Free Music Review: Hip Hop Review #3; Why is Music like this?
Hit: 5 Stars

Why is urban music like this, i don't want to be biased on hip hop music and other forms of music which include rap, but what I don't understand is how Lupe Fiasco has yet to sell 500,000 albums yet and it is now December 19, 2008. I would like for someone to tell me is music just a big POPULARITY CONTEST, are people actually looking for who has the most thug exterior and nice body. Music shouldn't be judged on this.
But anyway I am here to give a review and thats what I will do. This album made me compare Lupe to Nas, his flow was immaculate, I couldn't believe how beautifully put together this album was, and had such low selling, even if it was leaked 50 times, i would go out and buy it just to support the artist (I Did buy the album, and did not listen to it once while it was leaked). The first song I heard from him was "Kick, Push", and I couldn't believe how a man was so brave to put together a skateboard song and not be scared of being disowned a little. But the song worked. One of my favorite songs on there is American Terrorist, he talks about how 'some people' are not paying any attention to any of the other races in the world. His literacy couldn't be any more better, and it was a song with an actual message within. This album could go over peoples head if they don't listen to what he's saying and how he's saying it. And remember Lupe is not like everyone out right now, you don't see this man with the crazy "60,000" dollar chain on. I just love this man I can't believe someone like this has came out in the 2000's, I wonder is anyone else out there with the same stature.
Right now I am telling you if you have yet to have this album in your collection or it's the first album that you have bought, I promise you, you will not regret getting this album. Thank You.

Free Music Review: Lupe Fiasco is the truth.
Hit: 5 Stars

I have listened to this album repeatedly via my napster subscription service and love it so much that I purchased it. This one's a keeper. This is deep, conscious hip hop at its finest with good beats. This is hip hop on a higher plane. This is hip hop with substance.

He is real and he's so interesting to listen to. His wordplay is superb and engaging. I love the tone of his voice and I love the beats. I love all the tracks.

1. Intro - starts off with spoken word about the negative things in the inner city then Lupe comes on and tells us what he will be bringing us on this album.

2. Real - He is saying that he is giving us something real that we can feel. He is talking about how hip hop is not about giving anything that's real/substantial and he is saying that this is what he is giving us and he is right.

3.Just might be ok - nice beat and nice chorus.

4.Kick Push - This song made me aware of Lupe Fiasco. I love the beat and the lyrics paint a picture and tell a story of a skateboarder boy and girl. Very cool song.

5. I gotcha - He is doing a little flossing here and it's cool - it's not overbearing like when most rappers do it. He is saying that he is coming to resuce hip hop and I agree that he is doing a good job of that.

6. The Instrumental - This one is about a bunch of things including a boy who is addicted to TV and talks about its effects.

7. He Say She Say - This song is deep and amazing. It's a mother talking to her child's father about the effect of his absence from the child's life on the child. The little boy whose father is absent from his life also gives his point of view about the effect of his father's absence on him. It's such a deep song which I am sure a lot of single female parents and young boys growing up with no father can relate to. Great track. I empathise with the pain of the people described in it.

8.Sunshine - He is talking about going on a date and describing how attractive the girl is, how she reacts to him, how he prepares for it and how they interact. It's cute and sweet. Love it.

9, Daydreamin' - Lupe and Jill Scott performed this on Letterman and the performance was amazing. Jill Scott has the voice of an angel and is perfect for this song. He is doing commentary about all the negative things that are happening in his hood and then in the second verse he talks about music videos and raps this verse: "Now come on everybody let's make coc*ine cool, we need a few more half-n*ked women up in the pool, and hold this m*c 10 it's all covered in jewels, and can you please put your t*tties closer to the twenty-twos and where's the champagne, we need champagne, now look as hard as you can with this bl*nt in your hand and now hold up your chain, slow motion through the flames now cue the smoke machines and the simulated rain but not too loud cause the baby's sleeping, I wonder if it knows what the world is keeping, up both sleeves while he lay there dreaming..." That verse is a masterpiece - simply superb.

10.The Cool - This one is about a gangsta who was murdered and came back to life and observed his old surroundings.

11. Hurt Me Soul - He talks about his relationship with hip hop - how he liked it but he couldn't take the women degradation and the other negatives. The chorus details some situations that hurt people. I can relate to his struggle with this genre called hip hop because it has so many contrasts and contradictions. He is also talking about some of the societal ills in the inner city that hurt people.

12. Pressure - He talks about his album being pirated before it was released and having pressure on him.

13. American Terrorist - This line summarises this song, "the books that take you to heaven and let you meet the Lord there have become misinterpreted, reasons for warfare". He also details how America has created this culture of terrorism by stigmatising groups of people in America and countries and cultures abroad - "give black man crack, glocks to teens, give red man craps, slot machines"

14. The Emperor's Soundtrack - nice beat and nice chorus.

15. Kick Push II - This one tells some stories of a beggar man, a dysfunctional family and a group of friends all people who skated to escape their pain.

16. Outro - it's 12 minutes long but I guess he has a lot of people to thank.

If you want something different; If you are tired of listening to rap about gangbanging, strippers, groupies and material possessions, then buy this album.

Free Music Review: why?!
Hit: 2 Stars

Why Lupe? WHY?!!! No one was anticipating this man's debut more than me. i'd followed him in the mixtape circuit, and fell in love with his unique style and content with underground hits like (my personal fav lupe song) "and he gets the girl" which not only featured lupe's superb wordplay but some incredible production by pharrell....so why am i so disappointed?!!
Well for one thing, Lupe in his own right is truly different from anything out there. yet it seemed like on the album he was TRYING to be different and after awhile it becomes annoying. Now i love what he's attemtpting to do (which in my opinion is to raise the bar in hip hop) he doesn't rely on how many curse words he can drop in one song...brag about how many girls he scores...or rely too heavily on hooks. But in his efforts to seperate himself from the rest, he succeeds in alientaing himself. while there are some phenomenal tracks such as "daydreamin" with jill scott on the vocals..."he say, she say"..."the emperor's soundtrack"...and "real"...most of the album is just...dare i say...corny. i was hoping he would be along the lines of mos def..or common...someone that is different and offers something new, but with this album he was just different. "sunshine" was the typical lovey filler track all rappers seem to think they must toss in complete with extremely annoying hook sung by said rapper."i gotcha" and "american terrorist" both boast awesome beats but the content? not impressive. he has immense potential, he defintely has a lot to say...now only if next time he dropped the quirky swagger and just spoke.

Free Music Review: Genius
Hit: 5 Stars

Alotta people TRY to do positive music, and that's why nobody can feel it, because it sounds forced. Lupe isn't forcing a song like "American Terrorist." You can tell it's in his blood. He really thinks on that level. You can tell when you read his interviews in magazines. This dude is just mentally on a whole different, higher level than 99% of the emcees in the game right now. His lyrics are thorough and most importantly, he knows how to write a good SONG. If you're sick of the B.S. rap in the industry right now, this is definitely THE album to buy. Also check out One Be Lo's album S.O.N.O.G.R.A.M. If we want more good, real, positive music out there, we have to support it when it drops, cuz this industry is all about money. Whatever we buy is what gets the spins. Support ya boy Lupe!!
