Free Music Notes for Lucy Pearl

Free Music Review: The perfect name, the perfect singer, what could go wrong?
Hit: 3 Stars

A few nights ago, I was paging through my CD booklet, wondering what to pop in my ADD diseased cd player. Punk rock? nah, 3 chords get pretty boring after a while. Hardcore? nah, the screaming's starting to erode my eardrums. Garage rock? nah, the low-fi's really scraping my nerves off. But then the light bulb came on.

I remembered the brief period in my life that I became obsessed with all things hip-hop/R&B. One group instantly popped into my head with the remembrance of that era. Lucy Pearl. I pulled out the colorful CD and its lyrics, popped the cd in, and took a trip back in time.

I bought this cd in October of either 2000 or 2001, soon after I heard their single Dance Tonight. I spent the entire weekend on vacation with my family in Santa Fe, watching the Equestrian Olympics on tv while listening to this cd non-stop. That was one of the best vacations I've had.

Lucy Pearl does not break any new ground on this cd, it does not change your life or make your jaw drop. But it delivers good, smooth, thick and strong music. It's like any CD should be, flawed but fundamentally listenable. Even today, as my main staples are driving rock tracks, Lucy Pearl is a nice break and a step into the land of coherent listening. The best songs include Lucy Pearl's Way, Trippin, La La La (at least the beginning, the song begins to trail off after a while) Dance Tonight, Don't Mess With My Man and Hollywood.

For the Hip-hop/R&B enthusaists, I'm sure they'll thoroughly enjoy this cd and will benefit from having this cd in their collection. Even those who don't enjoy that specific genre that much might enjoy this collaboration album, but a few sample listens might be needed to ensure that decision.

Free Music Review: Good Mixture of Songs
Hit: 4 Stars

I was very impressed with the songs compiled on Lucy Pearl's self-titled debut album. I found myself getting pulled in to almost every single one of the groups songs. The songs move from love to loss to anger very smoothly. There is even some humor mixed in. I really enjoy listening to this album. It gives me something different and interesting to listen to when I get tired of the same old songs they play on the radio.

Stand-out tracks:
"Dance Tonight"
"Without You"
"Don't Mess With My Man"

Free Music Review: Raphael's first "solo" album
Hit: 4 Stars

Although this group is called Lucy Pearl (and with Raphael Saadiq's ego, I'm not surprised the group didn't last), their self-titled album is more or less Raphael Saadiq's time to shine. Exec-produced by Saadiq himself, you hear him in every song, no matter if it's singing, producing, playing instruments, or all of the above.

But it's not like it's bad. Some great songs come out of those moments: if you can bypass the filler (i.e., "Hollywood"), you will fall in love with "Without You", his solo joint and thinking back to the good-ol-days on "Remember the Times". "Dance Tonight" will have you doing just that while "Can't Stand Your Mother" may have you rolling on the floor laughing. The other members, Ali Shaheed Muhammad (from ATCQ) and Dawn Robinson (from En Vogue), also do a good job at mixing and singing, respectively (see "Good Love").

If anything's wrong with the album, it's that some of the songs are too short, meaning that they end at the wrong place, like "Remember the Times", "They Can't", and "Trippin'". Still, this was a great first, and last, effort from these three members. And isn't it funny how all three members from former groups got together and soon broke up themselves?

Free Music Review: COMPLETELY UNDERRATED R&B ALBUM- this is a must have!!...
Hit: 5 Stars

The MUSICAL chemistry of this group, the lyrics, the melodies all unparalled. Their break-up is a step BACKWARDS for the music world and listening audience. I saw them live and they delivered!!...This group was better, more mature and sophisticated than any of the respective groups whence they originated (TTT was GOOD! But Raf hogged the limelight)! Lucy Pearl is a GREAT album. I am VERY VERY VERY Picky!

This album is in constant rotation, and will never go out of style...
