Free Music Review: A TRIUMPH
Hit: 5 Stars

I am not your average Country fan, because there are only a few artists that I truly like. Loretta Lynn is at the top of the list, and this album is one of the best that I've ever heard. Loretta Lynn's voice is better then ever. She wrote all the songs on this album-a first for her.
Jack White (from THE WHITE STRIPES) gave these songs a sound that wasn't your ordinary Loretta Lynn sound, and perhaps that's another reason why this album won a Grammy.
Even people who are not fond of Country music have been blown away by this album. It is truly a triumph and a treasure!!!!

Free Music Review: Amazing
Hit: 5 Stars

Most of the other reviewers have said it better than I could. This album is a treasure on the cutting edge. Why is it that the very best in life takes a little wear and tear before appreciation kicks in? With new music (and this album is all original new music), if it's great, you have to listen to it 2-4 times before it clicks with you and then you can't stop the music. With movies, I call it the "watchability factor." Great films you can watch a hundred times and find something new or meaningful each time. So it is with Van Lear Rose.

Free Music Review: Loretta Lynn is a Country Legend!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm so glad Loretta Lynn's "Van Lear Rose" won the Grammy for Best Country album last year! I'm glad she also won the Grammy for Best Country collaboration with vocals with Jack White for "Portland Oregon." This album showcases her timeless country voice and her great songwriting. She wrote 12 out of the 13 songs on this album. I LOVE "Miss Being Mrs," "High On A Mountain Top," "Van Lear Rose," "God Makes No Mistakes" and "Women's Prison" (her singing 'Amazing Grace' on it is a real treat as well). It does not get any more real or honest than Loretta Lynn. I'm glad CMT named her the 3rd GREATEST Woman in the History of Country Music, right after the late Patsy Cline and Tammy Wynette respectively. Once again, she delivers with this album and is living proof that age is no barrier when it comes to recording great country music. Hail to the Queen of Traditional Country: Loretta Lynn for the release of this autobiographical album!

Free Music Review: A great record
Hit: 5 Stars

This is an extraordinary record. The pairing of Jack White and Loretta Lynn was a gamble, but it paid off in a big way. Featuring some of the best singing of her career, here Lynn gets some great, rough arrangements courtesy of the White Stripes musician, an obvious fan. It's the opposite of slick, and it works (Nashville take notice)! The whole record is deeply moving and very satisfying. I'm guessing that this will be thought of as a classic in the years ahead.

Free Music Review: Sorry, but its not for me
Hit: 2 Stars

Reading all of the accolades about this album reminds me of the old story about someone who taught a dog to play chess. You're so amazed that the dog can play, you totally miss the fact that he doesn't play very WELL.

That sums up my response to Van Lear Rose. I just listened through the entire disk for the first and ONLY time. Yes, its an odd coupling of White and Lynn, to be sure. But I found very little that I enjoyed actually listening to. "Portland Oregon" is the only track that is very good, IMO. Mostly I just wanted it to be OVER.

Loretta is to be praised for being willing to break out of the mold at her age and career stage. But set aside the "new" (harsh) sound and just listen to the lyrics. What is it, 50 years into her career ? She's still mining the same ground... life was a b*tch in Butcher Holler, but love pulled them through; stories of faithless marriages; being pregnant again; and so on. Sorry Loretta. You've been back to these same subjects too many times to say anything new about them, or to say it in more interesting ways. You've been there and done that-- PLEASE move on !

I agree with another reviewer here that the praise heaped upon this album says more about the sad state of mainstream country music than about the album itself. When Emmylou teamed up with Lanois, when Johnny Cash teamed up with Rubin, the pairings moved long established artists in new, exciting directions. To me, this pairing just tries to mash the same old, tired material through a new mixer. Being new and avante-garde is NOT the same as being GOOD.
