I picked up this album the day it came out, I was anxious to here what Lupe had to offer on his debut after hearing his first single. I knew he was different, that's why I was drawn to him. To put it bluntly, this album is one of the realest albums I've heard in quite a while. Lupe Fiasco blows the roof off with his wordplay, and he shines on every track over high quality production. This guy has a very bright future ahead of him, he's got something different and more important to offer. Hearing this album for the first time was amazing because I didn't know what to expect from him, and he totally blew me away. I think he even outshined Jay-Z on their collaboration track, "Pressure". I support good hip hop music and this is good hip hop music. Lupe is one of the more gifted lyricist in the game right now and the beats are a great background. The only downside is the subject matter can be a little depressing and I think Lupe has it in him to be even better lyrically (his verse on Kanye's Touch the sky is one of the best from that year IMO). Food & Liquor is an ode to Hip Hop. Very emotional, spiritual, and most of all, REAL! Lupe Fiasco is an extremely talented Hip Hop recording artist and I thank him for giving Hip Hop Food & Liquor. This album is in no way selfish as he shares the perals of growing up, speaks of political and social issues, and gives us back the value of true Hip Hop. Recording artists such as myself and Hip Hop heads alike idolize him and regard him as a warrior in the war of winning our culture back from the reigns of snap music, trap music and chopped and screwed. Lupe Fiasco is as good as advertised.
He's more laid back than Chitown homie Kanye West but with a much smoother delivery and equally witty, intelligent rhymes.
"Food & Liquor" is well-deserving of its Grammy nomination.
I copped a friend's bootlegged copy first just to be on the safe side and was pleasantly surprised given most of the hyped up cats that drop these days are just that (hype).
If you're into artist like Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Nas, Common, TuPac, Scarface, the Roots, and (some) Kanye West, this album is as sound lyrically and entertaining as they come.
"Kick, Push", is Fiasco's hit single which helped brand him a "skateboard rapper" but really there's so much more to dude.
Tracks like "Hurts Me Soul" and "Daydreaming" are classic Lupe you've gotta hear to know what I mean.
Again, this isn't your run-of-the-mill, radio Top 40, rap music that gets repetitive and somewhat dumbed down.
Lupe is a dope lyricist whose vibe follows the tradition of hip hop icons like A Tribe Called Quest.
Recommended for the hip hop music fan with discriminating taste.

Lupe Fiasco will never be a platinum artist, he should be. This album is just what we need to hear, but don't want to hear. It is filled with unobtrusive, non-offensive lyrics and very few of the multitude will ever respect it or honor it. The music followes the concepts and it is hard to not be receptive. Because it is not gimmickly and is straight to the point is why most won't like it. There is no reason unless someone just likes to hear crooning why this CD should not be on the lips of the media.
