Free Music Notes for Lorraine Hunt Lieberson sings Peter Lieberson 'Neruda Songs'Free Music Review: Love Songs Hit: 5 Stars
I first heard a clip of Lorraine Hunt Lieberson's CD on NPR. Her voice stopped me from attending to other things and drew me to the most haunting music to come out of my radio since Joan Sutherland sang on the Texaco Metropolitan Opera. She sings the poems of Pablo Neruda put to music by her husband, Peter Lieberson, as if this were the last opportunity she would have of telling him how much she loves him. She died shortly after the CD was finished. I only wish she were given the time to sing Shakespeare's sonnets.
Free Music Review: Memorable Hit: 5 Stars
Peter Lieberson' NERUDA SONGS as sung by Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, evoke a melancholy romanticism. The Pablo Neruda poems are subtley playful and deeply romantic. The final song " Amor, Si muero y tu no mueres" ( if I should die and you do not") carries the additional weight of Ms Lieberson illness and subsequent death. This is not morbid stuff, "rueful" is a more accurate discription of this wonderful work; wonderfully performed by the Boston Symphony, conducted by James Levine.
Free Music Review: Elegance and heart Hit: 5 Stars
It is no wonder that this recording received the Grammy award. The artist has such elegant phrasing and vocal beauty that it is not necessary to understand the Spanish language.
The language, however, has been well-served by Mr. Lieberson. He fits the poems and his compositions together with great care. We "see" some of the images of the poetry as we hear the music.
Free Music Review: exquisite Hit: 5 Stars
These songs, based on sonnets by the Puruvian poet Neruda, are ravisihingly beautiful and their beauty is matched by the exquisite performance of Loraine Hunt Lieberson. In light of Ms Lieberson's subsequent death from cancer the performance takes on special meaning. The songs, composed by her husband Peter Lieberson, reflect their great love for one another and are a final farewell.
Free Music Review: A personal comment about its length Hit: 5 Stars
I had the good fortune to be at the performance at Boston Symphony Hall in November 2005 when this CD was recorded. The emotional effect was so intense for both my wife and myself that we did not stay for the rest of the concert--a Mahler symphony no less. Any coupling of this Cd with another work would distract from its emotional effect.
