Free Music Notes for Sweet Old WorldFree Music Review: More complex than first meets the ear Hit: 5 StarsI'd like to take issue with the reviewer who said that "He Never Got Enough Love" is lesser than some of the other perfect gems on this album -- the song is arranged in a perfect statement and response format, with the lyrics giving stark details of the life behind the tragedy, and the chorus acting as a sort of Greek chorus of the neighbors, giving their simplistic explanations, which explain nothing, and everything. It appears simple...but it isn't. She didn't grow up with a poet for nothing!
Free Music Review: Not Her Best but Still Wonderful Hit: 5 StarsWhile some of the songwriting is not quite up to the standard of the masterpieces that preceded and followed it, this CD is still a wonderful recording. The title track is possibly Lucinda's loveliest and most touching song and worth the price of the disc all by itself. There are plenty of other great songs here, and everything is beautifully sung.

Free Music Review: A slice of life? This is the whole dammed pie! Hit: 5 StarsI bought this CD on impulse the other day as I had not heard of Lucinda Williams and I mistakenly thought I knew a little bit about music. She has the most honest voice of any singer in my memory and "Pineola" is the most powerful song I have heard since "Billy Joe McCallister jumped off the Tallahachee Bridge". You will find yourself listening very carefully so you don't miss anything."Six Blocks Away" is my second favorite on this CD but they all are pure gold and this is now my favorite Lucinda Williams CD of the four others I had to go and buy after listening to this one.
Free Music Review: Lucinda at her best! Hit: 5 StarsEveryone who only heard Lucinda for the first time with Car Wheels on a Gravel Road ain't heard nothin' yet! Lucinda has been an amazing musical genius since well before her break out record (which I personally think was her weakest record to date - including her brand new album Essence - which has gotten lame reviews in comparison to its predecessor but is, in my opinion a better album). Listening to Sweet Old World is almost like listening to a musical. The songs are so filled with meaning and feeling and solid story lines it is hard not to draw a common thread through all of them and assume they all come from the same pain (which according to an interview with Lucinda - they do not). This Lucinda Williams album is still second to her self titled work but good enough to stand alone. It's amazing and will always be somewhere playing in the soundtrack of my life!
