Free Music Review: Breaks my heart everytime, in the best possible way
Hit: 5 Stars

I was introduced to this band at the Metro, on a cold winter night. I was there to see a friend's band, who happened to be opening for Ludo. Man, was that my lucky night! I heard a few songs from this album, and had to buy it. While the songs are fantastic alone, and the band puts on a great live show, the album as a whole is the real masterpiece.

I've not had the best history with rock-operas. They haven't always been my thing, and I often think they come out sounding forced together, incohesive, or just meh. Having the concept for the Broken Bride explained to me, I knew it would either fail miserably or rock my socks. Thankfully, it did the latter.

The concept is relatively simple - a man loses his wife in a car accident. As a scientist, he begins to work on a time machine, eventually making it work, though it doesn't always send him where he wants to go. The songs tell of his travels through time, trying desperately to reach that morning in May when his bride was killed, so that he can save her. In the process, he battles dinosaurs and even prevents an apocalypse. And yet, it's the ending that is so heart-wrenching it nearly brings me to tears, hopeful and romantic and sad, all at once.

Musically, the record is (in my ears) phenomenal. There is not a single song on this album that isn't good, and Ludo did the right thing by keeping it to only 5 tracks which eloquently sum up the story. Rather than feeling overblown, the 5 tracks allow the story to be told, and told well, and make for a story that can be appreciated in one sitting.

I have yet to play this album for anyone who did not LOVE it immediately, even though some initially laughed at the concept, just as I did. As my boyfriend would say, there is only one word to describe this album - epic. This album is epic, in depth, in breadth, in musicality, in story-telling, and in emotions. It takes you for a ride and doesn't let go til the very end, and you'll just want to start it over again.

While I would highly recommend Ludo and You're Awful, I Love You, and I'm terribly thrilled with their latest offering, nothing will ever top The Broken Bride for me. It's surpassed a number of my "favorite" albums and is the most played selection on my iPod, as it makes for awesome rocking out in the car on road trips. So, if you didn't already get the point - buy it. Buy it now. Support this awesome, friendly, funny indie band, and listen to (and love) this genius album. Now!

Free Music Review: It measures up.

A few days ago, I received some news that was very hard on me, and a few days ago, I bought this album, with no particular desire in my head but to drown out that news. It was rock, it was alternative, so there was a chance that I'd like it, so, along with "You're Awful, I Love You," R.E.M.'s "Out Of Time" a 2-disc album of the best of The Doors, I settled down to wash my sorrows away.

This album is now my favorite of all of them. ("You're Awful, I Love You" runs a close second.)

Yes, you heard me right. I like this indie album better than a selection of the best The Doors have to offer.

Maybe it's because my brain could choose to zone out while R.E.M. and The Doors played while this grabbed my brain and took it on a ride. Maybe because all I did while the songs were playing was look up the lyrics and read along because I couldn't quite understand the zombies. Maybe because even my homework hasn't worked so well to let me escape from that piece of news.

I don't care if you're going through a rough time or not. Set yourself down, listen to the thing all the way through, and be prepared to be blown away.

Free Music Review: One of the best put together albums i've ever experienced
Hit: 5 Stars

This album just blows my mind away. Every person i've had listen to it, has just been mesmerized by the story. It is a masterpiece, no wonder it has such great reviews. I've heard this album easily 50 to 75 times. Its the love and determination you yearn for that is conveyed in absolute perfection throughout this album. I wouldn't change anything about this album. I'm still on backorder even though the album is supposed to be in stock, but the album I purchased from cdbaby came in first (though amazon and cdbaby were shipped at the exact same time...go figure).... The album itself is just.....beyond description. I recommend this album wholeheartedly, and i'm not one to normally purchase albums....rather just listen to them off the radio or on playlist.com....this album hit me so hard that not only do i have this album, and a copy on order, but also the other two they have. I love the "You're Awful, I love you" album, and the original is starting to grow on me. Consider this album a lesson in perfection.....because that's what it truly is.

Free Music Review: Zombies and dinosaurs and broken brides, oh my!
Hit: 5 Stars

I discovered Ludo, as many individuals, through "You're Awful, I Love You," both the album and the song. Digging through information and their past, I discovered this little gem of an album. A punk opera that tells the story of a man whose wife dies and so he travels back in time to try to save her, missteps and...well, eventually meets zombies and dinosaurs.

It tells a circuitous and tragic story in only five songs. A story that is often over-wrought, incredibly crazy sounding on paper but tied together in that intelligent way that Ludo uses in other songs, such as "Lake Pontchartrain." It's a CD where if you are just casually listening, you'll be startled out of whatever you're doing when the lead singer proclaims, "I crashed before the time of Christ / pterodactyls swarming" or "the mission burns / the zombies are marching."

Dark, expressive and ultimately tragic, The Broken Bride is a perfect five piece set without a single weak song. If you enjoy Ludo, I'd definitely recommend giving this CD a chance. It might be shorter than their new CD, but it is better.

Free Music Review: An incredible album
Hit: 5 Stars

While some of Ludo's work may be a bit too "pop" styled for my taste, "Broken Bride" is fantastic. You'd think that a rock opera that includes time travel, zombies, and raptors would only be for the geeks among us, but behind all that is a heart-rending tale of tragic love. The music styles range between intense, soft, dark, energetic, and soulful. I hope that Ludo continues to produce excellent albums like this.
