Free Music Notes for Lucy PearlFree Music Review: Creativity At It's Best Hit: 5 StarsWOW !! Treat Yourself. Funky, Quality, Creative, Definitely not poured in a MOLD. One of a Kind. I like that - It's Ear Candy and should have received more attention. Great mixture of Talents.
Free Music Review: Debut of a Powerful New Group Hit: 5 StarsI was so mesmerized by the video to "Don't Mess With My Man" that I had to find out who this "Lucy Pearl" person was. To my amazement, I discovered that it is composed of members of three of the 90's most unique vocal groups: En Vogue, Tony! Toni! Tone!, and A Tribe Called Quest. Like the earlier reviewer, this group has nowhere to go but UP with this fantastic first effort. No filler here, just down-home, rough and dirty, "funkdified" rhythmic hip-hop. Outstanding cuts include the aforementioned plus "Trippin'," "Dance Tonight," "Everyday," "Can't Stand Your Mother" (which won't win the band any "motherly" fans), "Good Love," and the rocking "Hollywood." The only "empty spot" comes in the last track "Lucy Pearl Tells" which features the Alabama A & M Marching Band in one "tight" version of "Dance Tonight." As a former member of a black college band, I really got into this "teaser." Just wanted to hear more of it. HINT! HINT!
Free Music Review: Gem of a CD from Soul Supergroup Hit: 4 StarsAnticipation was high for the recorded debut of Lucy Pearl, the soul supergroup featuring Raphael Saadiq, Dawn Robinson and Shaeed Muhammad, and this sparkling eponymous disc does not disappoint. The trio recently commented that they used literally everything they put down in the studio on the album, and the symbiosis between the three is truly magic. Track after track floats by, sometimes referencing the Toni's, EnVogue or Tribe, sometimes other artists ("Remember the Times" is a dead ringer for a Tony Rich project), and always hitting that spot. Even the big band reprise of the hit "Dance Tonight" is in the pocket. While the topics range from romance ("Trippin'," "Don't Mess With My Man," "Without You"), meddling family ("Can't Stand Your Mother") and ambition ("Hollywood"), Lucy Pearl does not shy away from bigger issues. Witness "They Can't," a stirring and disturbing 21st century declaration of independence. Throughout, the beats are right on time and the interplay between Saadiq and Robinson flawless. In fact, this album is so smooth and seamless, I began to wonder if these were actually a series of strong hooks rather than whole songs. The material felt a bit slight until I'd lived with this set for awhile and come to love and crave it. My friend Tremell saw Lucy Pearl live in Concord and said they were hotter than the act they opened for. I wish I'd been there.
Free Music Review: The best of the Year! Hit: 5 StarsThis by far is the best I have heard this year, and a Classic! Just one thing..... Needed more slow songs.
Free Music Review: A Great CD! Hit: 5 StarsI think Lucy Pearl's CD is great. I love the song "Dance Tonight". That song is great. I recommend it to anyone who likes R&B/Soul music.
