ingersoll (lead vocals, guitar) said that the band named it the 'red record' because of all the different emotions red connotes: anger, warmth, excitement, love, etc. and that is the purpose of the record. one may consider the name a precursor to the sonic troughs and valleys. the band will take an emotion and ring out the most extremist, pathological, unyielding, enchanting view there is to it without refrain and/or compromise. i think this is rather unique for a band to do. usually when an artist and/or band tries to make an album of discordant ideas and emotions, the result is only a discordant album which may have individual parcels of uniqueness but is not enough to compensate for the lack of cohesion (skunk anansie's "post orgasmic chill" is an example). on 'the red record,' it is precisely that violent variation which leads to a cohesive album because they work within a certain frame (the rampancy of emotions dictated by a simple idea [the color red]).

songs regarding the tautological violence of the world ('estrogen oxygen aches in the teeth again'), the disturbing conception of love to a man who has only known infatuation ('the twisting'), tales of sour love used as behests for revenge ('juillet'), as well as odes to unadulterated negligence of authority ('Rock n' Roll and The Teenage Desperation') seem to be inextricably linked by the same tension and spirit, but marked by the separate intentions. 'the red record' is a wonderful example of the emotional potential a single genre holds and then brags by putting a lot of that potential on one record.
