Free Music Notes for Love Is the Song We Sing: San Francisco Nuggets 1965-1970Free Music Review: essential Hit: 5 Stars
This package is a winner. There were a few songs on the set that were familiar to me such as those done by Big Brother, the Dead, and Quicksilver. But more important are the totally obscure. Listen to My Buddy Sin by the Stained Glass or Coffee Cup by the Wildflower just to name two, and see if you don't get a chill up your spine. The hardcover book that packages the disc is something else. Beautiful pictures and thoughtful comments on each track enhance the experience. I was a teenager in the 60's on the East Coast so most of these groups were unfamiliar to me. Sort of melancholy that most of them never really saw the light of day; but somehow maybe even more precious. Now if Rhino could do a similar number with the East Coast 60's scene. Maybe start off with the Blues Project, Vagrants and..?
Free Music Review: Excellent 60's music and reminiscence from San Francisco Hit: 5 Stars
This is a great book with outstanding pictures of the people and places in San Francisco California in the late 1960's and early 70's. I had never seen most of those pictures, including the scanned posters and tickets, fantastic! The author discusses the music scene from his eyes as well as from quotes from musicians and people of influence from that time and place. It's cool to listen to the hard to find music and go through the book, it really puts you there, in the scene.
The book is well written, nothing is held back, while the photographs have you lamenting a time gone past. The book can even be considered a tribute to those that were there and those of us that only heard about it, but wished they had "saved up the bread" to get there.
Free Music Review: The Best !! Hit: 5 Stars
Prehaps the best cd collection that RHINO has ever put together.Notice I said cd set not 'boxed set ' as this collection is housed in a magnificent book configuration that is almost worth the price on it's on. I cant think of a better set to introduce one to the SF scene than this. But to tell the truth ( and i'm not knocking it here) it's kindve a giant sampler for UK ACE/BIG BEAT NUGGETS FROM THE GOLDEN STATE series. If you like this sets you need to buy these cd's too . If your like me and have most of the BIG BEAT cd's there's still enough obscure ditties to warrant buying this set. Not sure if the sound quality is any better or aout the same but it's real good. This is a must have .
Free Music Review: An Amazing Compilation!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Beautifully packaged and meticulously researched this compilation of San Francisco's contribution to rock and roll is a must have for anyone interested in the evolution of rock music. A few extremely well known tunes interspersed with dozens of astonishing and incredibly beautiful and fantastic rare gems elevate this collection to a whole new level in that it opened doors for me to further musical explorations of some of the pivotal recording artists of the 1967-70 San Francisco music scene. In short, buy this record if you have any interest at all in learning about one of the most important the defining sounds of rock that is felt to this very day.
Free Music Review: Rhino Captures Another Era and Time Hit: 5 Stars
Rhino Records does it again. This 4 C.D. box set captures the San Fransisco, West Coast Sound of the mid to late sixties. If you lived in the Bay Area at that time, I highly recommend this box set. I was living in Hawaii at the time and i remember a lot of these tunes, which i haven't heard since that time. I feel that they could have added another disc of the really commercial stuff that we are all familiar with, but i guess with licensing problems and such. The folks who will appreciate this set the most will be the baby boomers. You know the sole suvivors of that great time in music.
