Free Music Notes for SacredFree Music Review: Lonely No More Hit: 4 Stars
Los Lonely Boys' debut studio album established them as the "wunderkinds" (wunderkinder?) of roots-rock, with a very accomplished combination of Santana-meets-SRV guitar and tight vocal harmonies - and they scored a huge radio hit with "Heaven". On their sophomore studio effort, they seem to be nailing it down to a formula, and their music seems just a bit more "polished". But that also means some of the excitement and fire of the first album seems to be missing. Maybe the novelty has worn off a little, or maybe it's just that the Garza brothers have settled into a comfortable groove. After all, their lyrics aren't going to set the songwriting world on fire, and they'll never be mistaken for a "groundbreaking" band. On the other hand, they are still as deft with the guitar licks and vocals as ever, and there are some tunes here that stand out. "Diamonds", for instance, could join "Heaven" as another big radio hit. The opener, "My Way" (no, not the Ol' Blue Eyes song) is also a passionate rocker. Also worthy of airplay are "Roses", "Texican Style", "Outlaws" (on which they are joined by their dad, as well as their buddy and unofficial mentor, Willie Nelson), and the closing number, "Living My Life", which comes closest to a freewheeling performance indicative of their live sets. (Check out "Live at the Fillmore" for an excellent chronicle of their live performances.) It's hard to argue with success, especially when it's attained through such fine musicianship. So let me put my quibbles aside and recommend this CD. It may seem like more of the same from this band, but that "same" is still pretty damn good blues-rock.
Free Music Review: Good, but not great : ( Hit: 4 Stars
I just feel that Sony/management leaned on LLB to create a more accessible sound. Sacred seems just a little too laidback and polished for my taste. What happened to all the great guitar solos that were all over the first album, not to mention all the cool riffs? The album sounds way too mellow and not rocking enough, there's nothing wrong with making a more mature album, it just sounds as if they sacrificed too much of what made the ST LLB album such a success. I think they tried too hard on this album to force a sound, instead of just letting it happen naturally. There are songs on here with nice depth such as My Loneliness, Orale, and Living My Life. A couple nice groovers in My Way and Oye Mamacita. Diamonds is the 1st single, and has that nice feel good vibe of Heaven. There's a beautiful ballad here in Never Met A Woman with a great Latin vibe to it. Roses, Memories, and Home are finely crafted songs with nice harmonies and melodies. It's a shame when you get to songs like Texican Style, One More Day and Outlaws, you feel like hitting the skip button, these songs are more like B-sides than anything else. It's especially sad when you know that LLB are capable making much superior material. With that being said, I do believe that the Boys created a worthy album that's 99% better than most of the garbage being put out in the mainstream...buy it, check it out...ORALE!
Free Music Review: LLB - Sacred Hit: 4 Stars
Before buying "Sacred", I had some fears that the album would be overly-commercial and might even scream "sellout", given the huge success of their debut. But thankfully it doesn't.
Sacred builds on the group's debut album nicely. The Texican blues/rock/rock en espanol/Stevie Ray Vaughan touches are all still there. There's more instrumentation than the debut, which is a nice addition. The songs are all very catchy - but again, without being too catchy or cheesy. The lyrics and rhyming are somewhat predictable at times, but really, who cares when they sound this good?
I give Los Lonely Boys a lot of respect for writing their own songs, playing their own instruments, and co-producing the album. These guys are very talented musicians. I would definitely recommend Sacred to lovers of "good music".
Free Music Review: Another Great Los Lonely Boys Album Hit: 4 Stars
I'm not sure if this is blues, soul, tex-mex, roots rock or some other style but the name doesn't matter. It's simply good music. The vocals are off the charts good. To say the guitar is special is overlooking how good the rhythm section is. A great band playing good music with both english & spanish lyrics. If you get to see them live... GO! I saw them open up for the Stones and they were great! Buy this album, buy their debut - I can't comment on the others as I don't have them... That's what wish lists are for, right?
Free Music Review: Los Lonely Boys are a fun sound that keeps coming. Hit: 4 Stars
I got interested in the Boys after "How Far Is Heaven" got so popular. That entire album is really great. This title is very good as well. The flavor is not a "up" as the first, but I suppose that fame and fortune does take its toll on everyone in certain ways. The Boys are not multifaceted like Los Lobos (who are sensational). Their music mostly have predictable lyrics and musical rifts, but very catchy. Great party music. Check it out!
