Free Music Review: Love: Reincarnated
Hit: 5 Stars

After having loved their debut, Da Capo, and Forever Changes I was a little skeptical when I first popped Foursail into my cd player. How could Arthur Lee possibly reform Love after coming off of an album that many consider one of rock 'n' roll's greatest? After listening to Foursail, I realize that the acoustic symphonies of Forever Changes are long gone, but replaced by a much more powerful, dynamic rock sound, reminiscent of Cream and Zeppelin at times. In strong contrast with Forever Changes, which was Arthur Lee's death letter to the world, Foursail abandons the longer lyrical patterns for shorter, yet equally witty lyrics. Jay Donnallen shines on lead guitar; every solo just booms with intensity and originality, which almost makes you forget the abscense of Johnny Echols. Still present are the complex rhythm changes that Arthur Lee loves so much, and shows that he can still execute to perfection. While Foursail is not the masterpiece that Forever Changes was, and not as experimental as Da Capo, there is still something to be said for just putting out an exceptionally "cool" album. The track listing does not contain anything of the magnitude of "You Set the Scene" (which I personally consider one of the greatest songs in rock n roll), yet songs like "August", "Robert Montgomery", and "Singing Cowboy" boast excellent guitar riffs, and lyrics that you just can't help but sing along to. "Good Times" is another song off of the album that really just stuck with me. Although the band is different, songs such as "Neil's Song" and "Dream" remind us that Arthur Lee is still at the helm, which means the lyrics are dark and mysterious, despite the campy, sing-songy feeling evoked by "Neil's Song". To cap off the album, Lee ends with "Always See Your Face", a beautiful song that blends the horn sounds of Forever Changes with his newer rock sound characteristic of the rest of the album. Foursail is not the experimental delight that Da Capo was, nor the everlasting classic that Forever Changes is. Keeping this in mind, Foursail is an essential for any Love fan, or any fan of late 60's acid rock. Lee still proves that he is more than just another psychedelic rock band with Foursail, putting his newly-formed band on the top of the rock pedestal of 1969. This album has been unfairly forgotten, and deserves (in my opinion)to earn recognition in the top 50 or so rock albums. Please explore this album and other works by Love so we can all experience the musical genius that was and still is Arthur Lee.

Do you think we could get just one Love review on here that doesn't mention or compare the album in question to THAT Love album. We all know how good it is, how it's now a canonized album you see in those smug rock-bore "best albums of.." lists and how it unfairly overshadows the rest of the Love albums. Enough already.

Me, i'm a fan of all the Love albums on Elektra and grew up on them as my father is a big fan but "four sail" is the one i find myself listening to the most these days. I can see why the Love purists and the fans of THAT album don't like this and find it a crude return to the raw rock of the debut on songs like "my flash on you" and "revelation" from "da capo" (a song which polarizes opinion in Love fans) but, with all due respect, they're all deaf 50 year old decrepit freaks with poor taste because this album absolutely rocks like a mutha.

Arthur Lee stopped using an orchestra and scrapped the Ennio Morricone-ish arrangements and went back to his blues roots, both musically and lyrically, on here with his new band members after he fired Brian Maclean and the original Love line-up. Lee's songs still retain their strong Byrds-influenced melodies but Jay Donnellan's wah-wah guitaring on here is so raw and stripped down. Hendrix was an obvious influnce and reference point but when Donnellan cuts loose i think he's more comprable to Ron Asheton on the Stooges debut which was also released in 1969 on Elektra. The only weak track is "your friend and mine" which is kinda corny and obviously Beatles-ey but still retains a certain charm.

As with all the remastered Love reissues the sound quality is superlative and the c.d booklet is just as good containing an in depth interview with Lee, the band and analysis of each song with excellent pictures of the band. The one of Arthur and his dog, in particular, is a gem.

Free Music Review: This is a SOLID five stars album that ROCKS!!!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

So this is supposed to be "A DISAPPOINTING ALBUM"??? That Arthur Lee "lost it" after making "Forever Changes"??? Don't even bother to listen to ANYONE saying that. They are missing out, and are quite simply DEAD WRONG!!!!!
For one year I have owned this album, I listen to it very frequently, and words can never describe how good it is to me and how much I LOVE and ADORE this fantastic album!
There isn't a single weak moment here, so this album ranks right up with the greatest albums ever made. To follow up the wonderful, majestic "Forever Changes" with an album that ROCKS so much more, how brilliantly wise and brave that is, it adds to Arthur's genius for sure!
I can't see any reason why this album shouldn't deserve a solid 5 stars, except from the fact that it is not quite as great as "Forever Changes". But then, that goes for ANY album by ANY other artist as well! So this makes "Four Sail" a solid 5 star album, in my book, that is.

Free Music Review: Best Love Album
Hit: 5 Stars

This was the first Love album I ever purchased. Intrigued by their history, I never bought any of their earlier albums because there always seemed to be something else I wanted more. I finally broke down and bought this and was not disappointed. Eventually I bought all the earlier albums but they did not hold a candle to this one. Every song is great. They range from heavy to jazzy to just plain different. My favorites are August and Singing Cowboy. I've never heard the two albums after this one that were made by this same version of Love (mostly) so have no idea if they managed to keep the momentum going (I heard not). For a group that seemed to fight like cats and dogs (especially Arthur Lee and George Suranovich), they put together a very good performance. I tend to favor Johnny Echols, Love's original guitarist, but Jay Donellan really struts his stuff here and I highly recommend this one over Forever Changes.

okay, you can throw as much rotten fruit at me as you want. i never have been a fan of forever changes. i've listened to it many times over the years, and find foursail far, far superior. musically and lyrically, the cd is solid. the extra tracks are welcome and the booklet very informative. august, robert montgomery, singing cowboy are some of the standout tracks. i think the band is tight and they rock, especially on the august track. i don't know why it took so long for this to come out, but i'm delighted it did. i believe foursail is very underrated and for some reason, the critics have not been kind. i don't know why. foursail and their next release out there are classics of loves. hope ya all enjoy it.
