Free Music Notes for Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor

Free Music Review: Not for hip hop veterans
Hit: 2 Stars

One who has only been exposed to hip hop via the radio, or mtv will find this album interesting/innovative. As it is distinctly more thoughtful lyricaly, than most mainstream hip hop. Which is why I feel it has so much hype surrounding it, it stands out among that which is in the mainstream. Though the angle that it strives to personify, thoughtful lyricisim progressive/different beats just sound amateaur. Except for "Kick Push" which has a distinctly New York feel, the rest of the album is just plain boring. His flow is boring, sounds like Jay-Z without the speed of flow. Comparisons to NAS and Tribe Called Quest are a big stretch to say the least.

Free Music Review: Stop The Autopsy!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Who said hip-hop was dead? If it is, then Lupe Fiasco is a ghost, or a zombie (or something), because his debut album "Food & Liquor" is definitely alive, kicking, and pushing!! There have been critiques of his work, saying that it's been done before. Blah, blah, blah. Stop hating. And don't say you're not hating. You are. And, you're a liar.

How often do we hear a rapper being an artist, rather than some faux social commentator? He gives us stories, boasts, social awareness, and overall good music, all on one disc. He's not preaching. He's not teaching. He doing what most men his age need to start doing. He's conveying a message of normalcy. He's saying that it's OK to go skateboarding, as opposed to going out thugging. There's nothing wrong with that, is there? Do yourself a favor-- add "Food & Liquor" to your musical library.

Free Music Review: Pressure
Hit: 5 Stars

I know I may be late, but better late then never. I am loving this cd, who would have thought he was under any kind or pressure. Giving my age I am from the era where lyrics are more important then just a hot beat. I love what this young man has to say. The production on this cd is crazy.

Free Music Review: YES! Finally Light in The Tunnel!
Hit: 5 Stars

I've been told about Lupe Fiasco for ages by friends, but it took me quite a while to listen through his album carefully and analyze his lyrics, but I come to the same conclusions as both expert reviewers and fellow amazonians. Lupe is beyond the ordinary and "Food & Liquor" was possibly the best Hip Hop album to be released in 2006. Lupe Fiasco (Wasalu Muhammad Jaco) from Chicago is not the average MC these days since he doesn't pretend to be from the streets, instead he's being socially conscious and deals with what he seen, heard and experienced. He's an intelligent young man that knows how to use his knowledge, he's experienced and street smart without being a thug and like others said, His lyrics are there to be heard cause they make sense. I need to give them credit for the production also, Soundtrakk, Prolyfic deliver about half of the songs while Kanye West, Neptunes, Needlz and Mike Shinoda from Linkin Parc also appears. The production is awesome and even while it uses alot of samples it's never commercial.

After a 3 minute intro comes the first song "Real" which uses a rock samples simular to MJ's "Beat It". It seems like each of the 3 verses deals with one subject each. Lust, Life, Struggle and we get a short glimpse of what kind of issues Lupe like's to deal about. The song itself it catchy as hell!. next up is another smart song called "Just Might Be Ok" with a powerful sound and good hook. Single, "Kick and Push" is perhaps the best intro you get, it's another amazing song about making it in life and finding what you want to do. In Lupe's life it was skating and Hip Hop. Neptunes provide the beats on "I Gotcha", which was also a single. Another cool song with great lyrics. Mike Shinoda's "The Instrumental" is also rock influenced by sound, but perhaps the best song of the album. It deals with people that can't think for themselves that follow clothing trends and let Tv-shows guide their lifes cause they don't knwo what they want by themselves. "He Say, She Say" is another wonderful song and deals with a very common issue alot of people can relate too. Missing a father figure in life. "You see what his problem is?/He don't know where his poppa is/No positive male role model, To play football and build railroad models".

"Sunshine" seems to be a song about love...And that is needed in a genre where love is rarely portraited. "Daydreamin" feautures Jill Scott is wonderful, Lupe verses are haunting and Jill's voice is beautiful as always. The song deals about the real "hood" and not about all the myths in Hip Hop videoes that wants to glamorize it with nekkid women, bling bling and making drug addiction something cool cause that's not reality, just "Daydreaming". Next song "The Cool" produced by Kanye West is a lyrical and intellectual masterpiece. Basically it's about a a gangsta who get's killed and is buried, but he get's a second chance 6 months later to walk out of his grave, but instead of realizing what went wrong he goes back to the same neighbourhood he died in and does the same mistakes all over again. It's like being trapped in a cycle without any choises. "Hurt Me Soul" is another smart song and it's simular to "Daydreamin" where it critisize modern Hip Hop culture that influent youngsters to accept certain words for women (B*tch) and glamorizing certain issues like Drug Dealing which Lupe sais isn't not funny when it happens outside of your house. In the second verse he sais that hustle is wrong "but songs was comin true/And it was all becoming cool" Basically the song is about things that are wrong but get glamorized by media and suddenly become accepted and even right. "Pressure" feauture Jay-Z and is ok. "American Terrorist" is an insight on American Culture and contemporary issues and stereotypes. Good lyrics once again. "Emperor's Soundtrack" and "Kick, Push II" follows before the very long Outro arrives and the album closes at 16 songs.

Overall, Lupe Fiasco has proven that he is beyond the ordinary. A smart man that deals with real issues and rarely raises his voice. A great lyricist with good flow that get a use of his knowledge and broad vocabulary. It doesn't hurt that the production here is fantastic, but like others already said, Listen to the lyrics carefully cause Lupe doesn't drop lines without a reason. His music means something and that's why he get's my respect. "Food & Liquor" was the best Hip Hop album of 2006, it didn't win no grammy but it won respect, which is far more important. Nice job on making a good Hip Hop album in a time when you have to dig deep to find something of a value.

Free Music Review: Just Push Play
Hit: 5 Stars

I've never heard of the guy before he featured on Kanye's "Touch the Sky" (song not the mixtape). I never listened to his style before, but now after "Food and Liquer" I'm addicted. Lupe is fresh and cunning with every song and uses good production to his advantage. Don't expect guns and drugs, this is political and deep. Songs address social issues instead of personal beefs. Lupe had hype for being different and he did not dissapoint. Hip-Hop needs this to counterbalance the heavy abundance of trap, snap, and gansta muzik. even though the aforementioned is good muzik, sometimes I just need variety. Lupe has done more than provide variety though, he's the real deal. I just hope record labels don't pressure him to switch up the style if he suffers from sagging sells.
