Free Music Notes for Kingdom Come & Lord Baltimore

Free Music Review: A not so forgotten group
Hit: 5 Stars

I First heard this group in 1970 when I lived in Maryland. Then a few years later I went looking for their albums but Couldn't find them in the stores so I drove my new Levis Gremlin up to NYC in 1973 and looked for them. Bought them at Tower Records somewhere around broadway. Can't quite remember that far back.(Lucky to find them new.) I still got'em stored away in moth balls (so to speak). I made a few copies on cassette and listen to them when I want to get all charged up. (great motivational music!) But I have to say I do not see anything in their music that resembles Led Zep or black sabbath etc. WTF are people doing writing reviews like that. The band has a sound unlike any rock band I know of. Period. But that's my opinion only. They should have got another drummer and taught him the licks so John G. could front the vocals instead of being behind a drum set.

Personally I am a Deep Purple fan from way back. I think they were leaders of them all because they were so versatile. Was this band? Time never told us.

"Ain't got hung on you" on the first album totally moved me out of my chair all on it's own like magic. "Man from Manhattan" and "Where are we going" on the second album was my favorites. Even though it was really not a "live" recording. Strong vocals and solid bass lines with get up and move guitar licks made this band overall so unforgettable. The first album was blistering with screams and guitar twisting and turning until I just couldn't sit still, like being right there with them inside the mental/metal disturbed recording studio. The drums were beat with baseball bats I think and the vocals were shouting screams high pitching and long lasting, sounding retarded like he forgot the words and was faking them with stutters and stumbles. Funny to listen to the first time. The bass lines on a few of those songs sounded like Grand Funk railroads bass. Dig? I mean very pronounced hard thumping/hard driving type rhythm.

These dudes messed up not making fame and fortune but they can still be heard even if they are forgotten. It was worth the time and effort I put into finding their albums way back then in the christmas of '73. And I thank them for all the effort they put into the making the albums. And thanks be to Eddie Kramer for mixing it all up too. Because these dudes were not sounding all that great in person if you know what I mean. It takes a tough man to make a star sound good. Listen up Jimi Hendrix.

Free Music Review: A Very Important Piece of Metal History
Hit: 5 Stars

Sir Lord Baltimore was a trio from Brooklyn that left one big scorching mark on the early metal scene that was developing during the late 1960's and early 1970's. This band is often grouped in with many English bands of the era, like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. While these bands reached a higher level in the industry than Sir Lord Baltimore, it must be said that the band from Brooklyn encompassed a sound so pure and raw that it simply will knock you over the first time you hear them.
With the help of the internet and die-hard metal fans; bands like Sir Lord Baltimore and Blue Cheer are finally getting the respect they deserve.
This CD contains both Sir Lord Baltimore albums and is simply mind blowing! The lyrics alone are just incredible, and when you think that the drummer is also the lead singer it's all the more mind-numbing. The guitar and bass work are intense, and when put all together, is like being caught in a heavy metal thunderstorm.
The song "Lake Isle of Innersfree" deserves special note, I feel, as possibly the earliest heavy metal ballad. The harpsicord work is incredibly beautiful.
Ultimately, no metal archivist should go without this collection. This is a must-have for anyone exploring metal's early days and deserves proper respect among even todays metal fans. These guys have a sound like no one else on the planet, then or now. I highly recommend this album to all metal fans!

Free Music Review: An early Metal masterpiece
Hit: 5 Stars

Everyone knows the three main Proto Metal bands; Sabbath, Purple, and Zeppelin. But how many have heard of Baltimore? When I first heard this album I was floored first of all by it's heaviness and it's raw fury, and second by the fact that it seemed to be more influential than I could have thought!I hear elements in SLB's music that had become familiar to me through bands like Iron Maiden, Dio, Judas Priest, Kiss, The Cult, early Metallica and even Deep Purple and early Van Halen. For instance; it's hard to believe that songs like Kingdom Come, Hellhound and Ceasar LXXI were recorded in 1970/71. They sound like they could have come straight out of the NWOBHM scene 10 years later. Tell me that Iron Maiden didn't rip Hellhound off in Murders In The Rue Morgue. Tell me Metallica didn't do the same with Woman Tamer in Metal Militia.

The Fuzz Tone on this album (these albums) screams and shreds. Very dirty and "60's-ish" on the first album, and cleaner, more controlled (though no less heavy) on the second. The drums pound and the vocals roar. This guy could sing!! If they had become bigger and released more albums, he would definitely have been included in the Ultimate Metal Singer cannon.

So if you're a fan of true Heavy Metal, you won't be disappointed by this cd. It may even become one of your favorites.

Free Music Review: Lost Classic, Musicians Ripped Off
Hit: 5 Stars

I found this album in a discount bin in an old market in West Virginia. Got it for $1.00 or something in 1976. I liked the cover but wondered about the musicians when John Garner was listed as playing "drum" and "cymbal." I thought that odd, but it might have been a typo or a deliberate attempt at sarcasm. Well, I took the chance and bought it and was quite surprised. I pictured some kind of rock band with the drummer playing a snare drum and cymbal, or something and instead a heavy blast assaulted my ears! These guys rocked! I still have that album somewhere and just wished I had the CD too. I never heard their other album, Sir Lord Baltimore, but if it is anything like Kingdom Come, wow! A funny story was that recently I found out that the guitar player, Louis Dambra was in another very obscure band that I loved, The Koala. And they were not from Australia unless some Aussies annexed New York City!

I am not surprised that the musicians got ripped off as John Garner said in his review and I sure wish they could have seen something from all those sales! Mr. Garner, my hat is off to you! You and your cohorts made a real classic! Would love to hear from you. Rock on!

Free Music Review: MUSICAL EXTREMITY AT IT'S BEST
Hit: 5 Stars

It's very odd that this eclectic and innovative band , which is indeed one of the first heavy metal bands never got much acclaim... But the reason is simple... Sir Lord Baltimore was much too extreme for their time . The agression posed in Kingdom Come is earth shattering . Thats what seperates this band from Black Sabbath . Black Sabbath was dark and heavy, and Sir Lord Baltimore was bombastic and over the top. On top of that is the fact that they were "American" at a time when all the proto-metal bands were "British" excluding Blue Cheer . Their albums were very underground in their time. The albums could hardly ever be found back then unless you went to a real record shop most likely in a big city. They would have never had radio play either because their music just isn't "radio friendly" even in 1970. Musical Extremity at it's best . By the way the All Music guide entry on Sir Lord Baltimore is horrible . It's probably written by some old timer who doesn't know much about heavy metal. He calls Sir Lord Baltimore "generic" HE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HIMSELF . SOMEONE NEEDS TO WRITE A NEW ENTRY...
