Free Music Notes for Long Road Out of EdenFree Music Review: I Can't Believe They Pulled It Off Hit: 5 Stars
After 28 years I wasn't sure that these old farts could pull it off. I did not want to get my hopes up because I didn't want to be disappointed. The first song, acapella, got my attention immediately. From there I just listened and went slowly from hopeful to having a big smile on my face. THE EAGLES ARE BACK! Don't let anybody tell you different. This album is impressive. I'm not going to go into every song but this album is worthy of the Eagles name and will go down as one of their better albums. Every song is different and some are better than others as in any album. But this is two CD's worth of good material, not filler. The best song on the album, in my opinion, is "Waiting in the Weeds." It's a great song and will go down as an Eagles classic.
The Eagles don't have the hard rock edge in this album that the departed Don Felder brought, but at this stage these guys have matured and don't need it. I thought that the Eagles would miss Felder a lot more, but Steuart Smith fills in seamlessly - you don't even notice that Felder's gone (Smith also had a big hand in this album apparently).
The Eagles will probably clean up at the Grammys, a la Eric Clapton when he returned with Unplugged. This album is that good. My only minor complaint is that the sequencing of the album could have been better. The best songs are all on the first disc. The Eagles are outselling Britney Spears at the time of this review. Maybe people do actually appreciate real music.
Free Music Review: Appreciation from a Boomer and Non-Eagles Fan Hit: 5 Stars
I write this as a 51-yr old boomer. In the 70s, I enjoyed the early countrified Eagles -- 'Take it Easy' and 'Peaceful Easy Feeling' for instance. As they got bigger, I lost interest. I never disliked them, but I found them a little generic. I liked Joe Walsh as a solo performer, but never really thought he meshed well as an Eagle. However, even though I panned it at the time, I have come to recognize 'Hotel California' as a very good, near-great LP. During the 80s and forward, I have enjoyed some of their solo work, especially Henley's 'End of the Innocence.' So when I learned of this effort, my expectations were modest. I find, however, that this album is a delightful surprise. These guys are sharp pros; they have retained the signature Eagles sound, and they establish a solid groove that percolates through all the tunes on both discs. There is a lot of variety, they trade leads, they do rockers and ballads, and they do them all well. The important thing, and perhaps the hardest part for veterans like this, is to make the product fresh. Are they reaching back, doing the same stuff over again (like, unfortunately, Van Morrison), or are they charting new ground? Well, there is no great breakthrough here, but nor does this sound like old guys staying in their comfy shoes. This won't be the most challenging music you'll hear in 2007, but it will surely be among the most satisfying.
Free Music Review: The Eagles are THE BAND! Hit: 5 Stars
I have been reading the consumer reviews so far and found that most are very complimentary (smart) and a couple are downright funny and some people just don't like ANYTHING! Well, those who have chosen to pan this need to listen more carefully or they need new ears!
The Eagles are truly one of the finest bands to have ever recorded. That said, this new release is another example of the elegance these guys are capable of. You cannot have this kind of staying power unless you are downright and unmistakenly great. The writing, the vocals, the instrumental prowess, the arranging --- all of it! And......to reach our age and still sound this good is truly a gift.
I reacted upon first hearing by thinking 'oh, more of the same' but by the time I had listened to it the third and fourth time, I realized I was hooked. The new melodies were going through my head again and again. Their harmonies are unequaled in the industry as is their song craftmanship, and their supporting musicians are of the best. The production is amazing. It's absolutely another Eagles classic and shall be recognized as one of the great records of 2007.
Way to go guys! Oh --- and you detractors --- give this record your undivided attention for a few hundred more listenings!
Free Music Review: Short road to musical perfection! Hit: 5 Stars
The anticipation I had while awaiting this large new collection of work, was completely worth the wait! Immediately, with the onset of the first song those familiar harmonies hit you and you find yourself seduced by your old friend. But since it is all new material it feels like the first time of course.
I could not pause the playback, I let both discs play all the way through and as I progressed, it got richer, better, stronger. It was completely fulfilling, the sounds have all those variable genres that the Eagles have always been able to pull off. There was the rock sound, that pensive 'losing love' sound, the lone cowboy sound and even a couple (especially the one the album shares its name with) that are absolutely epic in nature.
The lyrics also have a full range of body, from light to moving and from political to poetic. They are written with an artful skill while being completely up to date with current events. If you are a fan, you will not be disappointed, this Eagles album gives you everything they have always promised you, if you are new to the Eagles this album is just as good a place to start as any of the Eagles other satisfying compilations. I'm so glad some things never change.
Free Music Review: Music That Stands Alongside The Eagles' Greatest Work Hit: 5 Stars
I wasn't expecting much out of this two-CD set. I've been a huge Eagles fan since the early 1970s, have seen them at least 7 times in concert, and know the words to almost every one of their songs. But the fact that The Long Run had some songs I didn't really like, the fact that the four new songs they released on Hell Freezes Over were only OK to good, and the fact that it had been 28 years since their last full-length release left me with low expectations for this CD. But on my first listen to it the music simply blew me away. I can't believe how great this music sounds, and there are only maybe two songs out of the 20 that I thought weren't up to the quality of the other 18 songs. But on my second listen I even began liking those other two songs, too!
I can't stop listening to "How Long," a song written by their old friend J.D. Souther. I feel like I'm listening to a current version of "Already Gone" in the way the song feels, and I can't stop smiling when I'm listening to it.
It's definitely been a long wait to hear this music, and it's an absolute thrill to be listening to it now.
