh song, seems to be a little on the bland side. There might be a few songs not as interesting as others, which is true of any CD by any band, but it's still great. I was dissapointed that 'One Day At A Time" was not on here because it was a great song(performed live by Joe Walsh on the Farewell 1 - Live in Melbourne DVD). Don Henley and Glen Frey still write great songs and sing harmony very well after all these years.. Being a fan of Don Henley's solo work, I particularily liked his songs which could've easily fit on his solo albums I suppose. "Waiting in the Weeds" is the one true standout of the CD out of the 20 songs. I have replayed that 7+ minute song over and over. The curiously titled "I Dreamed There Was No War" is a short instrumental.. The title was an interesting choice(regardless of your views on ANY war).

Basically what anyone needs to ask themselves before buying this is WHY are they or are they NOT buying 'Long Road Out Of Eden'. If it's because the CD is only available at a 'big box' retailer, than it's your loss. Don't go in the place then and go buy your Cheetos, Pepsis and Doritos at some other 'big box' retailer - you are in the minority and you are missing out on one of the best CDs to come out this year. Same goes for those who harp on Don Felder being gone or the original members from the first few albums(I don't even remember their names to be honest, no disrespect intended). If you like great music and their past songs, it's a no brainer. I doubt this band would put something out half baked when it's been 28 years since 'The Long Run' and 13 years since they got back together for the 'Hell Freezes Over' tour/cd/dvd.

If your Eagles fan, you have to get this. It's one of the best CDs of the year to come out.

Free Music Review: Pleasantly surprised....I love it
Hit: 5 Stars

I wasn't keeping up with the current projects of the Eagles, but I have always been a long time fan. I saw them in concert two years ago for the first time, and I thought, the Eagles are simply awesome. I didn't even know they were coming out with a new album. So, when I happened to be at Sam's club and saw the 20 song CD, I was pleasantly surprised. I thought the Eagles? 20 songs? something in it will be worth listening to. Man, am I glad that I picked it up. There are a few songs that I probably won't listen to very often, and how can there not be with 20 songs. Maybe some of the people that don't really like it, are people that were waiting, and expecting too much. They were way too hyped up. Usually, when we get too hyped up, we are disappointed. Let's face it, classics are classics. Maybe some day this album will have a couple classic songs, maybe not. In the mean time, I'll just in enjoy some great new Eagles tunes.

A few have complained about the sappy ballads, but I personally like the ballads (from all rock bands), so sue me.

Personal favorites (not necessarily in this order):

Long Road out of Eden - Epic - yes, Hotel California - no; Whatever the case I love Epic songs especially when they have a great sound and this one has it.

How Long - Classic Eagles Southern Rock sound

Waiting in the Weeds - Love the melody of the chorus - song gave me chills - the lyrics are great

Busy Being Fabulous - Don Henley, what can I say

No More Cloudy Days - I actually heard this in concert 2 years ago.

Your Not Alone - Great lyrics and it brought out some great emotions that I have for my own daughter (Glenn wrote for his teenage daughter)

Do Something - Reminds me of "Love Will Keep Us Alive", which I love.

Somebody - I swear I've heard this song before, but whatever, I love it, then again, I love almost anything that Don sings.

Frail Grasp on the Big Picture - I like it, but it is sort of a remake (different sound/beat though) of "Get Over It" from Hell Freezes Over.
I like the last part, where he says, "And we pray to our lord, who we know is America..."

I will need to listen to the CDs a few more time, but I liked all of these songs on the first pass.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Free Music Review: Has to be five stars
Hit: 5 Stars

Commercially, the first Eagles studio album in 28 years was always going to be a winner.

Critically, though, it's a much harder test, in some ways an almost no-win situation. If the band had sounded just like they did in the '70s, they'd have pleased the fan base but been panned as has-beens by the critics; on the other hand, producing something radically different would have been equally hazardous.

As if following their own past catalogue wasn't a tough enough call, they also had to follow on from some superb solo albums, most notably from Don and Glenn. Though I'm die-hard Eagles fan since schooldays (Dad brought 'One of These Nights' back from the US in '75, and I went straight out and bought the other albums!), I'd have expected to be giving this four stars at best.

By the second listen, it had to be five stars. It's a tour de force - original, but consistent with what we expect from one of the greatest rock bands in history.

This album is evolutionary rather than revolutionary. It pays tribute to the legacy, but it also moves on, seamlessly and with great originality. For example, if the single 'How Long' sounds like Eagles, 70s-vintage, that's because it was written (by the great JD Souther) back in '72. A strong thread here has been taking the best of the guys' solo styles - for example, 'Busy Being Fabulous' would fit on any of Henley's solo albums - and then making the total into more than the sum of the parts.

This album surpasses my expectations, so much so that, in 2 discs' worth of music, it's very hard to find an even halfway disappointing track (if pushed, 'Guilty of the Crime' and 'It's Your World Now' are as near as I can get to a 'don't like this one' cut).

I know there are loads of reviews out there saying 'it's the Eagles, of course it's great', which perhaps doesn't help.

Honestly, though, forget the hype, buy it, judge it on its merits.

'Long Road Out of Eden' isn't flawless, of course, but this is a truly superb album, and an effortless five stars.
