45 songs for [...] is a real gift for someone looking for a definative compilation of music that defined Cuban culture in it's hayday.
This is by far one of the best albums and I am sorry that it took me so long to purchase it after I had seen the movie 10 times. I see a whole new side of Andy Garcia and I appreciate his unbelievable, exquisite taste in music. My 86 year old parents cried when they saw the movie and they rejoiced when they heard The Lost City soundtrack. They knew almost every song and recalled an enchating time when life was good before they were exiled to the United States from Havava (Habana) with no money, no prospects and no language.
The Music on this album has become my absolute favorite. Don't think twice, buy it. I promise you that the music will allow you to understand the feelings and the culture of Cuban people.
Thank you Andy Garcia! This is invaluable to me having left Cuba as a one year old in 1961. I have been gifting the Movie and the CD to members of my family, Cubans friends, elected officials that vote on Cuba policy and my American born friends that need to have an accurate potrayal of who we are. This art that you have created epitimizes the desire and motivation that has helped us continue in an adopted country with the same zest for life and happiness. It is who we are. The Lost City

Andy Garcia directed, starred in and composed the score for this obvious labor of love movie, set in late-'50s Cuba. In his spare time, he also played the piano in the Lost City Orchestra, the de facto house band that performs Garcia's music as well as numbers by the likes of Ernesto Lecuona, widely acknowledged as one of the greatest Cuban composers ever ("A la Antigua," "Danza Lucumi," and "La Comparsa" unfurl glorious string charts). Garcia plays a nightclub owner in Havana right before and during the revolution, thus making music an integral aspect of the movie--no wonder this two-CD set features 45 tracks. In keeping with the movie's period feel, the non-score songs are made up of an array of amazing Cuban dance classics by the likes of Rolando Laserie, inspired player of boleros and guarachas, or mambo master Cachao López (the subject of a documentary directed by Garcia). The latter performs the instrumental version of the gorgeous "Si Me Pudieras Querer," the song that serves as the movie's love theme, while Bola de Nieve handles the vocal one. It was brave of Garcia to juxtapose his own compositions to such numbers, but it's also hard not to think they sound a little bland by comparison. --Elisabeth VincentelliInternational Music CDs
