Free Music Notes for Lorraine Hunt Lieberson sings Peter Lieberson 'Neruda Songs'Free Music Review: A soulful monument Hit: 5 Stars
I suppsoe one way to describne these songs is that they are of love and fate. Lorraine Hunt sings them magically - full of emotional and vocal force. So heartfelt are the music and singing that I find myself close to tears at times. Added to the impact is simply knowing of her sad fate, which both she and her husband were only too keenly aware of all along. The music is so accessible that I would be surprised if people require many hearings to enjoy it - if 'enjoy' is quite the right word. If you want to be moved by the human heart and the fate it echoes, this is one CD to get.
Only one complaint: the CD is mighty short, not much over 30 minutes or so. But I can't think of what might have been a companion piece unless it had been the Rilke Songs which, however, are already on another CD (also recommended).
Free Music Review: Love story with 6 stars NOT 5 ! Hit: 5 Stars
I will not rehash the fine reviews. All are on the mark when rating this work and this performer as a special talent...with us for far too short a time.
I just saw a performance in Aspen last weekend of Lieberson's Neruda Songs. I am still wiping away the tears for Peter's loss of his late wife, Lorraine Hunt. As a special treat for all, he was in the audience and graciously assisted in the rehersals of Kelly O'Connor's very fine performance of his moving cycle.
If you don't own this CD - buy it now and while you're at it, purchase Handel's Theodora co-starring Hunt Lieberson. You're in for a real treat. Oh, and read about these two love birds online. Bet you cry alittle for this lovestruck couple!
Free Music Review: Another Visit to Heaven Hit: 5 Stars
I first encountered Lorraine Hunt Lieberson at the San Francisco Symphony's performance of Mahler's 2nd, in which her aria stopped time. I found myself quietly weeping, and looking around, I was not alone with teary eyes. The recording of that symphony night does not have the same effect, though it is still wonderful. But on this CD, when I listened to her sing these poetic Spanish songs put to music by her husband, again I am moved to the depths of my very being. Her death was a tragic loss but her sublime vocal powers are preserved here for us to experience. Excellent musical composition, profound poetry, great orchestral performance, heavenly singing: this is musical art at the highest level.
Free Music Review: Brilliant, moving homage Hit: 5 Stars
This is a recording of a live concert - audience noises are essentially absent. Lorraine Hunt Lieberson's performance is transcendent and utterly full-blooded (not oxymoronic). Levine/BSO's playing is so marvellously and naturally molded to her singing. Agreed with the earlier reviewers: This surely is a front runner for definitive orchestral song cycle of the 21st century. It's like Mahler-Zemlinsky-R. Strauss (& a dash of Villa-Lobos) brought together in a Webern-Berg sound world. Any one who fails to be moved by #5 "Amor mio, si muero y tu no mueres" should have their pulse checked!
Free Music Review: Lorraine lives on forever! Hit: 5 Stars
Lorraine Hunt Lieberson's voice has been compared to some of the worlds most prominent female vocalists of all time. Certainly she stands at the pinnacle of my list. Knowing that Lorraine passed away all to soon, I treasure the music she has left for mankind to savor. Her masterful technique and brilliant voice should be heard by all! Peter Lieberson, Lorraine's husband, composed these songs specifically for her. Listen to this recording over and over. Each time you will not want it to end. Thank you Lorraine. Thank you Peter.
