Free Music Review: It Ended Before it Even Began...
Hit: 5 Stars

Shortly after the debut album from supergroup Lucy Pearl (featuring members from Tony Toni Tone, En Vogue, and Tribe Called Quest), the trio disbanded when Dawn Robinson bowed out to pursue yet another solo project. That's a shame, because this album is a result of the best of THREE worlds: the hip hop vibes of Ali Shaheed Muhammad, the unfiltered funk of Raphael Saddiq, and the firery pipes of Dawn Robinson. Together, they created a promising debut album that points to the future of r&b. We have the slammin' single "Dance Tonight," the funny "Can't Stand Your Mother," and the stern warning "Don't Mess With My Man." Unlike most groups, where one star overshadows everyone else (Beyonce?), "Lucy Pearl" gives each member equal opportunity to shine. And at 55 minutes in length, it never wears out its welcome. This was one of the most hotly anticipated releases in the r&b scene, and it unquestionably lives up to its hype.

Free Music Review: R&B, with instruments no less...
Hit: 4 Stars

This is the R&B i love... the kind that has actual instruments being played, with live vocals... it suprises me that more bands don't make this classic sound. Even with the usual bling bling track "Dance Tonite", this album defies all the typical hip hop rules and makes you sit up and take notice. Best Songs-Don't Mess With My Man and Can't Stand Your Mother. Buy it if you're sick of canned beats, bad samples, and crap feature artists. This cd is the real deal...

Free Music Review: GOOD, BUT....
Hit: 3 Stars

i like lucy pearls album, its got some fun, catchy tunes. but the problem is the LENGTH of the songs!! too many good songs fall short of even THREE minutes, most barely make over that mark.

am i being picky? songs need to be longer than this. it just seems too much like a demo, not a serious attempt at a real album. hopefully they will rectify this next time.

Free Music Review: Hot Album!
Hit: 5 Stars

Doing for soul what bands like Crosby, Stills & Nash and Cream did for rock & roll, Lucy Pearl is a supergroup culling personnel from different corners of the rap and contemporary R&B world. The brainchild of Tony Toni Tone's Raphael Saddiq, the band is rounded out by Ali Shaheed Muhammad of hip-hop innovators A Tribe Called Quest, and former En Vogue vocalist Dawn Robinson. Lucy Pearl fits squarely into the '90s nouveau soul movement that countsD'Angelo (replaced in Lucy Pearl by Robinson following schedule conflicts) and Lauryn Hill as members. This trio infuses its debut with plenty of rolling beats, funky licks and crackling rhythms.

The vocal ying and yang Saddiq and Robinson provides throughout these 15 tracks is particularly apparent on numbers like the harmonically rich "Trippin'," and the buttery smooth "Dance Tonight." DJ Ali's programming skills also come to the fore on the thumping "They Can't," and the bouncy "Don't Mess With My Man," featuring Dawn Robinson tearing a vocal hole through the roof. Other highlights include the lyrical trade-off between Snoop Dogg and Muhammad's former Quest running partner Q-Tip on the head-bobbing "You," and the rock guitar-laden "Hollywood," a stylistic cousin to En Vogue's "Free Your Mind."

Free Music Review: Fresh
Hit: 4 Stars

Once a fan of En Vogue and the unique production of Raphael Saadiq ,I decided to buy this album, and I liked it a lot. The beats are very original and the album is far superior than most r&b albums released in 2000.

1. Lucy Pearl's Ways - good, smoothy intro that mixes well the 3 elements of the group. B-

2. Trippin'- good hook, but the whole song is kind of strange. C- 3. Dance Tonight - The most famous single, very cool song, but still, there's something missing here. B+

4. Lala [Untitled] - Good production here, but silly lyrics. B+

5. Everyday - Another good song that makes you feel good, I like the production. One of my favorites of the album. A-

6. Can't Stand Your Mother - I like the basis, and the bridge but the chorus and the verses I don't it like at all. D+

7. Good Love - Nice song about love B-

8. Without You - I like this song. B+ 9. Don't Mess With My Man - I like the production here, this was the second single. It sounds early 80's and it's only Dawn singing. Another good song. B+

10. Hollywood - My favorite track on the album. The rock element works really weel here, and Dawn is great, very criative song. People should mix R&b with rock more. A+

11. Remember the Times - Nostalgic song, very good. B+

12. They Can't - another favorite, the lyrics and music are great. A-

13. Do It for the People - A bit repetitive, but still criative. C+

14. You - This is the third single, featuring Snoop Dogg and Qtip, also on the soundtrack Save the last dance. Another good song. B+

15. Lucy Pearl Tells - I like the idea of the marching band, but the conversation wasn't necessary. A-

Hidden Track - Lala remix - not very different from original. B-

Total Rating B+ (4 stars)
