Free Music Notes for The Visit

Free Music Review: Reverent and powerful. Some of the most beautiful music you will ever hear...certainly one of the most beautiful voices
Hit: 5 Stars

At the opening ceremonies of the Winter 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, BC, I was hoping that her music would be performed, being that she is one of the most recognizable musical talents to ever come out of Canada. Sure enough, they played "The Old Ways" while some performers danced.

This album is one of my favorites, even among all genres. Loreena's voice is so exquisite and celestial, it can only be described as otherworldly. Listen to "Bonny Portmore". It is a mournful lament for the great fallen oak forests of Ireland. I get goose bumps every time I hear it. I played the song for my three brothers and father, and they were all noticeably moved. You can't imagine Mother Earth herself singing a lament for the man-wrought destruction of one of her most magnificent forests, more sincerely or beautifully than Loreena. It's almost as if Mother Nature chose Loreena to stand in for her. The reverence that Loreena has for nature is evident in all of her albums. The same for "Lady of Shalott"...the arrangement for this Tennyson poem is more than 11 minutes in length, and yet, you wish it would never end.

"Greensleeves" is also amazing. Loreena's voice on this piece is still exquisite and yet the tonal range is COMPLETELY different from the aforementioned other two songs. Someone who can change their voice tonality to this extent and have it still be just as magnificent and captivating is a world treasure indeed. Thank God for Loreena McKennitt. I hope that her talent is forever shared in many venues and places around the world. Some have shared their wish that her voice and music be put to use in the next Peter Jackson portrayal of Middle Earth (i.e. The Hobbit films) -- if Jackson can capture the same spirit that he did in the "The Lord of the Rings - The Motion Picture Trilogy (Platinum Series Special Extended Edition)" using Howard Shore, then the films would be worthy of her voice. Give her a listen, and you'll see what I mean. It just fits. If you appreciate beautiful music, you will treasure Loreena McKennitt's "The Visit".

Free Music Review: LM Always Has Something Up Her (Green)Sleeves!
Hit: 5 Stars

Judging by the high number of reviews of this CD, it sounds like if you're a fan of Loreena McKenneth, you a big fan and a devoted one. Count me as one, someone who eagerly awaits new material from here, especially after she releases CDs like this one. Actually, it's hard to believe "The Visit" is only a couple years short of being 20 years old.

Anyone who appreciates Loreena's crystal-clear, haunting voice and those especially who enjoy a Celtic ballad should love this effort.

Of the nine songs, my favorites are the first five, capped off by Loreena's "take," if you will on the centuries-old "Greensleeves." For those familiar with this song, McKennit's version might surprise them, or even insult some purists, but I thought her bluesy touch to this classic was very, very cool. Also, how many songs do you hear writtten by King Henry VIII?

Whether she's exploring Ireland, the Middle Ages, Dickens or the Middle East, LM always surprises me, and rarely disappoints. "Greensleeves" is a good example of that.

Free Music Review: From centuries past ......
Hit: 5 Stars

I am listening to this album right now in my iPod and have decided to review each album I

have in one sitting so I can truly tell it how it is (from where I'm sittin' anyway !!) and

do Loreena justice.

This particular album is a little more Middle Ages-ish to me. The music on this album

really tells a story - as was done in those days - and is emphasized and characterized by

Loreena's voice as well as the instruments.

It's gallant. (The Lady of Shallot)

It's bold. (The Old Ways)

It's proud. (All Souls Night)

It's full of spirit ..... (Bonny Portmore)

Yet rimmed with a hint of softness. (Cymbeline)

This really is a beautiful, beautiful album - as they all are.

Loreena is a special one - and we are lucky to have her.

Yep - don't think about it too hard ...... JUST BUY IT !!

Free Music Review: Being Visited
Hit: 5 Stars

This was the first of Loreena's albums that I ever heard, way back in 1992. It always played in a room at a bookstore that friends and I used to visit, and seemed to be 'calling' to us to that room; drawn by the mystica verve of the tunes. Finally, I bought it; and it opened a whole world to me; a realm of textured sound, sensuous thought, and aesthetic harmony--yet not "New Age." There are deep rhythms here, and a flow that makes the CD as a whole seem like one, unified, artistic creation; all of the tracks hang together, creating a melancholy yet en-spiriting experience that may well lead the listener to meditative centering, trancing or perhaps even inspired circle dancing. It lifts me up when I'm down, and brings me to the vortex when I'm strung out in too many directions. A healing album, as well as one that stirs the imagination. By all means, experience this one!

Free Music Review: Her masterpiece "The Visit"
Hit: 5 Stars

I think this is the best album by Loreena Mckennitt. It is stunning and amazing. I know her other albums are more popular, but this is her most beautiful work. It starts out with "All Souls Night" which is a pretty good song but not a standout. The great songs begin with "Between the Shadows" (an instrumental) followed by "The Lady of Shalott" (a masterpiece) then "Greensleeves" (another masterpiece) and later the best song on the album and my favorite "The Old Ways". I think this might the best song she has ever done. It is sublime and a work of genius.
