Not as refined, organized or well produced as Brian Williams' later work, the influential "Heresy" is still a great album with a lot of authenticity of atmosphere. It's not as loop driven as "The Place Where the Black Stars" hang, and is really much more focused around reverberant drones that sound like air moving through massive cave systems.
Heresy was in fact recorded underground, and in every way it shows: the muddiness pervading the album shows how difficult it must have been to capture the sounds of these locations, but despite this muddiness the feeling of trespassing into an unsympathetic, inhuman, hostile world is palpable. People have compared this album to a trip through hell. The place that it brings the listener is beyond the silly descriptions of "hell" so often present in the media. Its darkness is much more real. It is not always overt, many times manifesting itself as a simple lack of compassion, a lack of any kind of warmth. If this is hell, it is a cold, infinitely lonely hell. The mangled animal noises scattered across the album do little to shake this feeling.
The album truly narrates a journey, with the only distinct shift in mood coming after the utterly wicked, ominous climax of the 16 minute epic "Part III", becoming more melancholy and otherworldly with the mourning flute playing of (standout track) "Part IV". Other standouts include the wind tunnel mania and vertigo of "Part II" as well as the labyrinthine "Part V".
In summary, the technical flaws in "Heresy" are easily made up for by the unbelievably thick atmosphere and the fact that nearly all of these pieces remain among Lustmord's most memorable work. It is a classic of the genre and I encourage anyone interested in dark ambient to buy it.

From the deepest vault at Soleilmoon, a much loved but long unavailable classic has been remastered, repackaged and re-issued. "Heresy", the album that launched and defined the dark ambient genre when it was first released in 1990, has been hailed by critics and fans as one of the most important works of its time. "Heresy" was recorded in various subterranean locations and manipulated in the studio with Andrew Lagowski (Legion, SETI, Lagowski, etc) providing engineering and additional programming. It was the first Lustmord album to feature extensive sampling and computer assisted sound design. Recent improvements in sound technology permitted Lustmord to re-master and significantly improve on the original recordings for this new version, which comes in a digipak and even bears a new catalog number. Brian Williams, the man behind Lustmord, currently works as a sound designer in Hollywood. His most recognizable musical contributions to soundtracks can be heard on "The Crow" and "Underworld", but he has contributed his talents to numerous films and computer games. His resume includes musical collaborations with The Melvins, Tool, Chris & Cosey, Coil, Paul Haslinger (Tangerine Dream), SPK, Robert Rich, Current 93 and Nurse with Wound. He has done remixes for Jarboe (Swans), Venetian Snares and Mortiis. From 1985 until 1999 he ran Side Effects Records, the label launched by SPK, releasing more than 30 albums. As Lustmord he has released 10 albums and singles, as well as additional works as Arecibo, Terror Against Terror and Isolrubin BK, all of which were conceived as means to explore different musical directions.
