Free Music Notes for UnglamorousFree Music Review: Lori McKenna - the peoples' poet Hit: 5 StarsI bought this album on the strength of "Bittertown" - my first exposure to Lori's view of the world. I bought it with Mary Chapin Carpenter and Linda Thompson's new albums - all favourites. Well, "Unglamorous" is on my iPod, and accompanied me on my recent 4 month Europe trip, where I had to pare down my musical favourites to the room available. 2000+ of my favourite albums didn't.
This album is not for everyone. My wife, for one, doesn't understand it. But it touches my heart in a way most albums don't. Lori draws us into a world which seems real, as if she has experienced personally most of the themes she discusses. This is the mark of the true poet, like Dylan at his best. This is not someone sitting down and thinking "what is my next song going to be about?"
It goes without saying that the arrangements are well thought out and beautifully accompanied in a folkie/country sort of style (perhaps a little like early MCC albums such as "Stones in the Road").
I don't rate many albums 5 star - perhaps 15 out of all my albums, but this is one. Highly recommended.
Free Music Review: Mixed Feelings Hit: 4 StarsLori McKenna's mixed feelings in her often very strong writing are about men, marriage, and relationships. My mixed feelings about this CD concern whether a polished Nashville sound produced by Tim McGraw is the right showcase for those songs. In the end, I think not for the bright but predictable arrangements more often undercut instead of enhance the emotions of McKenna's writings. Maybe being discovered by country superstars and having your first major label release is a mixed blessing. Still, there are plenty of keepers here including the title track and its unabashed celebration of love on a tight budget; Your Next Lover; the terrific Drinkin' Problem; and Confetti. Her shout out in the liner notes to Mary Gauthier makes me want to check out her earlier work too.
Free Music Review: Very Basic Recording That Emphasizes Lori's Talent Hit: 5 StarsThis CD is recorded with minimal sound--guitar, drums--and it emphasizes Lori McKenna's gutsy and true talent in a solid way that conveys to the listener her heart and passion for music and her art. This woman is very good as a songwriter and singer. She writes of the lives shared by many and does so in a respectful and insightful way. It's an outstanding record and is produced superbly by Tim McGraw.
Free Music Review: Finally! A talented songwriter! Hit: 5 StarsThis album is FANTASTIC! It's so refreshing in a world of lyrics that are completely ridiculous and often complete rubbish to hear someone who is so charmingly honest! Lori McKenna takes everyday life and makes it beautiful. She makes you yearn just to be normal! My favorite tracks are I'm Not Crazy, Unglamorous, and How To Survive, though I admit I love them all. This album has been a staple in my cd player since its release 8 months ago! It's no wonder everyone in Nashville is trying to get Lori's attention, she's fabulous!
Free Music Review: Lori in Nashville Hit: 4 StarsThis is a good album, but while listening to it I can't help thinking that there are too many mainstream Nashville fingerprints all over it. I saw Lori live recently with her regular band and felt that the arrangements when they played were more well-suited to Lori's songs. Perhaps knowing how this album was produced had an influence on me, but in any case, I much rather go back and listen to Lori's excellent and more genuine previous album, Bittertown. Good stuff, though I'd love it if Lori could muster up a few songs with lyrics that are a bit upbeat once in a while.
