Free Music Notes for Lupe Fiasco's Food & LiquorFree Music Review: It's Bananas! Hit: 5 StarsThis cd is so beyond me right now. As soon as I heard, "Kick Push" I loved it. I even pre-ordered it, I had been waiting forever for this cd to come out. And, once I heard I loved it. My favorite tracks are, "I Gotcha," "The Instrumental," "Pressure w/Jay-Z" and my favorite is "American Terrorist. This whole LP has different style and twist to it and I love it. Though I have my favorites, there is not a track that I do not like. Anybody that is wanting to hear so fresh and new hip-hop without all the bling bling, vulgar and nonsense: should check out Lupe Fiasco. I recommend it to any and everybody.
Free Music Review: You Want That Realness, Lupe's Gotcha Hit: 5 StarsJust like most others, I first heard Lupe on "Touch the Sky", a song on Kanye West's second album "Late Registration". However, I quickly dismissed him. Then, one day, when I had it on a music channel, I wasn't paying any attention to what video was playing, but then a song came on that I had to check out. It was "Kick, Push", the first single from Lupe Fiasco's debut album. I absolutely loved it. The first thing that came to my mind was that it wasn't a track about hustling, it wasn't a track about partying, it wasn't a track about women and sex, and it wasn't a track about being a murderer. It was about SKATEBOARDING. Probably one of the most original songs I've heard in a while that actually became a hit. I also liked it even more due to the fact I'm a skater myself. I was so glad that I saw Kick Push being played more and more on MTV and BET. Off this song alone, I decided to purchase the album when it hit stores. I'm so glad I did.
After an intro with an actual point to it, the album kicks off with "Real", a good opener with intelligent lyrics with a sound that will still have you nodding your head. Just listen to these lines, "Lust sometimes can override trust, she said that's why she gave it up. My man said blood spilled out of everything he touched, he crushed everything he crushed, ruined everything he loved, he just wanted to rush, blamed it on the times being rough." That's definitely real talk. "Just Might Be Okay" showcases some of Lupe's storytelling skills, while "Kick Push" describes a young man growing up with a skateboard. "I Gotcha" is another head-nodder. I believe this is the second single off the album. The video kind of goes together with the album cover. The beat by the Neptunes is pretty good. "The Instrumental" is gradually becoming one of my favorite tracks. Lupe's abstract, original storytelling amazes me. The chorus is simple but gets stuck in your head. You can also hear this track on Madden 07. "He Say She Say" is a story told from both a mother and her son's point of view about the affects of a father abandoning his child. Definitely another stand-out.
"Sunshine" is a nice, laid-back love song that doesn't have to mention sex to get it's point across. "Daydreamin" may be another classic song on here. With Jill Scott helping out on the chorus, you can't really go wrong with this track. The beat, it's style, and the lyrics all come together pretty nicely. "The Cool", a track produced by Kanye West, is great. It tells how a hustler digs himself out of his grave and comes back to life. This is yet again another showcase of Lupe's exceptional story-telling. I love tracks that you can listen to and see vividly everything the artist is saying, and this is one of those. In "Hurt Me Soul", he actually states that he never liked Hip-Hop at first because of how women are portrayed. Then he raps about how he came to like it and how he got to where he is now. "Pressure" is a good collaboration with Jay-Z, and in all actuality Lupe has the better verses. The chorus and the beat are both spectacular. "American Terrorist" has Lupe going political, and "Emperor's Soundtrack" shows off some more of Lupe's versitality. "Kick Push II" is darker than the original track, but that doesn't mean not as good. It tells of how two kids choose skateboarding as a way out of broken lives. The Intro is pretty much just shout-outs.
However, I'd have to say that while the bonus tracks are not in any way bad, but they're just not up to par with the other tracks on the album. But still, if you're sleeping on Lupe, then sleep no longer. Go to your local record store, and pick this up. Listen to it in its entirety, and witness the integrity and originality of Lupe. I may be overrating the album but I honestly can't help it. It's something like a "breath of fresh air", which is an overused term in itself, but it fits with Lupe. The production is fresh, the lyrics are fresh, his whole style is just fresh, and Lupe can definitely tell you a story thrown over a beat. He holds it down on his own here too, with President Hova being the only other rapper to drop a verse. If there's one wrong thing with this album, it's that Lupe can work on his mic ability a little bit, but that only may need just a little tweaking. This has to be one of the top ten albums released this year. Definitely something you should spend your money on. It's well worth it.
Free Music Review: Best Rap Album of 2006 Hit: 5 StarsI know. I know. We have heard that cry far too many times this year. However, Outkast's last outing Idlewild actually being a movie soundtrack rather than raps greatest dynamic duo's last album, Mos and Talib not delivering a Black Star album and Ras Kass dropping lackluster mixtapes, we must give credit where credit is due. For over the last year, I have been saying it will either be Lupe or Papoose(what's a Papoose?) as hip-hop's new darling. While Pap is burning up the mixtape circuit alongside the Drama King, Lupe is enchanting us with unparalleled lyricism. From the opening track to the final track, Lupe keeps our attention with various styles and realistic subject matter. Even when he drifts into his daydreams, he births metaphorical jewels and well assembled similes. The album deserves a thorough listening.
My first listening entertained me. I must say the boy knows how to choose the right production to carry his voice. What makes it one of the best composed albums of 2006 is that Lupe doesn't miss a step on every beat. I have not seen pacing like this since the late-great Notorious BIG.
My second listening educated me. Lupe speaks on reality better than 90% of all rappers. He is honest. This album is an earnest effort to put forth his honesty. Listen to "He Say She Say" even the reinterpretation of the same verse from a different perspective drives the point of the song. Lupe exploits the ills of society without being preachy and pious. He comes off like Tupac meets Talib without Tupac's raw emotion and Talib's complexity. He marries both aspects without relying on one of them to carry his skill. Lupe's album is a well-groomed medium of rhyme schematics, lyrics, voice, subject matter and musical compositions.
Don't get me wrong, this album isn't without flaws. I wished he would have kept "Real Recognize Real" on the album. I wished all his figurative verses that personfiy reality would have made the album. The replacement songs are good. But, that initial mindset is somewhat missing. He faced the "I Am" factor (Note: Nas's album "I Am" was leaked, thus forcing him to conjure up tracks to make the album unique after placing his heart and soul in the first version.) and rose to the occasion.
After listening to Lupe manhandle some very tough and enjoyable subjects, you just want more. I hope this young rapper is pursuing the G.O.A.T. title. He has a great shot as long as his muse keeps him inspired.
Free Music Review: Buy this album. Today. Hit: 5 StarsLupe gave me the best first-listen to a hip-hop album since College Dropout. I'll just compare to Kanye here: better rapper, lyrics are more serious, expertly produced and his flow is more playful--keeps you on your toes. Lupe owes a lot to Kanye, though. No offense to the Roots, but this is the best hip-hop of the year so far, hands down.
Free Music Review: I Almost slep on it thank god i didnt. Hit: 5 StarsWhen i first heard the single kick push i wasnt sure if i was feeling lupe. i thought this guys a gimick trying to get in the rap game with this new hip hop skate board image that is going around. i heard the secound single and i was like alright this ones kind of tight. Gotcha is proble one of the lest meaningful songs on the cd. it is produced by Va's own skateboard p. the song is catch lupe has a rediculas flow and it hits hard in the car. so i gave the first kick push another listen and i started thinking to myself what i would have missed out on. about a week before it came out i had to hear the rest of the cd. i needed to now if his flow was that nice. so i downloaded it and it is that nice. when it drope it went strait to the store to pick up the album. it has now been about a lil more then a week and i wont listen to ne thing els.
every track is increadable. every track has deep meaning to it. the intro track after the chick reads her poetry has a tigh beat and if there is anything that i can say i didnt like about this cd is that he didnt rap to this beat. it is also on the outro. but thats were flaws end. Mr. Shawn Cater and jill scott are the olny two reconizable features on this cd. Jay z actualy executive produced the cd. and u no if jay z is willing to put his hand in the project then the boy must be good. the rest of the features are form the record lable lupe is on first and 15th. this is very nas like coming out with a dabute that spotlights himself.
some of the tightest stand out tracks are daydream with jill scott. this track is by far a work of brilance. what i got out of it was he refers to his city chicago as a robot and points out all the things that need fixing in the city. great beat. the cool is another very very powerful and amazing song. it is about a gangster that comesback from the dead relizing the life he lived was the wrong one. the flow and beat is increadible. he says she says is another creative and deep song he tells a story of a kid that has a dead beat dad. he raps pretty much the same verse three times but in three different prospectives. sunshne is a song for the ladies but is not slow and week it is still fire lupe talks about relationships. hurt me soul is a track about how lupe came up in the game and a call for a change in hip hop. pressure is the track with jigga and to tell u the truth jigga did not have the best verse on the track. im tellin u this man can rap. american terrorist is another song with deep meaning and a very catchy hook. this song is about how the government has opressed and attemepted to destroy minorities in this county. the kick push 2 is a song about hustlin with the same consept as kick push 1. the tracks i didnt tal about would be the best tracks on most other cds.
the production on this cd is of the hook. there are two big names neptunes on gotcha and Kanye on the cool. both tracks are fire. most of the rest of the tracks are produced by people from lupes record label. these guys def have a future in the rap game the beats on this cd are so creative.
i would give this cd a 10 if i could. i doubt it will be album of the year because his style isnt realy the kind that will get that much of a mainstream following. his style is like that of nas black star kanye common or dead prez (not as intence). he will be one of the greats there is no doubt in my mind. buy the cd support him it is well worth it. i would pay 50 bucks for a cd like this. im excited to see were this guy career goes. keep doing ur thing lupe.
