Free Music Review: A bold little musical

"Loving Repeating: A Musical of Gertrude Stein" is an interesting little musical by Stephen Flaherty, Tony Award-winning composer of the epic "Ragtime" and other notable modern musicals ("Dessa Rose," "Once on This Island"). All of his shows, this one included, share the commonality of containing some of the most hummable theater music around. Anybody who likes their musicals instantly catchy need only to throw on any Flaherty cast recording. Normally, Flaherty works with the skillful lyricist Lynn Ahrens, but here he's working in an unusual mode: in creating a biography of sorts of the writer and feminist Gertrude Stein, his songs contain lyrics taken from Stein's own writings, which feature a repetition of phrases and wordplay she was known for (example lyric: THERE ARE MANY THAT I KNOW/ AND THEY KNOW IT/ THEY 'RE ALL OF THEM REPEATING/ AND I HEAR IT. / MORE AND MORE I UNDERSTAND IT. / I LOVE IT AND I TELL IT. / I LOVE IT AND ALWAYS I WILL TELL IT.). One drawback to the recording is that the lyrics are not always easy to digest-- they can be exhausting to take in all at once (and they're also, perhaps, a bit too stiflingly "intellectual"). In addition to the songs, there are also spoken monologues by Stein (Cindy Gold, very good) narrating episodes of her life. Whether you find the lyrics and narrative structure fascinating or tedious might not matter entirely; Flaherty's music is melodic and engaging, and worth the price of the cd. With its changing musical styles and deceased literary figure as lyricist, "Loving Repeating" actually recalled for me "Cats," with Andrew Lloyd Webber's own catchy and eclectic music set to poems by Stein's contemporary, T.S. Eliot. Of course "Cats" didn't feature a lesbian love story! Overall, this is a unique and really sort of daring offering from one of musical theater's most reliable composers.
