Free Music Notes for An Ancient MuseFree Music Review: Good stuff Hit: 5 Stars
An Ancient Muse is an excellent album. I find myself listening to it often while working or driving around town. If you're new to Loreena McKennitt, I suggest starting off with her earlier albums, such as The Mask and Mirror or The Book of Secrets (those contain some of her best vocals). However if you're a fan of her music already then you'll most likely enjoy this album just as much as the others. She obviously goes for a different style and theme for this album compared to her previous releases, and I can respect that. It's not my favorite of her collections, but the quality of the music and her voice is still top notch.
I'm just glad I have something new to listen to from her. After hearing The Book of Secrets back at its release I snatched up each and every one of her previous major albums and enjoy them all. Selfishly I feel deprived over the last decade from the lack of a new release from her, and my hopes are high that she'll continue to produce excellent music in the years to come.
Her music is unique and I haven't found anything else that quite fills her niche as well as she does.
Free Music Review: Great great album!! Hit: 5 Stars
I can understand all people that have gotten dissapointed with this new album. Although it may have a familiar sound, reminiscence of previous albums, i have found this one a very special one. I cannot put my finger on it and say why, but i should say is even better than Book of Secrets.
I'm not one that listens to her music everyweek or not even once a month, but she is still one of my favorites musicians and i cherish to have most of her cd's in my wide collection. Maybe that's the main reason i don't find it so repetitive, or more of the same.....but the most important thing: i enjoy it very much and love it!
I got it yesterday and i'm already captivated but the soaring tempo, voice and instrumentation in the songs. The more i listen to it, the more i like it. Guys, give yourself some time. Listen to it, find the special moment, that special mood.
Highly recommended. You don't find music of this nature out there so easily: heavenly voice, real instruments, magnificent lyrics, beautiful arrangements.
Happy Holidays to everybody, we' got the gift of her music back!! Let's celebrate it!
Free Music Review: A Seductively Beautiful Album Hit: 5 Stars
First, just look at the cover of this album.....do you not find this beautiful package "making you wonder what the music is like on the cd inside"?
Well, it is exotic, it is ethereal, swirling, swaying, drawing you in...
Loreena McKennitt is, simply put, one of the most talented of the Celtic musicians around. I discovered her years ago, and I have collected all her albums. They are all beautiful. Each is like a "unit" unto itself, all the songs connecting and holding together as one.
This album is breathtaking, and with each listening (as all her albums are) you come to love it more and more deeply. If you already know Loreena, then you know you "want" this album. If you do not know who she is, or have not heard her music, then by all means, "trust me" on this, and pick up a copy of this marvelous album, take it home, make yourself a cup of tea, turn the lights down low, and sit quietly and let the beauty of her music wash over you....you won't be sorry, and, you'll probably start a search for all the remainder of her releases, too! ~operabruin
Free Music Review: The sounds of silence broken at last. Hit: 5 Stars
For nine long years I, like every other Loreena McKennitt fan, have mourned her extended absence from the music world. Like all of her music everytime I listen to "An Ancient Muse" I hear new nuances of voice and instrument. The range of her singing voice is truly stunning in this album. Though "An Ancient Muse" is a musical journey through the middle east, you can hear the echoes of the footsteps of the ancient Celts, who were the world travelers of their time. My favorite track on this album is "Never-ending Road (Amhràn Duit)" It is a song of ending...the Muse's journey is done...and yet there is the promise of more to come. A deeper meaning can be found in the ancient Celtic belief in an after life. To them, death was but a single event on the never-ending road of life. I also liked "Beneath a Phrygian Sky", "Incantation", and "The English Ladye And the Knight." My favorite album is "The book of Secrets" but I give "An Acnient Muse" a five star rating because it is simply too good not to. :)WELCOME BACK LOREENA!!! :)
Free Music Review: The Return Of Lady Loreena Hit: 5 Stars
Listening to Loreena McKennitt's "An Ancient Muse," her 2006 release and her first new studio album in nine long years, is like welcoming the return of a dear friend. The silent years since 1997's "The Book Of Secrets" have not diminished Loreena's magical touch for celtic/world/pop music. Her singing voice is as soaring as ever, as is her musicianship and her incredible knack for storytelling. The moment you hear her wordless voice on the opening song "Incantation," it's as if she never left. "An Ancient Muse" is easily one of Loreena's best works, and it may even challenge "The Visit" as my new favorite Loreena McKennitt album. Standout tracks include the swaying, hypnotic rhythms of "The Gates Of Istanbul," the passionate sounds of "Caravanserai," the lovely tale of "The English Ladye And The Knight," and the album's epic track, the gorgeous "Beneath A Phrygian Sky." As always, Loreena's music remains captivating and entrancing throughout. "An Ancient Muse" is an outstanding, most-welcome return for Loreena McKennitt.
