Free Music Notes for MameFree Music Review: Good Collectable, but Not Much Else Hit: 3 Stars
Okay, so we all know that Lucille Ball as Mame was panned by critics left and right. We all know that she was too old for the role, that she couldn't sing very well, and so on and so forth. But darn it, I just had to have this CD for some reason. And I listen to it still too! Jerry Herman is the reason why. His songs, though arranged much differently than the Broadway score, still shine through through Ball's low voice. Robert Preston is in fine form, singing "Loving You," a song written especially for the movie. This CD is really not all that different from the original Warner Brothers' Soundtrack LP in terms of quality. But there is interesting infromation in the CD booklet about the movie. So, if you want to hear Lucy in her last film, buy it. If you want to just listen to the music form Mame, then get the Broadway cast.
Free Music Review: Judy Garland Please! Hit: 3 Stars
It was said that if Judy Garland had lived the role would have been hers - if you could gotten her on the set every day. But there was no doubt that she would have been the perfect age for the part and that her voice even while she was struggling in the late 60's would have been anything but better than Lucy's. If only....
Free Music Review: Bad Casting/Poor recording Hit: 2 Stars
The soundtrack to jerry Herman's Mame with Lucille Ball, Bea Arthur and Robert Preston is a recording for hard core Mame Fans only, and even they have to bite down hard to make it pallatable. Primarily due to the exceedingly poor soundtrack quality, this soundtrack is one of the poorest recordings I have ever heard! Lucille Ball is totally miscast as Mame, although she try's very hard. Beatrice Arthur is wonderful as on the B'way cast album w/ Angela Landsburry. Robert Preston is the one presence I actually had to have the disc for. I may copy them to another disc, so I don't have to put up with the rest of this dreadful recording, so full of noise you're looking for the noise reduction button!!!Not for the timid!
Free Music Review: I LOVE LUCY BUT NOT IN THIS! Hit: 2 Stars
I've been a huge fan of Lucille Ball for years but she just isn't Mame or Auntie Mame for that matter! It's not just that she was too old for the part or lacked a singing voice, she was terribly miscast, plain and simple!
If Angela Lansbury had played the part and Lucy had taken a "Guest Star" role as Vera Charles, this might have been a classic!
The score, with a couple of exceptions, is mainly ho hum, so I suggest as others have, get the Broadway Cast CD!
Free Music Review: Dismal !!! Hit: 1 Stars
Jack Warner and Warner Bros. had a history of ruining Broadway musicals with poor casting choices in transfering them to film. The list includes My Fair Lady (ignoring Julie Andrews for the non-singing Audrey Hepburn, though it's a terrific film, with Andrews it would have reached cinema perfection!), Roz Russell in place of Merman in Gypsy, Vanessa Redgrave and Franco Nero in Camelot, the entire cast of Paint Your Wagon, among others. Lucy in Mame was the worst mistake! Period. She was far too old, could not sing it, and didn't have the joi de vie that Mame must have. While it was a fairly faithful re-creation of the broadway show, thanks to Lucy it seems to just plod along. Only when Bea Arthur is around (or occasionally Jane Connell re-creating her role as Gooch) does it perk up. However, those scenes are too few and far between to keep the film compelling. And most of the score was retained and kept intact ( despite Lucy's harsh non-voice), there was a gorgeous addition in the song Loving You, written for the film and smartly given to Robert Preston. It's absolutely beautiful, though it does slow the movie down even more than it already is.
Perhaps someday there will be a full scale Broadway revival with a competent, appealing star, and filmed for PBS and televised. Too much to hope for I guess!
