Free Music Notes for Little HoneyFree Music Review: Scattered Threads Hit: 4 Stars
Wow, can't believe the negative reviews this got. I'm a casual fan owing three of her albums, so I had nothing to loose when I heard this, and I loved it from the get go: stir up some: Hank, Earle, Mazzy Star and Dusty in a stew and add a touch of Casandra Wilson for Soul and you've got LW. Sure her voice sounds a bit calculatingly affected at times, but let me tell you she does heartache real good, as we've heard before, so now we get an eclectic mix of other songs that tap other possibilities. Love the raw feel; guitar work is tasty good reminding me of Neil Young with Crazy Horse at times. A bit of tasteful Mephis-style horn work here and there. Her duet with Elvis Costello is the best Honky-Tonk he's ever done (believe me I tried one of his "country" records). Her frankness may be an acquired taste. There's a shock and awe quality to some of the songs, and some are a bit repetitive (maybe on purpose) such as on "knowing," which has a zen-like word play going on, but overall this is an engaging work and I don't believe it's fair to hold it up to the sacred cows of the past
Free Music Review: Sweet (& Sour) Lu Hit: 4 Stars
Seeing and hearing Lucinda and her band perform live last year was my favorite concert experience of the whole year. Some of that live spontaneity and excitement comes across in her new recording, although it isn't quite as grand as her last album, West. I'm not complaining too much, though - it used to be so long between Lu albums, and now this one comes pretty soon after West. The new songs blend blues, country, gospel, and rock influences easily, into a typically gripping, hard-boiled LW concoction. Although Ms Williams is often lumped into the "alt country" category, she sure rocks out on songs such as "Real Love" and "Honey Bee." The band is fantastic throughout the recording -- I especially dug Chet Lyster's guitar work. The only thing that stops me from giving Little Honey a top rating is that a couple of tunes left me a little cold, like the somewhat lackluster "If Wishes Were Horses." But that song is immediately followed by a fun duet with Elvis Costello (who seems to be everywhere these days) on "Jailhouse Tears." So overall, I like the new Lu a lot!
Free Music Review: Some Rockabilly, but still a lot of Soul........ Hit: 4 Stars
The first three tracks are upbeat and snappy, unlike a lot of Lucinda's earlier works (although Track 2 was apparently written for an album more than 10 years ago!)Then she settles down for a few classic Lucinda type songs (moody & mellow but always a joy to hear)until Mr Costello appears on Track #8. I must admit that I am a HUGE Elvis fan and that his "Monkey Man" album from a few years ago is what turned me on to Lucinda. When I heard her duet with him on that album, I decided to find who she was and I've been a fan of hers ever since. As for "Jailhouse Tears", it's catchy and cute, including their use of four letters words, but unfortunately is a dissappointment after less than a dozen listens. This track that should have been a highlight for me, being a big fan of both performers, actually is this biggest dud on the album. However, this is a terrific album overall and I won't be looking for a refund and I don't think you will either.
Free Music Review: Lucinda with special guest artists: Elvis Costello, Charlie Lovin, Susanna Hoffs (of the Bangles) & others. Hit: 4 Stars
This is a very good Cd by Lucinda, as other reviewers have pointed out, this CD is much more "upbeat", than her previous album cd "West". This cd features Lucinda's new band Buick 6, along with several guest artists. Some highlights include "Real Love", "Tears of Joy", "Little Rock Star" (this is about Amy Winehouse), "Honey Bee", "Jailhouse Tears" (this is a duet with Elvis Costello, Lucinda & Elvis perform great duets together), and a great Lucinda style cover of the ACDC classic, "It's a Long Way To The Top" (When you want to Rock & Roll). I really love her take on that song, it's one of my favorite songs. It's even my motto, in my profile. This is a good classic Lucinda album CD. I think any fan of "alternative" country, or "Country Rock", would really enjoy this one. I know I do. Thanks!!!
Free Music Review: A rough n tumble batch of barroom stompers and ballads - love it Hit: 4 Stars
For now, gone are the days of Lucinda's acoustic, folk/country music. Here, soak in a bluesy, rootsy bar-band taking over the local saloon, tunes altering between roadhouse stomps with telecasters blaring, and smokey, hushed ballads, guitars drenched in reverb. Williams almost breathes her words, lazily, almost drunkenly carefree, drawling and infectious. The duet with Elvis Costello on "Jailhouse Tears" is a riot. So much great music she has made.... GENRES: Rock, Alt Country, Mellow Rock.
BUY IF YOU LIKE: The Jayhawks, James McMurtry, John Hiatt.
MUST HEAR TRACKS: "Real Love," "If Wishes Were Horses," "Jailhouse Tears," "It's a Long Way to the Top."
