Free Music Notes for Love Actually

Free Music Review: Beautiful & unique eclectic mix
Hit: 5 Stars

The soundtrack of "Love Actually" is extremely beautiful, uplifting and fun. The film itself is so rich and strange it's hard to pick out favorite moments. But the three onscreen musical performances certainly translate well from screen to CD, and serve the film as the glue that hold the various love stories together.

The first song performed in the film is crazy Bill Nighy's hilarious crusty version of "Love is All Around", the second is Lyndon David Hall's uplifting and soulful rendition of John Lennon's classic "All You Need is Love", and the third is 11 year old Olivia Olson who bursts from the screen at the end of the film--in a "Star Is Born" moment--singing like an angel. (She belts out Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas")

I like the longer remixes on the CD of all three, although the live filmed performances of Bill, Lyndon and Olivia all have a raw, funny, joyful and soulful beauty.

This CD is bursting with the same emotion we get from the film--an absolute love of life. One of my favorite cuts is Eva Cassidy's gut-wrenchingly beautiful version of Christine McVie's "Songbird". (Cassidy died of breast cancer at a young age and the joy and sorrow in her voice is hauntingly beautiful.) Another is Joni Mitchell's incredible smokey-voiced version of a song she wrote as a young girl, now filled with layers of profound meaning sung by her beautifully deep, smokey voice as an adult.

Check it out for Brian Wilson's best song, the exquisite sadness and joy in Eva Cassidy's beautiful voice, and especially to experience the discovery of little Olivia Olson who may well launch from this film into mega-stardom.

My rating on this CD: 5 STARS

Free Music Review: See the movie, love the movie, procure the CD, love the CD
Hit: 5 Stars

Lightning struck again today as we once again stopped on the way home from a movie to pick up the soundtrack album. The first time was for "Freaky Friday," and tonight it was for "Love Actually," the holiday romantic comedy from writer-director Richard Curtis. The main reason of course is because we have to have a copy of Bill Nighy singing "Christmas Is All Around" as his Billy Mack character. You also get Olivia Olson singing the film's first big finale, "All I Want for Christmas Is You." And those are just two of the bonus songs (the third is Otis Redding singing "White Christmas").

All of the key musical moments in the film are represented on the sidetrack, from Lynden David Hall's "All You Need is Love" to the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows." After seeing the film it will be impossible for you to listen to "Jump (For My Love)" by the Pointer Sisters without thinking of Hugh Grant putting on his moves. For those who just like good singing there is Norah Jones doing "Turn Me On" and Eva Cassidy's cover of Christie McVie's "Songbird."

I do have a minor complaint in that Kelly Clarkson's "The Trouble With Love Is" starts off the album the same as it does with her own "Thankful" album, so my mind gets thrown for a loop when the second track is Dido's "Here With Me" instead of "Miss Independent." Fortunately I already have Joni Mitchell's "River," so having "Both Sides Now" instead of that holiday classic on this album is but another minor bump.

Free Music Review: Sisters Point to God
Hit: 5 Stars

The movie, first of all, was a romantic's classic. It explored all aspects of love, from the good the bad...this may actually be one for the permanent DVD collection.

But the soundtrack was equally great. songs from when i was 5 years old to now that i'm 24 were spread throughout. But if no one will comment on this, then i will: Hugh Grant's scene as the Prime Minister when he starts dancing to The Pointer Sisters' "JUMP" is priceless. Especially the ending parts of that scene when he is caught dancing around. Its so funny I think because we all perform around the house, and with sincerity and intention to act and sound like the artist(s) we are mimicking...it was a hilarious scene that I rewound too many times.

Also, at the end of the movie the repetition of "God only knows what i'd be without you" line from the song by The Beach Boys was one of those songs that allows you to drive home to central point of the movie through imagery and sound: while watching all of these forms of love and hearing those lyrics over and over was just a very peaceful feeling to know that, as the movie stated, love actually is all around.

hope this helped someone decide on the movie or the soundtrack...i say go for both.
thanks

Free Music Review: Actually Love This Soundtrack
Hit: 5 Stars

This soundtrack is well worth the money. You don't even need to have liked-or for that matter seen-the movie to appreciate it.

I have new appreciation for Kelly Clarkson after hearing her version of "The Trouble With Love Is." She really does have a great voice. I had dismissed her as a gimmick because of American Idol.

I also renewed my appreciation for the Beach Boys "God Only Knows." To hear it on a track away from their other beach songs made me realize its haunting quality.

Joni Mitchell's cover of her classic hit "Both Sides Now" makes you ache. When I saw the movie, I was near tears when it played under a very emotional scene with Emma Thompson. When I heard it minus the visual cue, I teared up again-it's that heartbreaking.

Finally, two of the most fun tracks come at the end: "Billy Mack's" hilarious Christmas tune and a very catchy jingle by the young OLivia Olson "All I want for Christmas is You." The Olson tune is playing under the commercials for the movie right now: perfect commercial music as it stays in your head.

Good movie, great soundtrack

Free Music Review: Best Soundtrack EVER
Hit: 5 Stars

What an absolutely breathtaking soundtrack for an absolutely wondrerful movie.

There is not a single track you will want to skip!

How ironic it is, that I would have to rate the songs on the CD almost in the order they appear on the soundtrack (with the exception of moving Dido's song down a couple of notches along with the Norah Jones song)

The Kelly Clarkson Song, Maroon5 song, and Wyclef Jean songs are all outstanding tracks on a totally awesome album.

The Trouble With Love Is will have you wistfully remembering your many favorite scenes from the movie as well as touching your heart. You'll find yourself unable to not sing along.

Sweetest Goodbye/Sunday morning shows a totally other side of Maroon5 then what you are familiar with on radio. It will have you moving in your seat and again, singing along.

Take me as I am is just a totally fun raggae type song that just fits the movie so well.

Where you don't have to see this movie to enjoy the soundtrack, It certainly does heighten the listening pleasure.

See the movie, buy the soundtrack! Both are a must have experience!
