Free Music Notes for Van Lear RoseFree Music Review: Hands down...album of 2004..and likely the decade. Hit: 5 StarsOh.....my........!! Words completely escape me at times when I try to describe this album. That I've bought five copies to give to friends and plan to buy many more should be testament enough that when truly talented people get together, GOOD music can be made.
And GOOD it is, almost terrifyingly good. I haven't heard an album with as much passion, determination, and pure genius since...well, almost forever. I'll stand up right now and say Jack White is a musical genius. How else can he take a music legend, country or not, and get such raw, honest, beautiful music out of her, when most people had written her off as irrelevant in today's music scene? Thank you, Jack, for setting Loretta loose, standing back and watching her go.
And Loretta...well....go she does. I can't say enough about her. Although an admirer of hers for the attitude with which she faced her life's struggles, I'd never really known much of her music. After seeing numerous reviews from such seemingly country-incompatible magazines as Rolling Stone and Blender, I had to check it out for myself, so I bought 'Van Lear Rose' and my jaw just dropped. From the pure country of the title track, to the painfully beautiful 'Miss Being Mrs.', every single song was a winner to me. I'm not a big country fan, either. Most of what's played on the radio today is country-pop/fluff. Almost any singer could be singing it and it would sound the same to me. But not one song on 'Van Lear Rose' could be confused for anyone but Loretta. Whether it's the joyous ode to mountain living of 'High On a Mountain Top' or the scary fun of the cheatin' lover done me wrong 'Mrs. Leroy Brown', each and every song is something to treasure for it's honesty, and for the obvious belief that Loretta has in her music. She sounds completely fresh and new, but completely familiar and comfortable at the same time. Rare is the singer who can do that.
And I believe Jack said it best when he and Loretta accepted the Grammy for Best County Duo with Vocals for 'Portland, Oregon', which is absolutely one of the finest, most majestic songs I've ever heard. He said how Loretta had told him, when they were making the album, that country radio had banned some of her most popular songs, but they went to #1 anyway. "Well, country radio ignored this song, too, and now it's #1" The popular country music crowd of today may not recognize that one of their own icons is still talented almost beyond belief, but they ignore her at their peril. New and old fans alike, real LOVERS of music...whether they are fans of country music or not, will discover that talent, and will be treating themselves to one of the finest albums Loretta has made, and one of the finest albums of the decade. Long live Loretta Lynn!
Free Music Review: Amazing! Hit: 5 StarsNow, I admit that the idea of listening to Loretta Lynn paired with Jack White was not that appealing, at first. Boy, am I EVER glad I took a chance! Jack is now one of my favorite people, too!!! This has got to be the freshest Loretta Lynn album I have heard in forever. The strength has come back to her voice, and her songwriting is as good as it ever has been. I have many favorites on this cd, but my absolute fave is "Van Lear Rose". Each time I listen to it, I can feel the love and adoration Loretta has for both her parents. As a lifetime Loretta fan, I had feared that her career was over, since she recorded so little (and sounded so much weaker) in the 90s. I still bought everything I could get my hands on, but I really didn't expect such a stellar return to the scene. I don't know WHY I didn't, because if Loretta is anything, she's a strong go-getter!!!! Shame on me for not thinking more clearly!
I really enjoy this album, and I would urge people of any musical tastes to pick it up. The sound clips on Amazon are of inferior quality (at the time of this writing, anyway), so please do not judge by that. Listen and feel the joy flood into your heart as Loretta sings the stories of her life. Feel the almost-corny-but-still-wonderful sense of romance from the title track, as you hear about the poor boy who wins the heart of the most sought-after girl in Johnson County. And oh, how he admired his Clary!
This is EXCELLENT!!!!!! Thank you Loretta and Jack for making this album. I was totally thrilled when I read online that the two of them are planning more work together. If it lives up to the quality of this album, we're in for a LOT more of the Coal Miner's Daughter with that adorable Jack White at the helm!
Free Music Review: White is to Lynn as Rubin is to Cash Hit: 5 StarsThis album accomplishes much the same thing the American Recordings did for Johnny Cash in 1994: it introduces a brilliant artist to a generation for whom the legend has eclipsed the meaning of the work which produced it. I knew her story, but now I finally understand why she is so beloved. Her lyrics are raw and tender, beautiful and hard. It is wonderful to discover an artist of this brillance and to know there is a huge body of work for me to explore.
Free Music Review: What a TEAM! Hit: 5 StarsI've always been a Loretta Lynn fan, and recently a White Stripes fan... so imagine my surprise when I saw that Jack White from White Stripes teamed up with Loretta Lynn on Van Lear Rose. This an awesome album, I think Loretta Lynn's best work and as for Jack White, go boy! CMT did a special about the making of this CD and it was really neat to see a younger generation rocker get his opportunity to work with of one his idols in music. From High on a Mountaintop to Portland Oregon and Womens Prison...this CD is worth your ear! I strongly recommend it to all Lynn and White fans everywhere.
Free Music Review: Writes 'em and sings 'em... Hit: 4 StarsProduced by Jack White and backed by his band, this album shows once again that a great Country singer mixes well with a good Rock band (listen to Carlene Carter's Musical Shapes for another example). It is a large part pure Loretta Lynn. All the songs were written by her, an authentic coal miner's daughter. The guitar work is haunting blues rock on "Little Red Shoes", and just rocks on "Have Mercy." Then there are the tracks were those rockers just pick to do Buck Owens proud.
