Free Music Review: one of the best beethoven cycles

generally this set is one of the best beethoven cycles, audio is good considering that this recording was done in the 60's. though the string section of the orchestra was quite dominant, the wind instruments were sonically weak maybe due to placements of microphones during recording( compare with carlos kleiber beethoven symphonies). Last movement of symphony no. 9 seems to be lacking of the high frequecy content of the sound. it seems that there was a cutting of the full audio frequency. maybe they were trying to suppress the noise but the fidelity of the audio was sacreificed. overall this cycle is a must for a beethoven fan.Free Music Review: Beethoven: 9 Symphonies - Berlin Phil - Karajan

I have this series on vinyl from way back in the 70s as part of the 17 volume 85 LP Beethoven Bicentennial Collection released by DG as a subscription purchase thru Time Life. The first 10 lps are the 9 symphonies and Overtures. I recently bought the cds at a very low price thru Amazon Marketplace for less than $17.
There is a nice booklet insert with the Karajan cds. We often miss the substantial booklets and album liner notes that came with LPs when buying cds.
If you are converting your cds to mp3, you might want to make sure your computer recognizes the track files. I had about a 3rd of my tracks as invalid file names not recognized by Microsoft and then had trouble deleting them. I re converted to mp3 and cleaned up the file names. Some may be too long or have diacritical marks such as quotation marks, semi-colins, etc that get recorded and then not recognized later by Microsoft.
These symphonies are classic recordings from one of the top conductors/orchestras in Europoe over the last 50 years and the box set is offered at a reasonable price.

This 1963 recording has been remastered twice. (It's been "reissued" a zillion times but I think it's only been "remastered" 2 times.) The version you should get depends on the amount of money you want to spend and the level of sound fidelity you're looking for.
-- ASIN # B000001GBQ: this item you're looking at DG429036; the least expensive version (also same as import package ASIN # B000056OBA)
-- ASIN # B000001GZ4: 1997 remaster DG453701 (done as part of the special 87-disc 20-volume Beethoven Complete Edition). This version is about $25 more and also has a nice color book with history and photos. Used "Original-ImageBit-Processing" technology.
-- ASIN # B0000C03AH: 2003 remaster to SACD DG474600. This version at a hundred+ bucks is 4 times the cost of the basic set.
(And no doubt in the future there will be another remaster using another whizbang technology like "holographic projection" sound.)
I recommend the 1997 remaster (B000001GZ4). It has the best value combination of price and sound quality.

Love classical music but couldn't carry a tune in a bucket if my life depended on it. Ironically am an audiophile and find the quality of the sound on this CD wanting. My parents had this on Vinyl and I loved listening to it and decided to buy it. The "Living Stereo" recordings from Sony are from an earlier time period yet are infinitely superior. So, for me, the "quality" of the CD has me disappointed. Still 4 stars!
