I tend to be skeptical when it comes to musical collaborations between legends and current stars, but this one works, and it works really well. I think the reason why "Van Lear Rose" works so well is that Jack White, as producer and arranger, steers clear of making this a "Jack n' Loretta Sing the Hits" or "The White Stripes: Gone Country!," album. Except for a duet on "Portland, Oregon," Jack's not on it. Not singing, anyway. Jack White's artful influence is strong, for sure, but "Van Lear Rose" is a Loretta Lynn album, through-and-through. As well it should be - she wrote almost every song, my favorite of which is the lonesome widow's lament "Miss Being Mrs." Loretta Lynn was pushing 70 when she recorded that song, but if you didn't know it was her, you could easily think you were listening to a 20-year-old. The quality and emotion of her voice carry a timeless loneliness and sorrow, as well as love and hope, that I think everyone can relate to.

Kudos to Jack White for producing this album and reintroducing us to an American treasure right up there with Johnny Cash and Ray Charles.

Free Music Review: White boy at it again...
Hit: 4 Stars

Loretta Lynn's album " Van Lear Rose " was produced by her friend Jack White of the popular and semi-controversial duo The White Stripes. This is a rough and tumble rockin' little record. Nashville musicians are nowhere to be found, but Lynn says it is just like her first album. She says White recorded her singing in 2-3 takes and it has the feel of singing on the front porch of her home. Yahoo !

Jack wanted Lynn to write all of the 13 songs on the album, reminding Loretta of her longtime legendary country producer Owen Bradley. She said " Jack really thought that it was important for me to write to get the right feel on this CD. " White and Lynn perform a moving duet together called " Portland, Oregon ". Other interesting tunes are the atmospheric almost spoken " Little Red Shoes " and a real foot-stompin' number called " High On A Mountain Top ".

Loretta Lynn was introduced to Jack White when the White Stripes recorded a cover of her song " Rated X " and dedicated an album to her. Eventually the two met, became friendly and Lynn even performed with The Whites in NYC a couple of years back. She said this not-so-strange coupling was destined to happen and give her music a " good kick in the country rear ".

As a producer, Jack White obviously has a lot more to offer than what some perceive as a one-sided talent and just part of a passing fad of retro-garage rockers. His approach to this project couldn't have been more worldly. From dark songs about a woman going to her execution to light-hearted country sing-alongs, this is a really good and raw album...just what we wanted from Loretta Lynn. For those who thought The White Stripes leader was a one trick pony...they don't know Jack! We do all know Loretta, and as usual she's the best in Country!

I was a little worried that Jack White of the White Stripes would somehow corrupt Loretta Lynn's style - but he has masterfully produced this album, adding modern personal touches that add to, not detract from the classic Loretta Lynn sound. Portland, Oregon, Jack White's duet with Loretta Lynn, is by far the most modern, and least-Loretta Lynn song on the album, though still a great track. My favorite songs: "Women's prison" is a haunting song of a deathrow inmate, and "Mrs.Leroy Brown" was a my-husband's-at-the-honkey-tonk-drinking-while-I'm-stuck-at-home-with-the kids classic that had me dancing in the driver's seat of my car in rush hour traffic. "The Story of My Life" is just that - Loretta's autobiography in song form. This is an immensely fun album to listen to and Loretta Lynn is in top form.

Free Music Review: The Real Van Lear Rose!
Hit: 5 Stars

The crtitical acclaim for this album has been phenomenal, just when you thought Loretta had nothing left inside her she comes out with this album. "Van Lear Rose" would satisfy the many fans of Loretta Lynn and people who absolutely hate country music. For me country music just doesn't work, I find it all sounds the same, too themed. However, this collection of work is something different. It sounds unique and fresh, typically Loretta.
At 70 she is producing music better than people half her age, it proves that age is no boundary for wonderful work.

Now if you know anything about rock music you would know that Jack White is one of the great rock producers of all-time, also he is a superb writer. On this album he produces and guests on one track, "Portland Oregon". He doesn't even write, Lynn wrote all the songs herself. This album basically is to do with the whole of Loretta's life and what she experienced right from childhood "Van Lear Rose" to losing her husband "Miss Being Mrs."

All the songs are extremely well crafted from beginning to end.
This really is one of the true classic modern albums. Never have critics gone so crazy over an album since Lauryn Hill's debut. This album sounds like it took years to create, hours of hard work but it must have been well worth the effort. It was also a shame to see her miss out on a few more GRAMMY wins.

My favourite song on this album would have to be "Van Lear Rose" simply because of subject matter and vocal supremacy. That is not to say there aren't other great moments though, "High On A Mountain Top" is song with an upbeat chorus and a relative feeling of being free and "Have Mercy" sees Loretta sing a song with a vivacious romp and strong guitars.

It really is no wonder that this is Loretta's most successfull album ever. It appeals to such a wide range of listeners and has a wonderful array of styles. She may be seventy tough on this album she sounds as vivacious as a 30 year old. Simply stunning work.
