Free Music Notes for An Ancient Muse

Free Music Review: Music can bridge east and west
Hit: 5 Stars

Ever since I got this CD as a gift from my father inlaw I got somehow addicted to it. It is a perfect east-west blend in during a time when all we see is political-cultural rift between the two.

Much of the melodies are inspired by the region. One is actually a fully adapted turkish theme that my grandmother used to play in her lute, very well known under different names in the middle east (Iraq and Syria it is Mughram wisalak), that is Sacred Shabbat. Other melodies blend in Celtic, and new age with Oriental Instruments in such a magnificient way.

Good for you Loreena and I cannot wait to hear your Night in Al Hambra album. Cannot wait to see you live in Concert here in Dubai.

Actually since I heared this CD I became an avid fan of Loreena that I got all her CDs, but the impression that "An Ancient Muse" is still unique among the others.

Free Music Review: Why so long between albums
Hit: 5 Stars

Many of you may not have known that the reason for the long wait between Loreena McKennitt's albums is because her fiance died a very tragic death and she wasn't going to make a new album at the time due to the loss of her beloved. She has apparently changed her mind since then. I am sorry to see that some of you are disappointed in her latest album. After the tragidy of her loved one, I can understand why she made a sadder, more sorrowful sounding album. I like her music no matter what, but before you bash and criticize her newest album too much, please remember that she DIDN'T have to make a new album at all. Keep in mind that the sorrow behind the music may be a way for the artist to express the tragidy behind her loss as well. Also, too much change can sometimes be a bad thing as well.

Free Music Review: If you loved McKennitt's "Highwayman" you'll love this CD
Hit: 5 Stars

It's a collection of a lot of more literary works like her "Highwayman."

Probably my favorite is Sir Walter Scott's "The Ladye and the Knight," but the rest is all good, solid work.

It's nothing different, per se. You can put this CD on back to back with "Book of Secrets" and the ambience is still the same, but I don't think that's such a bad thing. The musicianship is as solid and exacting as the music that made her famous. She's a 'world' musician with a true feel of how the music of the world actually plays--that authenticity combined with her voice and arrangements is what makes her so compelling.

I'd cheerfully buy more McKennitt CDs like this--just don't want to have to wait 10 more years to get them!

Free Music Review: I loved this album
Hit: 5 Stars

In this fascinating album, Loreena McKennitt takes a step away from her normal New Age/Celtic sound, reaching into the Middle East. Four of the tracks - Incantation, The Gates Of Istanbul, Caravanserai, and Sacred Shabbat - all capture that wonderful Levantine sound. The rest of the tracks are solid Loreena McKennitt tunes, sure to please any of her fans.

I have enjoyed Ms. McKennitt for many years now, and was very happy that she has finally come out with a new album. (It's been too long!) Well, let me just say that this album does not disappoint. I loved this album, and highly recommend it. Indeed, I must say that any fan of great music will love this CD. I highly recommend it.

Free Music Review: W O W!
Hit: 5 Stars

I happened across a Christmas song done by Loreena on a compilation CD a few years back and was entranced by her voice and musical arrangement. I'm so glad I sought her out to see what other work she had done. This CD is just amazing. I bought two copies intending on giving them as gifts, but luckily kept one for myself. It has been in my CD player ever since. It is so relaxing and haunting and romantic and energetic all at the same time. It moves me. The vocals are just beautiful. The percussions send chills down my spine. It is marketed as Celtic music, but I can't help but hear a middle eastern sound throughout (probably the lyre). I'd highly recommend this for your collection.
