Free Music Notes for West AlbumFree Music Review: Homage to Momma , Goodbye Lover A Full Circle Metamorphosis Hit: 5 StarsThere is a campaign underway for the reviewer following me- neggies for me poszzies for this person- just watch. Reported to Amazon.
Lucinda Williams says of her new CD'West'-" I get tired of people looking at my songs and feeling that they're all sad and dank. There's more to them than that. Some people might read Flannery O'Connor and see it as simply dark and it is dark and disturbing, but there's a philosophical aspect, even a comical aspect to it as well. I think that's all there on this album. It's a full circle, like I've come through a metamorphosis."
This CD is about coping with a painful breakup and the death of Lucinda's mother. She sings about her mother in her songs, 'Everything Has Changed' and 'Learning to Live'. Lucinda Williams tells us that it is a painful time, but it has been her most prolific time as a writer. There is pain but there is also a look at the future. 'Come on" and 'What If' are looking back and forward. 'What If' looks forward to a President who wears pink- is Lucinda a Hilary Clinton fan? 'Come On' gives someone a kiss off and in a not so nice tone- good on yer, Lucinda. Some might look at this CD as dark and brooding, but I find it tells us a story. A story of pain and suffering as she says, but she is also growing and telling us that there is hope, and we just need to get through the dark times. This is homage to Momma and a good-bye to the lover. The opening song 'Are You Alright' is one of her best and is a catchy tune with words we can all recite. "Are you alright, is there someone to hold you tonight?" This will be the song we remember, this is the Lucinda Williams we all know.
"Williams remains a premier artist. But on another keeper here, she worries, "When my words are hiding between the lines/Then I'm afraid they won't hear me call." It must be said in so many words that does happen sometimes -- and that the music doesn't always bail her out. "ROBERT CHRISTGAU
'West' is one of Lucinda Williams most meaningful CD's. It may not contain her best music, but it is pretty close. I find it has the guitar textures that are part of her best work and the lyrics tell us exactly how she feels. Highly Recommended. prisrob 2-13-07
